I realized Jinrui employed non-linear storytelling at episode 7 or 8, where they cut her hair because of reasons. Its pretty bad execution but thanks to the weirdness and charming factor from Watashi, the show managed to deliver.

Naturally some shows are both very good and very cute with the moe aesthetic so the notion that moe has no creativity is bunk.

Moe does seem to be a rather broad-ranging term, but I think I subscribe to your definition as well.

The lightest moment in the episode was the Tenchu Girls bracelet scene, but otherwise, the heavy atmosphere was present. In a more cohesive way than Brynhildr, but there's always the question of what's more interesting. Something off the wall and unpredictable with jarring tone shifts is more fun to talk about, but something cohesive has a better sense of identity. So Enju wasn't always the peppy girl she is today, and mask guy is already trying to pull the "join me and we can rule the galaxy" plot. Usually that'd be saved for at least the midpoint. Still overall enjoyable.

Ah right, the standard "my crush might be working a shady job, but it turns out to be something normal" misunderstanding. This is the sort of a nice episode that can help progress the relationship between Ayukawa and Kyosuke, but then the ending happened and wouldn't surprise me if Ayukawa forgets about what happened.

Well, that's one way to stop this potential love triangle and I'm surprised I never considered this potential plot twist given that this is anime. I'm not sure how I feel about how they handled Seiko's feelings toward Otani in the latter half of the episode. Could have done something more serious with it, but this is a lighthearted comedy after all.

Hey a more than decent follow-up that actually brought up my interest in the series. Looks like they will attempt to keep the grimdark/serious tone, which is what I heard. Sure the plotline of 'lolis save the world' is still a bit too anime, but at least now it looks like a cheesy anime instead of a cheesy anime that came from a LN.

I mean I was wary at first, but now I'm genuinely looking forward to more episodes. That's definitely an achievement in tself. It might be one of the better shows this season (for me) if it keeps this up. And tones down the happy loli humor.

Majin Bone 3

Against all odds, this remains pretty entertaining. The CG portions are always going to be shit and it's riddled with QUALITY at times, but the colorful cast and awesome flat shading make the non-combat portions of the show a treat to watch. It's still pretty shounen so I don't think it's a show that most people will enjoy, but it scratches some vague itch for me.

To be fair, at least Sentai is using the JP cover art for their discs. Though it is a shame that they switched their own cover art to the anime visual instead of keeping it as another of the JP covers.

AnoHana The Movie

I never watched the whole TV series, so I thought I should at least watch this, thinking back to the Mari Okada debate from yesterday.

I can't imagine watching this without having seen at least some of the TV series beforehand. While I hadn't seen most of the recap footage (I finished off just after (care if you've not seen the whole show)

when I was watching the series) but I think I'd probably have found it all a bit confusing with no familiarity at all with the show. I assume the point is to go to the cinema and cry at all the bits you cried at before?

It's funny how a couple of years can change your perspective. Three years ago, Poppo was my favourite character; now I find him incredbily irritating, like his voice actor is overcompensating for being the "comedy" character. Menma remains as irritating as ever, though; the cutesy wutesy speech is just too much for me.

IMO, in a debate that was had at length when the show was airing, the storyline would definitely have been vastly improved if (whole show spoilers)

While elements remain mawkish and emotionally manipulative, and the emotional climax teeters precariously on the border between moving and laughable (I did laugh at a couple of bits -

Menma's "conversation" with Yukiatsu in the dress, and everyone screaming "MENMA!!!!!" as they ran off to play hide and seek

), at its core I actually think there's a fairly unoriginal but well constructed story about the effect that death can have on a group of friends.

With Menma as a purely metaphorical presence, rather than being both metaphor and literal, flitting in and around their lives and overshadowing everything - I think that could have been rather more moving. Instead you're left with the uneasy tension as to whether or not she's real and the resolution being unsatisfactory either way.

I think that's why the "new bits" of the film that the recaps are slotted into work generally quite well for me. With everyone just getting on with life and acting more like human beings and less like histrionic tear factories, the framing story plays out quite nicely.

On a technical level, I do wish I liked Tatsuyuki Nagai's choice of shows more than I actually do. This and AnoNatsu have such beautiful settings (and AnoHana has some really well directed scenes), and I hear such good things about the A Certain... series he's worked on, but the audience most of his shows target just isn't me

I think it probably would have changed the entire tone of the series if

, inasmuch as it would be much harder to make it so that the entire cast would have

gotten together and had some kind of catharsis. Perhaps what happened to Yukiatsu is a sign of that, inasmuch as they realize he's crazy and obsessed with her, but they don't really know what to do with that information.

I do agree that it's ultimately hokey either way, but as a movie anyway, it worked well for what it was.

Rowdy Sumo Wrestler Matsutaro - Episode 2

I wish I was Matsutaro, and some guy had me setup for 7 potential jobs. I can barely find one >_>

Enough about my problems, I'm starting to warm up to Matsutaro. They turned his aggressiveness down a bit, and he's more tolerable now. I was wondering what would get him into sumo wrestling, and it seems that punch (or push in this case) may be it. I'll keep watching for now.
