OK, I know I'm kicking the Hyouka discussion beehive here
I know many people here dislike lengthy discussion of the show, so let's keep it short. I'm actually thankful to you since I think you're the first that responded to one of these with something interesting :D

Some things you mention (like the horizon line being off) I hadn't noticed, and I see what you mean. There's no standing ground for the characters, that's true. I'm not particularly averse to the lens-flare and don't find it offensive like you do, even if it's not something actively contributing to the composition and I can agree that it would be better if it wasn't there.
But the part about how the eye goes made me raise an eyebrow, since I registered the image in the complete opposite way: from Chitanda's feet to the helicopter, bottom-right to top-left. I don't really have any theoretical knowledge of film, I just like to talk about stuff I notice, so I don't know if maybe images like these are "supposed" to make the eye go from left to right, but it didn't strike me as such. The bulk of the blocking is on the right, while the left constitutes mostly void space, so it made sense to me that the image was meant to draw attention to the right side first, sky second. That's what I commented in the post when talking about the layout and it's mostly what I liked about it, so if most viewers perceive it the other way around the good points of it kind of disappear.

GTO 22

Funny episode with Onizuka getting cursed and his curse ultimately having been caused by Tomoko. Not what I came here to talk about right now, though.

GOD GUNDAM 22

I don't know where to begin. GOD GUNDAM. Also, Super Mode II making Domon go Super Saiyan. And then heroic sacrifices and MIND BENDING REVEALS. Master Asia almost losing his title of Undefeated of the East. Ass kicking and name taking left and right. A LIGHTSABER CUTTING THROUGH A LIGHT RIBBON. The deadliest usage of ribbons you ever did see. Hydra heads everywhere. Sexy Russian spies. German Ninjas. Space Pirates.

I've dreamt of Gundam episodes like this, but never did I hope to see one.

God Gundam is Best Gundam and I defy you to find a better one. This show is so hilariously out of Gundam AGE's league that it's a sin to say they're in the same series. I can't even think of an apt comparison for a great earlier installment in a series and the most hilarious trainwreck of an entry ever. It's like Zero Mission and Other M, FFVI and FFXIII. Day, sweet, glorious day, and wretched, horrible, terror-filled night.

What an episode!

It's also all still largely redundant as long as someone else is paying attention to the same sources (which they usually are), but whatever.

Anyway, what the hell is the 紫いも flavor? Taro?

Had some taro mochi the other day. so good.
I first got used to eating it in terra chips. Taro root is pretty delicious stuff.

Anime fans engage in weird forms of elitism.

Whoa, where did this come from? Gonna give it a try too.

Besides that, I suppose I'll watch the mecha stuff, the mermaid show, the Yokoyama show and the rotoscope show. Aiura is piquing my interest due to the director, but I'm not sure.

Yeah, the director is what caught my eye for Aiura as well. I figure it won't be a big investment or anything, since it seems to be one of those short episode shows.

Otona Joshi no Anime Time - Jinsei Best 10

Wow duckroll hype + firehawk hype pays off! The duckroll hype curse is broken! This episode was amazing (barring the small Bones moment that marred an otherwise great production).

Given that Yoshida's last Otona special was about the bad side about being in your 40s and falling out of love, I wasn't sure if this would be a wrist-slitting depression-fest but man, I was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be a punchy little romcom.

Sure, there's a little bit of Hatoko being a bit man-crazy, but how it ends is simply amazing - and could only work with older characters - and you can't help but laugh at where she ends up. There's just so much energy and life running through the episode that, especially compared to the first episode, I wished this was turned into a series or a movie. If Hataraki Man can feel soul-crushing, then Jinsei Best 10 is purely life-affirming.

But really, the ending is what elevates it from your good, but standard, romcom... and in fact, if this WAS a movie, they probably couldn't have gotten away with that ending because... well, if you watch this episode, you'll understand why. But that's precisely what makes this so good.

Maybe it's just the high of coming out of watching the episode, but I think this is one of my favourite Yoshida works yet and might rival K-On!! in terms of how fun it is. In fact, if they wanted to make a K-On!! sequel where all the girls are in their late 30s, this is the template that they should follow.

I almost feel bad for the third episode... because I feel like it can't possibly be as good as this one.

In Yoshida I trust! (Clearly, SSO should end with a romcom episode lol)

The K-ON name and the novelty of seeing the 'mature' years of the original characters might actually work.

I guess this is where someone brings up takotsuboya.

I misspoke when I said the eye was supposed to start off on one side and go to the other, I just meant that the eye travels back and forth along that line, not that it flows in one direction, and that the relative size of the wheel gives it more weight in the composition. The lens flare goes beyond being a mere annoyance for me when it sits in the middle of the composition and muddles everything up.

Kakifly the creator of K-ON did continue where they were in university unfortunately that didn't turn out well. Only Kyokami can salvage it.

Naoko Yamada has said she's not interested in K-On past high school. I guess that could change but that was her last statement regarding any K-On continuation.

Sure, if they want it to sell less than Fractale, they should take firehawk12's advice. :lol

If they can take Sex and the City and spin it off into The Carrie Diaries, there's no reason they can't go in the other direction!

Or you go Bunheads style and have one of the girls (Yui, probably) take on the Sawako role at another school but have half the show be about her life outside of the music room.

Although I'm probably giving Japanese nerds way too much credit. lol

It's not like the manga was ever all that great though. lol

She's smart to know anything beyond highschool, otakus consider the K-on girls as old hags.
If K-On! is a nerd show with some minute mainstream appeal, based on zeroshiki's experience at the theatre, they could actually reach that same audience years from now if they did that.

But then again, most franchises also don't have that kind of longevity. lol

It has some mainstream appeal but its not One Piece.

I guess if they somehow made K-On long running they could slowly build up an audience and then pull your idea off. As it stands though, I see no way how it could work.

Well, imagine if they made a K-On! anniversary movie/series in 10-15 years. It'd be a nice little surprise assuming that younger fans haven't completely grow out of watching cartoons by that time.

I think the best thing you can hope for is K-ON: Sisterhood in two more years.
Followed by K-ON: Revelations?

In 10-15 years they'd still be in high school!

They're gonna milk that month between the cultural festival and graduation for all it's worth.

[Hataraki Man] 11
This episode actually doesn't lift off from the ending of number 10 --instead it takes place around the same storyline that began in there, and while it follows on Hiro's suckiest day ever it brings a new focus to her struggle, centered on her
worries about her job and why exactly she gives so much of herself to the point that she takes no real care of her love life.
Of course the answer to her quandary is a surprise to nobody (
more work!
). Nonetheless, the introspective yet somewhat more optimistic tone of the episode when compared to the last one makes for an interesting dynamic. If this show has been good at anything it is too not take a side on some of the issues it presents, and the continuity between 10 and 11 make it all the more evident.

[Hataraki Man] Fin

Not sure what to think, being honest. There's nothing that I find bad about it, and the simple fact that it is presenting a different kind of drama to what we are used to in anime is refreshing enough. However, it does get very discomforting at times, which I guess makes for an accurate depiction of the average Japanese work environment. Hataraki Man's non-commitment to make a stand on the issues presented was not something I liked, but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate it.

I guess the show's strongest point was its characters. For such a short work it really does come across like every character is given enough time to shine in front of the audience, giving an even broader spectrum from which to look at the natural Japanese work life. It's not often you find such short television with a depiction of real life as believable as in here.

So I'm tired and want to go to bed so fuck this. I'm giving Hataraki Man four gratuitous buttcracks out of five. Smell ya later, punks.
Still no cast news yet, but the debut single for HKT48 came out today and one of the tracks (Kataomoi no Karaage) is the ED theme for the Japanese My Little Pony!

Need to see the visuals before making a full judgment. Also, HKT48? Are they AKB48 for little kids or something?

Hataraki Man 11 END

hataraki11.jpg

An incredibly sad and yet somewhat perversely optimistic ending to a pretty brutal and frank series. I say "perversely" as it makes it pretty clear the consequences of an unhealthy obsession with work and the wedge it slowly drives between otherwise happy couples until whatever happiness was left is destroyed and yet at the same time ends up with those very same people finding salvation in their work. Normally I'd be kinda miffed at the hypocrisy on display but this series has made it perfectly clear that's just the way it is and it's honestly better off for it. Instead of taking an obvious stand, this series merely lets the events speak for themselves in such an incredibly earnest manner that it does a far better job of driving home just how fucked up and insane everything is than it otherwise would've if it had been more overt in its critique. Definitely a series worth checking out as there's almost nothing else like it.

Given that it's based off of a manga series, I would've definitely start reading it if not for the fact that it A) is not fully translated and B) has currently been on Hiatus for the past couple of years. I'm sure her husband Hideaki Anno's got something to do with the later, that bastard!!!
