"wizard and glass'' almost made me cry

i started the fourth installment in the dark tower series before the school year ended, but never had a chance to touch it all summer long. disappointing, but i was working an awful lot and spare time i did have was spent writing, with friends and just preparing for the next long week of work.

however, with school in full swing and all of the dark tower books now released, i've decided it's time to finish off king's magnum opus. even though i went into "wizard and class" with low expectations and was fairly bored throughout the first half, as soon as things start going wrong with roland's ka-tet, i couldn't put it down.

i became so wrapped up in the ka-tet's ever-growing danger and roland's relationship with susan that i was on the verge of tears when
susan was being burned alive during reaping
. if i wasn't in class and having my reading interrupted by note-taking, i probably would have been streaming tears.

i'm waiting for a copy of wolves of calla to show up early this week, though i may dig into another book before continuing on the path of the beam. i don't want the series to end, so i'm attempting to lengthen it as long as possible.

I think I did cry, if I'm remembering correctly. I don't like the book's ending, but apart from that it's my favourite of the series.

In fact, I liked the flashback so much I kind of didn't want to go back to the other characters, I just wanted to hear stories from that time.

GAF alone alerted me to this series, I bought the four books as a box set the other day, finished the gunslinger last night. Starting on the drawing of the three. I'm really liking how frikin weird it is.

wizard and glass is my favorite as well, i havent yet got my copy of DT7 though. but i suspect wizard and glass will still be my favorite anyway, it just totally blew me away. and i felt the same way, i wanted to read more adventures of roland, alain and cuthbert.

It's one of my favorites in the series, though it's sort of a love/hate relationship because of the flashback, and comments/references that have been dropped relating to that before and after this book in the series. I almost gave up DT at one point... because of this book, and yet this book is a large part of what drew me back.

I cried like a baby as well. Then again, I have so far a few times in the series, one recently in DT7 (almost finished!).

The series rocks (pending the ultimate ending), and yes it gets MUCH weirder.

Funny--Wizard and Glass was my least favorite of the four DT books I've read--the tone just didn't fit with the rest of them. Now that I'm getting ready to go through all seven books in one go, however, I'm hoping that it'll occupy some sort of symmetrical turning point in the series.

Yea it is a real weepy one, but I didn't cry, was on the edge of my seat, very intense. It is my favorite. I still have to get through 6 though, damn you schoolwork, and book reports, and such.

Yeah, W&G is great.

My ranking:
The Dark Tower - 10
Wizard & Glass - 10
The Drawing of the Three - 9
Wolves of the Calla - 8
The Wastelands - 8
The Gunslinger - 7
Song of Sussanah - 6

IAWTP! It took me a while to get into it, but that Flashback took up the greater part of Wizard and Glass. It's a strange turn, but I really enjoyed it. It was just incredible storytelling.

I'm still working on Calla. It's quite long.

I've yet to read book 7, so please don't spoil it anyone, but I really enjoyed Song of Susannah, while Wolves of the Calla was kind of...well it was far too long for the story it told. Certainly my least favourite, though it had it's good points.

What didn't you like about SoS?

I've never read a book that has made me cry. I've read a few that've made me laugh though... but i can't imagine ever crying from reading a book. There's a few movies that've made me tear (lacerate ;)) up though

I agree that there were some emotional moments in Wizard and Glass, but overall, I didn't like it as much as the first three -- like Prospero, I feel that it didn't quite fit in, and would've been better served in an abbreviated form as an aside flashback in another book.

I still haven't gotten to number 5 yet, nevermind the others. :(

The entire Susannah/Mia part of the story was awful IMO. The rest of the book was good though.

BTW, "Fit in the first three"? The Gunslinger has a completely different mood from the rest of the series and The Drawing of the Three and Wastelands are quite different as well. I don't think there's a very consistent mood throughout the entire series.

I agree that it doesn't "quite fit", but I still loved the book. Basically, the Dark Tower series is the recanting of the journey's of the Ka-Tet along their mission.

The Gunslinger is different, yes, but it's somewhat of a very extended prologue. Setting the stage and background information for the rest of the series. Wizard and Glass, doesn't really fit into the timeline.. it's ok to drop in extra information as you go of course, but I'm pretty sure at least 2/3rds of the pages of that book are the telling of Rolands tales from his youth. That's just way too long. As someone mentioned before, at that point you almost felt as if you were split between two long stories. I wanted to know more about Roland and the lads adventures..
