STB is paying the price for Into Darkness. The bad trailer didn't help either.
Oh right, I completely forgot about trailers. Which is stupid of me, since I make the exact same case for Ghostbusters like, on page 2 on this BO thread or the previous one. :')
I am dumbass.
When is ghostbusters coming out?
ooooooooh, daaaamn.
Those GB drops are brutal. Definitely not legging out like most of Feig's other films.
I've bothered to get Spy (2015) to check out whether GB is just a bad run or a systemic thing. GB is definitely a bad run, BUT its problems are also already apparent in Spy as well, including a full-on dick joke by 40 minutes or so. However, it makes up for it by an actual written script with written gags (the vermin in the office), and the 'ladies only' cast in the office making sense due to the inherent sexism of the spy-movies that the movie spoofs, most obviously with Jude Law as a James Bond type. That sneeze at the start was an excellent joke in that regard, with the 'convoluted plot exposition' directly preceding it. That's premise, setup, expectation into surprising result: a joke.
But what keeps it in check with the improv is that McCarthy is countered by Allison Janney, whose veteran ability to keep a straight face works well, and Jason Stratham just making stuff up with a straight face works too because he's fucking KRANK. In contrast, GB was never sexist if you take that Venkman being a creep was the joke of his character, so the 'all ladies' idea fails, and there is no one to reel the improv back in, combined with no discernible script writing, and a much to tight release schedule (Fieg takes two years per movie, whereas with GB he had just one. Kind of obvious why it failed when you look at that. They probably barely had time to even start editing it properly. ).
I stopped the movie about halfway, but it definitely shows both why GB fails as well as what it could have been had it been given more time. I did feel, while I was watching GB, that it was a project that had run out of time so they just left shit in that should have been taken out and so on. Happens a lot with video games, so I can kind of tell now after playing a whole lot of those. And of course, SPECTRE had the exact same problem.
