Winter-Spring 2014 Anime |OT3| People incapable of guilt usually do have a good time

I'm sorry, I had simply assumed words only have the power you give them, so didn't realize I should be censoring myself. I will from now on.

I simply thought it would be a good word to use, because that's what people all hope for in a romcom (for the hero to get laid), but his story is like how a leprechaun or genie would grant the wish, using the other meaning of the word.

Your username makes this whole thing more entertaining than it should be.

Patlabor: The First Movie

Straight up excellence.

The distant future: the year 1999. Tokyo is in the midst of an economic boom, spurred on by the efficiency of a new breed of manned walking robot known as the Labor. With the help of the increased efficiency of a new Labor OS, Tokyo Bay is in the midst of a grand construction project to reclaim thousands of hectares of land from the ocean. At the same time, the 2nd Unit of the Tokyo Police 2nd Special Vehicles Section is dealing with a sudden surge of out-of-control labors causing destruction. Could there be a connection? Is some greater plan at work? If so, can SV2 stop it in time?

ibSWUJGjNsIMp.jpg

Oshii isn't shy to use stillness when it's appropriate, as he does here when Gotoh breaks some dark news. The film holds on this exact frame for a lot longer than you'd think.

Mamoru Oshii directed this 1989 movie, and his fingerprints are all over it. It's really good.

iLQUcQeGMvuBM.jpg

I didn't see any basset hounds in this movie, but there was this cat.

The first thing I'd point to are the characters. I don't have any experience with the OVAs, and now I kind of wish I did. Not because I didn't understand what was going on (well, there's one character introduced near the end who I could have used a little history about), but because I'd like to spend more time with this crew. They're a diverse and likable bunch. The movie doesn't waste much time on exposition, but we get plenty of moments that define their characters early on, from the moment we first see Asuma and Noa on the helicopter over the Ark. They all may have their flaws, but they're also committed to doing the right thing whatever it takes.

iboYP3qzzQcfa8.jpg
iG1wRGUSzPg8F.jpg

Fisheye lenses create a kind of claustrophobia, filling the frame with whatever's in the middle. In the former shot, it's to create horror, while for the latter shot, it's a comic effect emphasizing the intensity of the argument.

But what gives this procedural a little more heft is Oshii's classic direction. The distant framing, fisheye lenses, and cityscape montages are in full effect here, and they give the march of progress that the setting might otherwise take for granted some meaning without which the main plot would just seem like mustache-twirling chaos for its own sake. Oshii's Tokyo has its gleaming, polished surfaces and futuristic machinery, but it's also filled with the run-down remnants of an earlier time: old houses with broken windows, buildings with no people, litter-filled canals and empty cans. Cities are as much the unmarked graves of society's past as they are monuments to man's progress.

il7guqfQUsoQS.jpg
ibcEVcVyMqApJF.jpg

There are all kinds of wonderfully-composed shots I could have used here to show off some of these montages.

There's a lot I could talk about, plenty of scenes that would reward a close critical eye. I'm actually looking forward to diving into these storyboard books and making-of materials. But I don't really have time right now. It's just a great movie with great direction and great characters. And while parts of the climax got a little dark and muddled, the final robot showdown was really interesting. I don't have much mecha experience, but it felt like a very different kind of underdog fight from anything I'd seen before.

ipi6bY1bmpu03.jpg

What's on this pizza? I see pepperoni, olives, peppers, mushrooms, shrimp, and a smattering of ikura and seaweed in the middle. I think the round stuff might be squid, but I'm not quite sure what the grilled thing is. Is that chicken or a kind of fish?

Everyone else joining in on this is going to be really happy.

Both of these posts are horribly wrong for entirely different reasons.
But I'm never wrong.

All anyone cares about is the titles.

It's the staff lists that make them funny, though there are exceptions.

Space Brothers 89:
After a long journey, we finally arrived at a long awaited moment.
It's not really a huge surprise that Mutta was selected to go to the moon, but it was still revealed in a pretty nice way, and I like that he was able to prove how deserving he was with his out of the box thinking during the previous arc.
I think it's pretty important that this is happening for Mutta just as in the previous episode he had a step forward in his status as being a good brother to Hibito.

I feel bad that Nitta and Kenji can't go to the moon just yet, but I hope that they can roll with the punches and make it into space before too long. It seems like they'll have something new going on judging by their final scenes in the episode.

Can work be over already? I wanna go home and finish Battle Tendency. WHAHUAAMMUUUUUUUU is still the best villain this season.

Please come back, Dio.

I was thinking about finishing Blood Lad after Battle Tendency, but I'd better go with D-Frag, no way another battle thing can do me any good after Joseph's manly crossdressing.

Raining a lot and it's a bit cold, so I guess it'll be a slow day at work again, time to read KissxSis. leewwwdddddd

It's really cold, friday can't come soon enough. Gonna read more Maison Ikkoku at work.

The Holy Mecca of DTL

So yeah, this series ended at the very beginning. It was nice to see the origins of Mediator (or Sweets, we never learn her given name), and the final episode got quite creepy.

I came into this series expecting something disturbing and melancholic, but what I got was a beautiful, charming, witty, insane and sometimes disturbing show. Very creative, and now I want to get the bluray. It may not be for everyone, but give it a couple of episodes to see if it's for you. It's definitely one of my favorites, though.

The World is Still Beautiful 2

A bit confused by this episode. Nike stated she needs to experience the beauty of the world in order to help her be able to cast rain. And she also needs time to prepare this sacred ritual. But then
how was she able to cast rain at the end of the episode to take out the fire? All what she did was look at some flower fields and the stars, is that all what you need? And where exactly was the preparation and the adjustments she had to make to adjust the song and melody and rhythm? She seemed to cast rain on the spot singing a generic jpop song. Or was that all BS she was telling the prince to stall for time?

I realized Jinrui employed non-linear storytelling at episode 7 or 8, where they cut her hair because of reasons. Its pretty bad execution but thanks to the weirdness and charming factor from Watashi, the show managed to deliver.

He should really teach her some basic education skills. It's a little annoying to see the female protagonist being barely at a first grade level. And some "serious" death scene to make it clear death is going to happen and almost happen a lot.
