Wipeout - Sega Dreamcast Version

To Dreamcast, the cause and solution of all our gaming problems

Looks like a PS1 game but smoother and with texture filtering etc. I.e. not that impressive IMO, the DC can do a lot better.

Its all the more impressive when you know this isn't done with the official SDK and it was ported in a matter of weeks to a level of finesse you don't even see on current games anymore:
  • The VMU has its own little Wipeout icon, for instance
  • Enhanced controls
  • Enhanced visuals
This is as close to an official port one can get, which is extremely impressive.

I played PS1 Wipeout on my Mister Pi not long ago, and it's still a solid game even in its original form. Seeing it in 640x480 at 60fps is amazing.

Man... Sony should really make a new Wipeout. I gladly sacrifice Ghost of Yotei and the Wolverine game and Intergalactic for one.

They tried a few times but they always try to make it " more " than original and that messes up the feel of the originals. They were just perfect out of the gate.

Amazing.

I'm hopeful that the back-compat release of F-Zero GX with the Switch 2 might spark new interest in futuristic racers.

A man can dream

Looks like a nice port. Always wondered if Dreamcast could have done Wipeout Fusion, or any or the PSP titles like Pure or Pulse.

Everyone loves Sega and everyone REALLY loves racing games...and everyone loves new Dreamcast games even more! (or at least I do) so what happens when a modder comes along and takes the the Wipeout source code and ports the game to Dreamcast....this!

Meh, unlike the GTA ports this one isn't that impressive, the Saturn had a Wipeout port so duh, yeah the Dreamcast could run it.

Crazy to think that the very first Playstation 1 game that I ever played was Wipeout, all the way back in 1995. It blew my mind back then. I still have my Dreamcast boxed up. But I don't really have a TV that I can use it with... or a VGA box. I guess I could just emulate this.

Just to add more, one of the very first -- if not, the first SNES game I have ever played back in 1991 was F-Zero. F-Zero was pretty impressive in its' own right, given that it was running at 60fps, and the flat Mode 7 playing field did give the game a 3D feeling.

But going from F-Zero to Wipeout in the span of four years, the leap in technology felt really impressive, despite Wipeout only running at 30fps. But even fully polygonal 3D environments at 30fps still felt smooth in comparison to something like Daytona USA on the Saturn. Which was locked down to 20fps. Wipeout was later ported to the Saturn a year later. But for a launch window 1995 PSX game, it really made the hardware feel impressive for that point in time.

Also, video related, was the original CG pitch video that Psygnosis produced to sell Sony on the concept of Wipeout. I think this video was produced in 1994 or early 1995. It showed a very different concept of the game being more rally like. The final concept turned into a futuristic circuit racer. This footage was sold to Universal Pictures and it was used in the 1995 movie Hackers.

Also, I saw this posted on the website 'Time Extension", these are some early 1995 Japanese PS1 ads used to sell Wipeout and Destruction Derby:

I tried this out with some friends on real hardware and we couldn't complete the first circuit. Couldn't qualify after the third race!

It runs well and looks clean, but it's a very difficult game.

NOTE: Music was eaten again

and now with an upgrade enhancing the graphics and presentation for Dreamcast!

The Dreamcast community is really something else. Between this and the GTA ports, they really love their console.
The hardware being relatively easy to code on is also a plus. And there's always that feeling it got cut short: if Sega had more money, it could've definitely lasted at least throughout 2001, since the release list that year was pretty solid.

Anyone remember Bleemcast?

Back in Dreamcast's heyday, you could use Bleemcast to run PlayStation games on your Dreamcast.

It was fucking black magic.
This was before PS2 came out, so Dreamcast was running the exclusive games of its direct competitor, sometimes better than on native PlayStation hardware. You could play Gran Turismo 2 on your DC at double the resolution of the PS1. That was an insane time in console gaming history.

I have the Bleemcast bootdiscs for Tekken 3 and Metal Gear Solid. They were openly sold until Sony's lawyers shut it down hard.
