Wired Article - Sony Stumbles

I'm in the 'drop the price before launch to get people excited' camp as well. It's just unbelieveable that they think people won't get over the $600 price. Well over half a grand. Say that to yourselves. Well over half a grand. It's gonna be the deal breaker for many people. Unless we are witnessing the fall of a giant, I'll be optimistic that Sony is playing us on the price. It think with 200 and 400 dollar alternatives, in the public's eye, we will attach to the $600 price point. It's the most extravagant and though provoking. I think, at this point and closer to launch, the thoughts will be mostly negative.

I hope it drops, of course, so I can buy one. At this point in my life, and I can't even believe I'm saying this, but if it's >$300, no sale. I can't do it.

This is not the fall of a giant? The GAF sony consensus was so strong on the PS3 price as being 'reasonable at all cost' that anyone who dared to suggest PS3 might actually be expensive as Ken had be promising and hinting for months would have been immediately banned or labelled an Ntard, Xbot or some other name.

The fact that people are still in denial about this is staggering. There won't be a last minute price drop. Sony may alter their bundles abit to increase perceived value. Deal with the price. Face reality.

Something else to consider about the absurd $600 pricetag

$600 + Sony's support history? You really want to have your $600 machine turn into a toaster and then talk to some bored indian guy about getting a warranty repair? Yeeeeah.

How many votes?

Usually in the thousands (which is statistically significant) however +D Games is a gamespecific part of a major media-site, so some skewness is there (respondents are mostly gamers)

Don't expect them to up and drop the price any time soon. If the ~$900 build cost and estimation of ~$350 after 3 years is any indication. Sony won't drop it for a long time, they need to recoup as much money as possible and lowering the price quickly when it costs so much to manufacture is more suicide than charging $600 for the damn thing.

Nintendo selling on "Cool"? Nobody liked Nintendo during the last two generations. Nobody will like them in the next one.
Everybody liked Nintendo during the NES and SNES generations, then things changed. Things can change again.

Was this survey taken by Microsoft or something? No way MS should have gotten 15% of the votes in Japan.

I agree....that seems too much for MS.

About Nintendo, I don't think they'll take away from the pitful amount that MS will get in Japan, but I think they could seriously put the hurt on Sony.

Btw I don't see Sony dropping the price dramatically, for fear of pissing off the other companies producing Blu-ray players.

If this price really starts killing people's interest in Sony, is there anything they can do to remedy the situation at htis point? Aside from drop the price lower and lose more money? It seems they tried to one up both competitors in every department and the cost of pursuing two different strategies has gone out of control.

I suppose they could easily switch to a pay method for their online subscription, maybe recoup some costs there if they drop the price further. They could also axe the hard drive all together, since 360 had an SKU without it, but this is one of those areas they wanted to trump the competition. Tilt controls could go, but I doubt that is costing anything at all. And of course the graphics could take a hit, but that would likely involve redesigning the chips, which is out of the question at this point.

I'm not saying PS3 is destined to fail right now, but I'm wondering, are the stuck with a price this high?

It's just that Sony's conference was so bad. If that poll says anything, it's that it's universally accepted as nothing close to even close to being special. :p

And we all know how Japan feels about Xbox at this point.

Sooooooooo Nintendo is their only choice really.

I can't blame them for not voting for Sony. I wouldn't. This probably doesn't change their opinion much of them otherwise but holy crap, their E3 conference was pretty bad I must admit.

I wonder what would've happened if Sony announced this price before 360 was out.. I'm confident MS would've launched at a higher cost than they did.

But you don't make moves like that, or try to set a trend for higher costs WHEN THE COMPETITION IS ALREADY OUT FOR CHEAPER :lol

You know, when I think about the people out there spending $500+ on high-end graphics cards and thousands on 'killer rig' gaming PC's, the price of the PS3 suddenly seems a lot more reasonable.

I live in Europe, and well I´m not willing to spend more than 300 euros.Otherwise I don´t care about blu-ray,HDMI and stuff like that. But,it´s me.Six years ago,Sony launched PS2 here. The price was 299 UK pounds(520 $) and it didn´t stop Sony from destroying the competition and it didn´t stop Sony from selling more than 30 millions units across the continent.

At the end of the day,it´s all about games. Will Sony get the games?

Right now,Microsoft is the only company in trouble. It´s a matter of fact. They have wasted 6 months, even if they sold 500000 last month(USA).If you remember what the original XBOX did,you will know that this thing had sold 1.9 millions when April was done, far behind what PS2 did.And it´s more painful when you get Japan´s charts...So it´s time to chill out, wait and see what happens.

Of course we are, consoles are probably the biggest bargain of any electronics ever. $600 for a console that would otherwise costs thousands to make an equivelant of (if possible) with a PC. That's not fogetting the touted Blu Ray. $600 for these machines is dirt cheap when you see some of the other crap on the market that costs as much - and you'd better believe MS would've wanted to be on the $600 train aswell

Don't roll your eyes at me. In an absolute sense, $599 is a steep price, sure. But considering how much money some people will drop on a computer that they'll end up using almost exclusively to play games on, a dedicated console that's capable of comparable performance at a fraction of the price doesn't seem like such an awful deal. Seems like Sony's trying to position the PS3 as the Alienware of consoles.

Difference is console gamers a sane!

Me I bought a kick ass system last year, and it's going to last me years before I buy again. Besides I use my PC not just for games, but Media encoding, all the office duties, HD video, etc. The price difference is warranted due to all the other things you can do with it.
