Maybe not yet, but a re-release or two could still make TFA first domestic billion dollar movie, no? See it before it leaves the theaters, see it before Episode VIII, whatever. Even with increased drops it should still crawl to at least $950 with how humongous the starting point is, no? JW still made over $150 mil after $50 mil third weekend.

who thought 105 billion for a point break remake made sense?

The only way I can rationale that is that it was meant as a Paul Walker and Vin Diseal project

I contributed a lot of money to the box office over the past week. Saw Sisters (good movie), Star Wars (mediocre movie), and Hateful Eight (lame movie). Family almost got me to go with them to see Daddy's Home, but I drew a line.

Surprised Joy did as well as it did. It's an awful movie.
It's riding on the success of Russell's past two films.
That... or people thought it was a spinoff of Inside Out and were left with nothing but sadness upon exiting the theatre.

Jesus, that Daddy's Home drop is really impressive, even if word about the film is that it's as crappy as it looks. I guess people really wanted their Ferrell/Wahlberg reunion any way they could get it.
What I like most about this movie is that Ferrell and Wahlberg get to ruin the same movie instead of ruining two separate ones. I hope their next project is with Adam Sandler.

Alvin and the Chipmunks STILL in the top five? O:

It might actually make its budget back, whoa.
Those films are a license to print money. The Smurfs blew their load and fizzled out after half as many movies.

I expect Disney to re-release it so it eventually hits the $1 billion domestic milestone.
They just need to put it back in theaters for a limited week or two run prior to Star Wars Episode VIII. It'll get over that milestone without breaking a sweat.

I'm really curious to see how The Revenant fares this upcoming weekend. The awards buzz should definitely attract a decent crowd, but I just don't know if it's actually ever going to be profitable. Those overruns ballooned the hell of the out budget to such a crazy degree.

What the hell at the Hateful 8 reviews being... so meh/ What the hell happened to my favourite director? Its not a good movie?

:(

I'm not saying that it will, but it could now.

Not really. This weekend was 35% of its opening weekend, and it's not exhibiting the kind of legs needed for another $1.3b (even if China hits say, $400m which is itself unlikely). School is back in session, so the weekdays will be back to <$10m each.

$2.1 - $2.4b is likely.

It's a divisive film, to say the least. It's easily his most nihilistic film since Reservoir Dogs, and it takes it a step further than even that one. I think a lot of people are surprised that it's not exactly a super fun time cinematic mash-up like most of his films have been.

It's...worth watching?
I was it Friday and I thought it was great, but it's definitely not the best. I found it to be very similar to Reservoir Dogs (which is a very good thing), but the pacing dragged on quite a bit towards the third act. Worth a watch, but not Tarantino's best.

How the hell did Avatar have legs like that? I remember the hype disappeared almost immediately after people saw the movie.

I am in china as some of you know and I don't know if I will go see it the first day its released here.

Most of you have seen it, sucks that I still havent seen it for sure. I'm curious to see how many screens its on and such. There are hundreds of cinemas around though so I dont even know the best place to go watch it. I will assume there is an actual imax around here somewhere. Atleast I saw a big building that said imax but there are also small cinemas by imax too as I see them a lot here as well?

Can anyone help me out and see how many actual imax cinemas are actually in china. Not sure if my broken google search will help me or not. My chinese def. wont either.

And I just hate big crowds, even though chinese people are a lot different (Id imagine a fully packed chinese cinema would be completely quite and not crazy at all)

Every time I have went to the cinema here the only thing to annoy me were a few bright cell phones (which are even worse with 3d glasses) lol
I may go see it next monday actually when people are at work and school.

The Revenant could be a threat to TFA if TFS doesn't make it's money this week.

Will Ferrell still has legs. No one cares about Wahlberg and Sandler.

Perhaps in your circle of friends and family, but it was huge for months. Totally dominated not just the box office but the pop culture and entertainment news for that time.

Hey K-Swiss, post those charts you posted in the last thread in this one.

edit: looks like X05 had the same idea, he just actually went and got 'em instead of just lazily asking for 'em again, like I did.

X05

Upside, inside out he's livin la vida loca, He'll push and pull you down, livin la vida loca
Wait, not even $90M? Bomba
sorry bobby

Good to see that Creed broke $100M, and seems like Spectre is trying to crawl its way to $200M, seems like it'll barely make it. Also not entirely sure that Mockingjay P2 will cross $300M, looks like the only in the series that won't.

From the previous thread:
Avatar did that and it amounted to $10M domestic. Star Wars fans are a more die-hard breed, but I doubt even they would get a re-release of a film that was just in theatres to more than an additional $30M or so. The hypothetical 8 minute Ep VIII preview would be leaked before that first day was finished.

Jurassic World made $8-10M doing the same thing (minus the preview).
Wasn't JW thing a "re-expansion" rather than a re-release?

I decided to make international and worldwide comparison charts in the spirit of the domestic one posted on the previous page. I used old box office reports to plot the first 8 weekends plus LTD gross for every film over $900M international (other than Titanic since that run took forever to get going).

NOTE: Weekend 3 international and worldwide grosses for The Force Awakens have been estimated based on Friday and early Saturday data. On the scale of this graph, estimates should be close enough to the actual numbers (within $10M OS/$15M WW) to give you a good idea of how Star Wars stacks up.

NOTE 2: If people use this info to comment on the popularity of Star Wars vs other films and you disagree with them, don't blame me.

Lovely graphs :D
Good that someone liked the one I made :p

Not as big as the previous thread, but almost 3000 posts again. Way over 6000 combined.

The only time I see anything generating so many posts is maybe Avatar 2 (specially if it performs less than amazingly :p).
You'll see as many when EpVIII makes *only* ~$650M domestic and 10% less WW

Darth Sonik

we need more FPS games
TFA could theoretically beat Avatar in every individual market, and still not beat the WW total made in 2009 when the dollar was very weak.

What does this movie end up at if it has something like American Sniper legs for the rest of January? Or are those legs too long to fit Force Awakens?

Soapbox Killer

Grand Nagus
I imagine The Force Awakens will re-release this year around the time Rogue One drops. It could be the number one movie in the world twice in the same year 7-9 months apart.

Rogue One does come out in 2016 right?

December 2016 for Rogue One, then Episode VIII in May 2017 coinciding with ANH's 40th anniversary.

Here's the thing - do we really think the movie's only gonna make about 100-150 million for the rest of January/February? After making 740 in three, and scoring 90 mil in its 3rd weekend?

Depends on how heavily the return to work/school hits a movie like this. This is one you bring the whole family to and if that is sequestered to weekends going forward...idk.

I would be shocked if this movie had $250 left in the tank domestically to get to $1.

It's a movie that few people loved, but everyone felt they had to see it. The marketing department did an amazing job selling the 3D as game changing.

Is there any tracking on TFA in China? I have no idea what the expectations for it there are, how high or low the hype is, etc.

I still think $900M is the floor, personally never believed in $1B though.

TFA was still a tough ticket here all weekend and I know a few people who still want to see it that haven't yet...of course, YMMV

I revise my thoughts, upon doing a little mental math,

It's not out of the completely out of question to get to $1. I think it could get there if the 40% drops hold somewhat steady WoW.

If it has a leveling out where it holds at say, $75 for a few weekends, then yeah, it's a lock.
