Witcher 3 downgrade arguments in here and nowhere else

even before you consider context (open world etc) that's, like, crazy talk. no 'almost' about it, it doesn't look anywhere near as good in terms of fidelity or lighting and texture quality. If we could scrutinize the models in these shots I'm sure those too would show stark improvements.

Ok guess I was kinda overreacting there lol

I can't wait to get some mods for this game. Should make a huge difference.

Come on Cor... Faith. This is still miles away from the E3 gameplay reveal. The indoor fight scene someone posted earlier had GI with at least 10 or more light bounces. I can't really tell if it's still the same GI but it's definitely toned down to a minimum.

Again:

Google this article: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Artist Talks About Weather, Lighting, Consoles, Graphics and Much More

"G: While many focus a lot on pixel and polygon count, lighting is possibly the most important element in making a game look great. Could you give us some details about the lighting solutions and tech used in The Witcher 3? How much of it is dynamic, and how much is baked?

JT: Lighting is absolutely crucial! And making an open-world game with always changing lighting conditions was a huge challenge. Every light in the game is dynamic, even some effects cast lights too, you can walk up to almost every light source and extinguish or ignite its flame, nothing is baked!

We ended up not using Global Illumination, light bouncing and reflecting… this is similar to what I mentioned previously with visual effects, an area where things keep getting better every year, but these really cool solutions are still far too expensive to use in a complex game. So to add more detail to the lighting, the whole world is covered in “lighting and reflection” probes, that analyse the surrounding area and light it accordingly. It does a pretty good job."

It would be an overkill to even use a static GI for such types of games, let alone a dynamic one.

Wow.. yeah thats pretty bad.

Why the fuck do they even do this? Shit man -_-. This bums me out. Gotta bail outta thread unless I get soured on the game before I even play it lol.

But that could be actual game footage. It probably got changed later but it isn't wrong to state it is from the game when something is, right?

Weber was asked if via the RedKit or editing the game’s XML and INI files it’ll be possible to influence the weather system, for instance making it rain more often.
Yep, you can actually change a whole lot in that regard. : )

Yassss.

Edit:

Sharpening only looks good on screenshots and short videos. If you stare at the game like that for a long time, the eyes really start to hurt.

Interesting.

Played through the tutorial portion of the game on max,

really underwhelmed on the graphics department.

Grass lighting looks a bit off, water looks bad.

idk, I expected much more. Must have been the hype again.

Looks a lot more like Dragon Age inquisition.

YIKES

At least I bought a physical edition so if the game doesnt turn me on, I will sell it quickly.

I wish the game looked like this :

witcher-3a.jpg

I mean, this Witcher 2 shot almost looks better than that Witcher 3 shot posted above by another user.

I know people are going to chew you out for the claim about that second screenshot, but I agree it definitely looks more aesthetically pleasing than this flat, blah looking scene even if it's not technically as complex

So disappointed, I bought a 970 specifically for this game after watching the original trailers. I'll buy it when it goes down in price and modders work their magic.

PC gaming in a nutshell... Nothing blew me away on my PC the last 3 or 4 years.

I upgraded a year ago for PCars.. Game doesnt look that good now but at least I can play most games at 1080p 144fps.

What exactly are you expecting? Your 970 is already going to be acceptable but not maxing out the game. Mods that increase graphics etc. even more is just going to make your card perform even worse.

Did some color correction trying to match that old gif footage more.

Throw a sharpening filter on it and you will really nail the 2013 look. People keep forgetting how distorting that thing is of images

The chart that nvidia posted says my 970 can play ultra @60fps/1080p without hairworks no? I wouldn't mind dropping down to 30fps with mods if they can make it look like the original footage.

There are definitely moments when this game looks great but the more I play it I realize the color palette and flat foliage really takes away from the overall quality and immersion. Really curious to see what sort of sweet fx/reshade profiles come out for this.

Everyone loving their playable hairworks? :P

The grass takes a bit of getting used to, it's not the absolute worst, but yeah pretty much as expected, maybe a tad rougher in the performance department.

I sacrificed shadows, textures, and terrain (all set to high, though I'm sill experimenting) for hairworks. Get around 40-50 FPS, which is fine for me.

The 970 got the most love out of the deal, when it comes to optimization.

No, the nvidia chart is for 40+ in demanding scenes and not 60.

Almost bought this game off Steam today, but looking at the comparison shots definitely puts me off on trusting CDPR on their graphics claims. Should be a good rule of thumb for me to only purchase AAA-type games I want to play during holiday sales. I'll stick with that.

The lower setting has a higher variety of foliage types, but a lower density.

What the hell?
That's showing what happens when you push it well past the limit in the config file. For in-game settings you don't lose foliage variation with higher density.

I just started it up, and you "downgrade" guys are nuts. This looks amazing!

Edit: it was just the opening movie. Game looks like N64 with no Expansion Pak.

I don't think anyone's denying that it's a good looking game, but it doesn't look as good the advertising material they were using to promote it. I think that's the issue here.
People keep saying that, but we can't stop having people taking the piss, posting Witcher 2 screenshots and shots from PS3 games just to show the world how bad Witcher 3 is supposed to look.

As someone who just finished Witcher 2 this weekend on maxed settings, 1440p, no way in hell does that game look better than 3.

While it may not reach those initial videos, the game still looks damn fine in motion. Stills don't do it justice.

I was in the forest at night and legit got quite spooked. The atmosphere is great.

Just saw the in game cinematic that I believe is the basis for the forward lit particles scene, the one with the burning village and the wild hunt guy. Yeah those particles, flames, and smoke were massively downgraded. Smoke effects were very minimal as well as particles. There could obviously be another village later on where you're in control but from what I saw the effects on display weren't half the complexity of what was in the trailer. Bummer.

So has viveks or eatchildren commented in any of the threads yet with possible ini tweaks, suggestions?

Edit: ^speak of the devil

This looks better than the greent tint in the original image imo (not even speaking about the oversharpening):

Dat low poly barrels btw. I wonder if they got an upgrade?

"Sharpening only looks good on screenshots and short videos."

No it doesn't. It doesn't look good anywhere.
What's up with CDPR and their obsession with sharpening? I've never seen another game with an option for sharpening in game, and there's a very good reason for that.

I agree, but quite a few people seem to be mistaking it for actual detail, especially on textures.
Of course there is also stuff that really was removed or changed, but most assets seem to be identical.

Are these with ini tweaks or just Ultra Settings?

TONS of INI tweaks. Spent almost 5 hours figuring out what works and what doesn't. I decided to step down to 1440p so that I could crank everything to the absolute max. I get 70+ fps throughout and looks mind-blowing uncompressed in motion. Like, there are times of day and weather combinations when I can honestly say the game takes my breath away. Even the order 1886 didn't manage to do it to this extent.

Can you PM me your ini-file when you think you are finished or it runs fine for you? I would love to take that one as a starting point to start my tweaking. (9 hours left till i get home.....)

You did it! You posted the first screen I've seen where the pine bush doesn't look like a victim of the Photoshop smearand blur tools.

Game looks quite good.

Damn, that's a pretty serious downgrade. The biggest victim is the foliage, it's just so poor looking compared to other modern engines.

The lighting overall has taken a large hit as well but it's serviceable, a little better than playing Skyrim.

I wouldn't go THAT far, The Order is still the most breathtaking current gen game out there, I'd say. However, in the open world field, I don't think any 8th gen game tops this game. Perhaps because I can enjoy it with all of the bells and whistles, I can call that. But, ya know!
