Witcher 3 gameplay from YouTubers from CDPR event

Looking forward to this game. Will be my first Witcher game. Just a question, will you be able to soley rely on magic in combat to take down foes or will the sword always be the primary offensive weapon?

Sword will always be a Witcher's primary weapon. Signs are useful but serve only to augment your swordplay. He is not a Mage.

It is mainly a sword fighting game. Think of the magic as side abilities.

One thing bugs me regarding drowner.

According to the lore, human drown and become drowner. Where the hell they learn to swim then after they become one? I mean, their superior human form can't yet the lesser, monstrous form can.

There's an old saying: whatever hangs, shall not drown. Unfortunately, sometimes the bodies of hanged criminals are thrown into the lake. This legend is a real slavic mythology and the conception of drowner comes from vodnik or vodyanoi (with small differences in that vodniks have gills) It's close relatives are mermaids.

In the slovenian tales, vodniks would store the souls of the drowned in porcelain cups with lids, when the lid is removed, the soul within will escape in form of bubbles. In some slovakian versions, some souls take a form of a fish, because fish cannot be liberated. They want to return to the earth instead.

I think he's talking about for consoles, so it's not obvious, since we really haven't seen any PS4 realtime direct footage of this game. However, for the PC it looks spectacular!

Black Flag was a cross-gen game, so I have no doubt that TW3 will blow it out of the water on consoles.

Alright, shame i always love being a mage in these types of games. Still looking forward to the game like crazy.

I really don't want to get hyped by this thread so i won't be disappointed by the game and how it would look on my console... but those screenshots *___*

Torn between GOG and Steam. Steam has a bit cheaper and seems to have slightly different bonuses including an artbook (though maybe all of the art is on GOG as well, hard to tell). May try buying a key for $30 for GOG from someone that got it with their video card, perhaps. I can't wait for this to come out!

Assuming that is from cutscene into which game was transitioned from gameplay then Wild Hunt is still looking great :)

They arent just regular people who got too close to the water. Rather than bury criminals, people tend to drown them or toss their already dead body into it.

LOL, I guess they have spent enough time in the water to learn.

Haha, I guess I am not doing this enough.

Basically, I got tired of all the nitpicks in these Witcher thread so I try to make silly complaints for parody purposes.

But yeah, I knew that they mostly are criminals that are tossed into the water and also normal men who got too close to water and got dragged into their death by drowners themselves.

I didn't know about that souls thing though, interesting. So thanks there raphier.

Hmmm, I wonder if "artworks" is the same as the "A digital version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt artbook" that Steam advertises. Thanks for the information.

Nah. Just a few concept art. I got mine on GOG. Nothing special in that list. The flac music is good, but it's not even the full soundtrack.

The video was made with a single 980. Though gypsy magic can always come in handy...

According to Gopher his FPS dropped to what felt like 25 FPS with Hairworks on. Are all videos confirmed to run on a single 980? If so then that's very interesting.

Gopher just said in his Q&A that the hairworks wasn't actually that taxing (other youtbers had it on) and the only reason he had such issues was he pushed it by attaching the Gryphon trophy to the horse (both have a lot of hair)

That build was pre-optimization. And they had shadowplay enabled, which seemed to affect it quite a bit. But yes, all recent footage is from a single 980.

Ah, I see. I really wish there was a way to enable Hairworks for Geralt only. If Far Cry 4 is anything to go by the performance hit can be pretty managable as long as there's not that much hair on the screen, but I can imagine that performance wil drop to unacceptable levels as soon as any animal appears on screen.

Oh well, at least the low poly hair model looks really good too.

Hi what's the main difference between hairworks and tressfx?

One is made by nvidia and is proprietery, while the other is made by AMD and can be used on all GPU cards.

edit - hairworks will be used in W3 for the first time. On the other side of the fence, TressFX v1 was used on Tomb Raider PC, much more optimized v2 was used on TR:DE on consoles, and v3 will be used in upcoming games.

Hairworks actually works on Geralt and other character hair too ?

I totally missed that tbh..I think it still looked unimpressive.

IMO The only areas were Hairworks has a marked effect is in stuff like Horsetail, monster/clothing fur.

Hi what's the main difference between hairworks and tressfx?

As mentioned above, they are made by different companies with Hairworks being exclusively directed at Nvidia cards. As far as the effect, I believe they have the same purpose of giving more separated hair strands with more realistic motions.

Hairworks isn't proprietary. Going by Far Cry 4 the difference between AMD/Nvidia for Hairworks is at most a handful of FPS. Or at least that was the results when I compared FPS with a friend who had an AMD GPU.

As for the actual difference, it really depends on how the developer implements it. They are both trying to achieve a similar goal (More strands, better movement, less clipping, more realistic in general etc), but ultimately it comes down to how a developer uses the technology and so comparisons are fairly difficult, at least at this stage with only a handful of games that have used either.

How does the riposte/parry work in the witcher games, exactly? I've played a bit of TW2, but never was able to do it even though I had unlocked it.

Yeah I really like to know that one. I played the game on hard/dark but riposte ... Never got it. I think there is a tutorial on it, I just completed it with luck
