People doubted him on Titanic. They doubted him on Avatar.

Hmm.

Meh. That's not really that logical. Two big surprises doesn't inherently prove a third one is on the way. I'd be willing to avatar bet, tag bet or whatever but it feels premature for now. I'm sticking to my guns to where Avatar 2 will be successful, but not anywhere near Avatar or Titanic for that matter.

The difference is both Titanic and Avatar were over budget, over schedule and everyone in Hollywood was ready to throw Cameron under the bus.

TFA also went over schedule, although only by a few months. I also thought it would be garbage, but I'm glad I was wrong. Sadly I wasn't wrong about the Cameron movies.

And they doubted him on T2. At the time it was the first movie to cross 100M budget and everyone thought he was insane to spend that much for a sequel to a low budget movie.

With Avatar, after that opening weekend he was literally in the middle of the highway already

And then the second weekend grew, so all the cars stopped

Massive production disaster=/=Harrison Ford getting rekt

Hmm.

Avatar 2 won't make more than $1.5 billion, and I'd even be shocked if it made over $1 billion at this point.

Cameron's next new IP, though? That shit could top Avatar, or at least come close. I'd never doubt Cameron in that case.

At this point, Star Trek: Beyond may outgross Star Wars in China come it's release.

I still can't believe that after 4 decades people still doubt Cameron.

I think it's mostly a knee-jerk reaction to statements such as these. Super-confident claims of total infallibility are going to bring out the contrarian in anybody, much less anybody who is even somewhat involved in the varying aspects of fandom beyond simply saying "I like thing."

That's basically all it is. Cameron is a great filmmaker when he's on, and a merely good one when he's off. He's never made a bad movie, and his tastes tend to the populist in a way that maybe only Spielberg's ever touched as consistently.

But even with that being more or less general knowledge, that sort of factoid is going to be brushed off or handwaved away when rooting interests come into play, and especially in the face of people who might be holding opposing rooting interests (silly as the entire concept may be) who say things like that with conviction approaching religious fervor. Maybe they don't actually get to that level of zealotry, but even hearing the ring of it echoing off the statement is enough to make otherwise common-sensical people go contrarian.

Gonna save this one.

Avatar 2 will make a billion dollars overseas without batting an eyelash.

I know Cameron was doubted before. Hell, I'm a huge fan. Not being a contrarian as much as I'm going with my gut. Call it what you want, bookmark my posts if you feel like, but Avatar 2 won't be doing Avatar or Titanic numbers.

Lol my ass you did

All I heard was that the director known more for his action movies was finally returning to form after sweeping the world with his unorthodox Titanic AND it was going to be the best realized world in film AND it was going to be this 3D masterpiece. I heard a lot of skepticism about this on forums, but there was also a ton of hype for it considering his previous track record. I don't think many people expected it to also be a return to form of 90s Native American pseudo-reverence/shallow environmentalism.

Anyway, I'm just trolling about Avatar 2. I honestly don't know how it will do. It's been so long and the first film didn't exactly break into popular culture like the studio probably wanted it to.

I remember a lot of articles about how the movie was going to be a financial disaster (and how Fox would manage to reduce their financial loss), the first trailer being shit, and so on.

The proof is in the pudding: FOX released Alvin in the same time period just in case Avatar faltered.

They mishandled the merchandise so badly for Avatar that I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't do super well. Even though I didn't like the first film (didn't hate it), I felt like it was a complete movie. It seems like an odd choice for a sequel given that the story is finished and the mindshare for avatar seems really, really low. Maybe enough time has passed that people will forget that once they got past the hype of 3D! that they didn't really like it that much.

Let's be real: Avatar is getting delayed again. And with writers responsible for Armageddon, War of the Worlds, and Jurassic World it'll be interesting to see how that franchise responds to earlier/ongoing criticism about its story.

Presold though, wonder if Cameron can make people embrace HFR unlike Jackson and the Hobbit

Yeah I'm really curious about this and I wonder if he's going 48fps or 60fps.

and the writers were also on Rise and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Sarah Connors chronicles.

Yes, but 3D was new back then and now they are tired of it

Because most films don't take advantage of the 3D capabilities and end up being more expensive with little to show for; Life of Pie and Avatar are the only films that enhanced the viewing experience in 3D.

Excited to see how Cameron fares with T2 3D conversion.

I feel like I'm the only person in the world who didn't see Avatar in theaters, caught it on television four years later, and said "damn, that was cool. Bring on the sequels."

3D had been around for 2-3 years. It wasn't new. People just didn't give a shit. Until Avatar made them give a shit.

But it's true that people generally don't give much of a fuck nowadays, again. Who's to say that Avatar 2 might make them care about 3D again (and HFR). Actually, people do care a when a movie is sold as a proper 3D experience, such was the case of Life of Pi and Gravity (Gravity had over 80% in 3D admissions). Really, who knows.

And don't forget Gravity which did very well.
