Been watching the subs on Hulu for the past couple of weeks. I like the show. Now that all the fucking ridiculously intros for the main cast are through I'm hoping it will pick up some more. Is there a kind of "greatest hits" viewing order? So many episodes...

Also Usopp is the worst so far. I want to love his character but his constant coward shit is tiring to listen to.

Hyouka 16 (Rewatch)

With this rewatch, I've gained an appreciation for the mystery of this arc that I didn't have before. It's probably, and unsurprisingly, the best Hyouka mystery, both from a "traditional" view, in terms of scope, and in how it integrates into characterization and brings forth issues related to the motive that give it a decent amount of thematic density and insight into the author's (and director's) stance on some of the more overarching topics discussed in the show.
But even taking that into account, the construction of the mystery and the presentation of clues throughout four episodes is flawless. This is how a proper mystery should work on TV- making use of the episodic format, while exploiting the amount of information that film can convey in little time to integrate it into other aspects of a show.

Now that I know the solution, seeing how deliberately the hints are dropped makes me almost feel dumb for not figuring it out when the show was airing. That's the feeling a well-constructed riddle should give. I can basically pinpoint what Oreki is deducing exactly in each of the scenes focusing on him, just based on the clues that have been given relevance.
It's true that this episode and the previous start delving heavily into the mystery over focusing on festival-related activities, but there is still plenty of fun, now even with Oreki's sister in on it!

Conversely, the cut into the issues of each character is becoming gradually deeper. The stuff with Mayaka and the manga club escalated quite quickly, but I appreciate the fact that they didn't go all over the top and had it be an accident, even if the girl was being an asshole either way. In reality, it doesn't really matter to Mayaka whether or not she meant to splash all the water over her, but it shows the viewer that they're not over-the-line irredeemable monsters over at the club. It's realistic, just like most of Hyouka.
After that, Chitanda comes in and turns into her saviour with the manga and the info about the poster. Info that later gets relayed to Oreki and plays a key role in the solution of the Juumoji case.

I particularly liked how Satoshi acted in this episode. From subtle touches like his reaction at the beginning of the episode when he's told Juumoji skipped "ku", to the way he confronted Oreki at the end. You could almost feel his impotency, lol. There was also a nice little touch with the color, a staple of the show:

That's how Satoshi sees Oreki at this point in time.

I have to say that, aside from little nice parts, this episode was the least interesting in terms of animation from the festival arc. So many newbie ADs in this arc- Nao Naito with 12 and 17, Nobuaki Maruki with 13 and (not that much of a newbie but still) Miku Kadowaki with 15. It was quite explosive, I assume they put their all into each of their episodes, especially the debuting sakkans. I've already said that I don't fancy Hiroyuki Takahashi's style too much, but even then it still makes for a very above average episode- just not at the level of Hyouka's best.

Usagi really sucks at this Sailor Moon gig. That's two out of two times when Tuxedo Mask has had to save her and then give her moral support. He literally just showed up here in order to tell her "believe in yourself".
You get it. Usagi may have the tools now but she's still a young teenager fighting legitimately scary monsters, without some magical OH I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT TO DO NOW. Meanwhile, the guy who is supposedly saving her doesn't actually do much.

Don't listen to the haters, though. Usagi is great.

[Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon] 003

If there's anything I've learned from watching magical girl shows, it is that toying with a maiden's heart is the absolute worst thing you can ever do.
Speaking of teenagers, a running theme is that anything they might be into is evil.

Some of the flower imagery is very reminiscent of Utena, by the way. The cut with the show's title could have been taken straight out of Anthy's Rose Garden.
Ikuhara didn't wait until Utena to start putting flowers onscreen. He did it in Goldfish Warning to some extent, and he does it in Sailor Moon whenever he gets the chance.

Oh, and the movie he directed? They're in nearly every scene.

SSY 24-

This was ridiculously anticlimatic and pretty much breaks the arc for me. They're actually playing this straight it seems which is an utter disappointment.

she has none.
Usagi is a childish, idealistic teenager interested in teenage things like love but without much world experience. She's impulsive yet easily distracted, and she is a bit of a lazybum when it comes to doing silly stuff like schoolwork or saving the world.

That's a personality.

The thing about Usopp is that he starts out as the worst but eventually becomes the best. Oda gives way more attention to his character development over the course of the series than to the other Strawhats and if you make it several hundred episodes in you'll look back and be really impressed at the evolution that takes place.

As far as there being a "greatest hits" watch list, simply search for a filler list and avoid those (although some people will tell you that the G8 arc is really good.) I personally don't advise skipping any episodes from canon material.

Usagi is an idiot and mostly useless.
I hear she gets better eventually.
In the first season she is simply terrible.
I liked her better in the manga. The anime moments where she mans the the fuck up so she can stick up for her friends tend to be pretty jarring. The Manga was a bit more natural at this. I'd suggest watching the movies, she ends up being a bit more likeable in them, although it's a still annoying how quickly she switches from whiner to martyr.

One thing I'm continuously impressed by in Zeta Gundam is the animation quality. It's really surprising how well some of these battles are animated.
I LOVE how beautiful Zeta looked while watching it. Seeing how horrible ZZ looked after it was a big let down. CCA more than made up for it, though.

Thanks for the reply!

I definitely want to watch as much as possible but with so many episodes there's bound to be tons of filler.

So the Rei thing was unveiled. Can't say I was too surprised by it, but the reveal was good none-the-less. Everyone is all into Gendo... Why? Screw off Ritsuko. What an absolutely worthless person.

If you've already watched 54 then that means your already are watching filler, your on the apis filler arc, it ends half way through ep 61 with later half of ep being canon.

I also wouldn't advise skipping canon cause, oda forgets nothing even the most smallest details is carried over or brought up again, don't worry about catching up take your time.

Yeah, it's an enormous time investment but cutting the filler episodes makes it a little easier. One Piece was my most intensive marathon ever and even watching ten episodes a day and cutting filler it still took me almost six weeks to watch the 400 or so episodes that had aired at that point.

I actually just skipped to 61 lol.

Fairy Tail: Priestess of the Phoenix

First of all, I got to say visually, this goes way beyond what the TV series does. Night and day would be an understatement. More like night and.... year. The shitty CG fire is completely absent and replaced with actually well animated flames. Same with the ugly magic circles outside of one or two very minor attacks. Not only that, but the environments look and feel a whole lot better. Magnolia actually seems alive and the Fairy Tail guild itself looks great.

That being said, the movie as a whole was definitely something. Overall, the first half was kind of eh. A lot of talking and boring build up that could have been paced better. Fortunately, there were some bright spots, including a solid introduction to the cast and their abilities for non-fans, an entertaining montage in a creative magical city, and a few neat fights.

What's cool about this movie is the climax starts a little more than halfway in, with the tension only letting up a few times in short bursts. Every main character and a few side characters gets their own well-animated, well-choreographed fight. Again, it blows the tv show out of the water in every way. This all culminates in a pretty intense finale that is frankly quite stellar.

Music is just as fantastic as the tv show with one or two new excellent tracks.

Story is whatever. It's not really that important.

Would I recommend this to people that know nothing about/hate Fairy Tail? I don't know. I mean I thought One Piece movie 6 was pretty inaccessible for non-fans, but look at the popularity of that in this thread. It's definitely a solid movie, but it does have some stuff that's par for the course for the series which may turn some people off.

I have not seen You are Umasou, but I kind of want to now. This was definitely a good movie with a great second half and a fantastic finale. I'd say it's a solid 8/10.

You have my interest, if only as a window into what could have been.

e: I still intend to watch past Phantom Lord someday, I'm not giving up on that.

Well done,
Shinji. I'm sort of surprised I've never been spoiled about Kaworu being an angel (and also Rei? Not sure about that one yet). I'm kind of feeling bad for Asuka right now =(. I hope she makes a triumphant return. Last two episodes...

When (if?) you get farther, you'll see her role shift. She may never fully lose the childishness but she most certainly begins to take more responsibility in her role. The Usagi at the end of S or SuperS is so far removed from early Sailor Moon Usagi.

fuck's sake the battle in this episode was ten solid minutes of Uraganos grunting and shouting while Shiny Luminous keeps running away. What the hell was this episode even supposed to be about? It's only been like two minutes since it ended and I've already blacked the whole thing out.

I want Akane as my waifu. She might get me
killed
, but I'd
go out with style!
I'm really liking this Akane full of confidence. Before I liked her design and the prospect of her becoming a good asset for the squad, but that really didn't seem to ever materialize, until now at least. Now she keeps delivering what I wanted from her and that makes her pretty awesome for me.
I'm sad for
that death, I really liked the man.

For all Saki fans, it seems that the next anime season covering the national tournament won't be until next spring.

Considering where the manga is at, that's for the best. With the chapters for it sometimes being 7/8 pages long I'm surprised a new season would come so fast.

I sincerely hope so.
Almost an incentive to get further into the show.

I haven't seen an episode of this for a while but I figured what the hell and what better way to start this up again than with an Ikuhara one! The weirdest moment in this episode had to be the the cheering for Boxy as if he was at an actual boxing match being juxtaposed by all the graves in the background. It's actually kinda messed up when you really start to think about it. Hell, the whole thing would've been disturbing if it wasn't for the hilarious gratuitous English!

Poor Naru, hopefully she can
find another love soon and start to move on from Nephrite. ;_; (i swear if its gonna end up being umino then i'm gonna lose it. lol)

It's unfortunate that the last stretch of the show - you know, the conclusion - is so inconsistent, especially after that mostly amazing run we had through the middle set of episodes. Ep24 is particularly marred by an insistence on explaining things after they happen, in some attempt to build--what, surprise, suspense? Repeatedly, you'll see an event happen without context, and then a flashback to build that context. As a result things happen without a flow, and it doesn't help that the setting
is basically one tunnel they go through, then another tunnel, then a tunnel with a curve that leads into the same tunnel. You never get a good sense of setting since everything looks the same.
Not quite what I envisioned after watching ep20. WTB Optimism again.

"Hey, I think I got the solution!"
"What is it?"
"We may be able to do this!"
"But how? Explain yourself"
"WE CAN DO IT"

Christ, that last bit of dialogue was frustrating.

Ishihama please deliver on the finale, I won't ask for more at this point.
