Witcher 3 gameplay from YouTubers from CDPR event

Yeah, your edited text is the thing: It's all about the perceived, objective size, as all game worlds are about the illusion of the space and it's a complicated mix of things like FOV, movement speed and the scale of trees and buildings. It's not just about the numbers. But anyways, if you have a map ~equal to GTA V and no means to travel it but by walking or on horseback, it will feel HUGE.

And the things you listed are only a small part of what makes a world feel big or small.

Which ultimately means that map comparisons are absolutely useless. 100%. I just don't understand why people keep doing them.

About the framerate in the video with Hairworks

Day one patches are hardly rare sadly enough. And even the Witcher games has needed to have some patches to improve performance and ease other issues. The original for example use to have a loading issue that could be bad for some. That was eventually done away with a patch.

Mostly on console, I don't remember many games having extensive patches that fixed bugs recently on PC. I just remember the Dying Light one that reduced draw distance by half.

Thank god, I have a 1440p monitor, this is insanely good news for me.

There's been lots of talk about the size of the Witcher world map and It's been constantly compared to Skyrim, GTA V and other popular open world games. There's also been at least one comparison picture with GTA V that has a ridiculously wrong scale.

The Witcher's map is split into three separate open world locations and to make things even more complicate, each location maps are in different scale, so comparing them as a whole is quite difficult.

By comparing different buildings, landmarks and travel distances in several videos, I've resized the three area maps to be approximately in same scale and composed them to a single world map with uniform scale. I've then used this composed map to compare it to GTA V's map. As you can see, the Witchers world isn't as big as some may thing. It'll still feel huge, as you don't have fast sports cars, helicopters and airplanes to travel around it.

Oh please. Your comparison makes whole of Novigrad smaller than the runway in GTA 5.

Which is about right when exploring on foot and on horseback. If you watch the 35 min gameplay on Gamersyde, it takes about 40-60 seconds for the player to cross about 1/3 of the total height of the city whilst walking slowly on horseback...

Considering everyone who's played some of Witcher 3 says Novigrad is probably the biggest city they've ever encountered in a game... yeah that comparison can't be right.

Sorry, but how dense can people be? Just look at the 30min gameplay video where Geralt arrives at the city of Novigrad and rides up to the river and turns right. It's not that long distance and it's about halfway through the city from south to north.

Is it me or is there no CA in any of these gameplay shots? I remembering seeing it in a few older shots. They either removed it, or give us the option to remove it in the options. If it's the latter then I hope that applies to consoles too. CA has absolutely no place in a game like this imo.

Nobody has said that. They HAVE said it is one of the largest cities in an open world RPG, which really isn't hard. Still, the city is a fraction the size of Los Santos from GTA V or Paris from AC Unity. If you expect it to be bigger then prepare to be disappointed.

I would say about 1/3 the way across from north to South if you include the Temple Isle part at the top of the city, but yes. The city is not THAT large by any means. If you were driving across it in a car from GTA for example, it would take about 15 seconds to cross the entire city :)

You can turn it off/on in the options

No it's still there. Look at that screenshot with the Hairworks wolves for example. There is an ability to turn it off on PC, I hope there is one on consoles as well for your sake as no one should be playing with that mess of an effect on :)

More than 300 buildings in Novigrad is pretty fucking huge for an RPG.. no one said it's big as AC cities or GTA cities, but it's still really big

Man, I really hope so too. I fucking despise the effect in 99% of games it's used in.

Yeah, you are right. It's amazing how delusional some people are. So many here seems to have completely unrealistic expectations about the Witcher's map size. It's large, sure, but no where close to being so absurdly huge that Novigrad would be the size of Lost Santos or similar. There's gonna be a lot of disappointed gamers when the game is released. Not because the map is small, mind, but because of the completely overblown expectations.

I think only one youtuber said that... and who knows if he only has played games like Fallout, Skryim or Mass Effect.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Retail PC Version FAQ : http://forums.cdprojektred.com/threads/35369-The-Witcher-3-Wild-Hunt-Retail-PC-Version-FAQ

A lot of you have been asking about the GOG.com code being in the boxed version of the game. The answer is YES! Please check below for more details regarding this fact.

Q: Do I need Internet access to install the retail PC version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt?
A: The initial, pre-premiere retail PC batch of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt needs to download a file from our servers to allow play. This file will either be downloaded automatically during installation process or you can choose to download it manually from a dedicated website. Since we have no DRM in the game, this is a security measure we needed to incorporate so the game doesn’t leak during the production process. No worries, the file will not be big. Copies of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt produced after launch will not contain this security feature.

Q: Will there be any sort of serial number provided in the retail PC box?
A: The game does not require any serial code to install or play. However, each retail PC copy of Wild Hunt will contain an additional GOG.com game code for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. See below for details.

Q: What is the GOG.com game code found in the box used for?
The game code grants you access to a digital backup copy of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on GOG.com. You will also receive full software support, i.e. future updates, as well as all the additional content like the 16 Free DLCs, the FLAC & MP3 soundtrack, comics, wallpapers, art book, all voice over packs and more.

Q: Can I install and play the game without the GOG.com game code?
A: Yes you can install and play the game without the game code.

Q: Will I be able to install updates and the free DLCs without using the GOG.com game code?
We decided to offer software support, DLCs, and extra goodies only to gamers who confirm their purchase with the provided game code on GOG.com. This is the only way for us to differentiate between you, honest gamers who bought our game, and pirates who snatched it from the Internet.

Q: Do I need to become a GOG.com user to play the game I just bought?
A: You can install and play the game without becoming a GOG.com user.

I think all of this is quite reasonable, especially pre-release protection put in place. I wonder how soon some people take this to claim that CDPR/GOG is using DRM when they said they wouldn't.

The sense of size and space are actually going to be quite similar given their respective modes of transportation. The only disappointed gamers are going to be those who played all of GTA on foot. Basically nobody. So let's not blow up the significance of this comparison beyond a technical curiosity.

And you are on the other extreme with your pic comparison...

In terms of scale, I know some people think the game is really huge but just take a look at the angryjoe footage : it doesn't take long to reach his waypoin even though it seemed far at first glance on the map.

As long as the content is there it should be a pretty awesome experience.

My 'source' is comments made in this thread, hence the word 'apparently'. I don't think it was posted on their official forums which is why I'm not sure if it's true.

I believe initially the devs said "in the coming days" which led people to think it would be out last week. Then later they specifically said "next week".

Well I played it and seen the entire map which they showcased it on the entire wall. I still don't know what u mean by 3 separate sections of the map and being linear. It is just one map. And you are missing a lot of the southern land mass as well as south east where vizma is. South of vizma is where white orchard is located. East portion of the map where that canal leads to are some mountainous area with a huge waterfall. Not to mention also north east and the mountain region up north.

The world is split into three open world parts you need to fast travel between. (Skellige Islands, Novigrad/no mans land and White Orchard) This is a known fact.

You must have misunderstood something, as Vizima for example is not part of the open world map, but a separate location you can only access via quick travel. Here's the official map of the game for reference: (Novigrad/No mans land is the large map, Skellige islands is the second large open world location you need to fast travel to get there. White Orchard is the lower right small map that is also a separate location you need to fast travel to get to)

I haven't been keeping up with the whole map stuff too much, but isn't Novigrad a city? And I recall watching a video where the developers rode on a horse right into Novigrad without any loading screens. Has that changed?

Yeah, as far as I know they said that they would show both console footage "in the coming days", but they didn't.
Although they will show PS4 footage this week, no mentioning of XONE footage.
Ah, that explains it. Thanks.

I hope they show both this week.
