STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS took in an estimated $3.1M on Monday and has grossed $815.9M to date domestically. #TheForceAwakens

$17.3M Worldwide on Monday
- $3.1M domestic
- $14.2M international (including $7.2M China)

the billion dollar domestic dream is dead :(

until they do the re-release with rogue one and episode viii footage :)

Yup, Titanic cheated!

Re-releases were the only thing keeping Star Wars (ep 4) in the Top 10 domestic list post 1993. People only start having an issue with re-release cash when it means a film they like more won't get quite as high on the charts.

Colin Trevorrow presents: Star Wars: Episode IX will succeed where TFA failed. $1B domestic, $3B WW.

I don't think that warranted a serious response, friend.

I probably should have quoted the person you were replying too.

Well, that's definitely the lowest Monday so far.

International is still holding up fairly well, even ignoring China. Unfortunately, I have to jump on the $1B is dead bandwagon now. Even a re-expansion won't get it there. Weekdays are already significantly under Jurassic World at the same point. That will offset the better weekends that The Force Awakens will continue getting. I think a high 20s weekend is still possible for TFA, due to it being MLK weekend, but that would put TFA at around 1.2x what JW did for the Mon-Sun session this week. The Force Awakens needs to average 1.45x Jurassic World for the remainder of its run to hit $950M.

On the plus side, simply matching Jurassic World still gets us our first $900M domestic film. No need to be greedy I guess!

So it's looking like Star Wars might not even hit $125M in China. Tuesday was another poor hold there, and the local films this Friday are getting stronger than expected pre-orders.

I'm not shocked at all. I bet Rouge plays better over there.

Anyone who saw the performance in the other Asian countries probably should have expected this, I feel.

I'm just laughing because friends/family who barely follow this stuff were all gloating about China being the big thing that would push TFA over even Avatar.

"its freakin' Star Wars" they said

"Furious 7" they said

The nostalgia stuff is not playing very well over there. Even those who have seen the previous films are complaining that this one has basically the same story (which is sort of funny given China's love of some other derivative franchises). Perhaps Disney's big push of the OT on Chinese TV an streaming sites is backfiring a bit. A decent number of people are getting The Force Awakens there less than a year after first viewing the older films rather than decades after.

Star Wars confirmed to add Vin Diesel and SOMEHOW Paul Walker in Episode VIII

that or somebody fakes their death. Takes one for the team, and goes off to live on the island with Tupac and Elvis, get that Paul Walker/Heath Ledget effect going

fake RIP in peace

damn this post is morbid and in poor taste

Cameron continues to show who the real king of the world is. Can't wait till he slays again with Avatar 2 and everyone doubting him will eat crow.

Though it's still pretty amazing what Star Wars did domestically.

Star Wars is already about family so plugging in Vin should be easy. Just need space Corona.

You have no idea how much I burst out laughing when Kurt Russell just has a bucket of Corona waiting for Vin in the movie

That's a freaking SIX DEEP pull

Space Corona would just be Anaoroc

It's absurd! But the question remain what in the world is going to beat Avatar WW? If not Star Wars what else?

Something will get there eventually. We had to wait ~11 years between E.T. and Jurassic Park, nearly 6 between JP and Titanic, and then 12 years between Titanic and Avatar. It's only been 6 since Avatar.

So is 900 million still on the board domestic?

Yes. The Force Awakens needs about $84M to hit that mark. Jurassic World made another $92M from this point.

Yeah, if I had to guess, it'll be a new IP entirely.

Their loss. What a damn fun film, nostalgia or not; you don't need to be a SW fan to have an immensely entertaining time with it.

Also in the camp of "damn how did it not do better" in China.

It's funny, my wife's father (HK guy) was saying how TFA was just noise to him, and then proceeded to watch a ridiculous Donnie Yen movie where he spider walks on walls while killing swat men by pooping explosions into a toilet.

I highly doubt the plot of The Force Awakens is the reason for unimpressive numbers from China.

People doubted him on Titanic. They doubted him on Avatar.

Hmm.

People tend to have a lot of difficulty seeing past a director's last effort. Avatar's reception has not aged well at all with enthusiast movie fans. Maybe Avatar 2 is just more of what we saw in Avatar 1, in which case yeah, the chances of it matching its predecessor aren't great. I'd like to think Cameron is smarter than that though. He'll go to great lengths to make Avatar feel different, and that'll hopefully translate to a better movie as well.
