Most people on gaf or most people in general? Cuz the general public loved the fuck out of avatar. Not that people aren't enjoying JW too. JW is also in its honeymoon phase on gaf. People here turn on anything popular, given enough time.
I don't know why Avatar is getting so much shade thrown at it other than the predictable push back against something popular in an attempt to come across as sophisticated. It's not the best thing ever but it was still well made and fairly fun. This is the first I've heard of the action being bad for example.
1) Inside Out - $34.3M
2) Jurassic World - $29.0M - $325M total
3) Spy - $3.1M - $67M total
4) Dope - $2.4M
Avengers made $29.2M on its second Friday. Avengers will likely be well ahead tomorrow, but Father's day will probably give Jurassic World the second weekend record.
Inside Out was so fucking good, it deserves all of it. Up there as one of the top 3 Pixar movies (and i cant pick the order between Wall-E Ratattouile and Inside Out).
I thought it would open similar to MU (80M+) despite JW having a massive 2nd weekend. It's a well reviewed Pixar film that is opening in June and filling a need for a good animated family film.
Home was the last animated film that had an impact with families and that was released in March.
But it's not at all. It has no likable characters, the plot makes no sense, and the action isn't that great. It's a pure CG spectacle. That's all it has. Take that away, and it's on the level of a syfy original.
Inside Out should be fine, even with JW now and Minions in 3 weeks. It's the best reviewed Pixar film since at least Toy Story 3, and as 3N16MA said, families are starved for options. Kids love dinosaurs, but JW is a PG-13 film. If you have young children, Inside Out is probably a better choice.
I finally got to see JW on Thursday. I quite enjoyed it. It wasn't amazing, but there was nothing offensively bad about it. I definitely found myself smiling at some of those action scenes.
I never smiled once watching Avatar, that movie was booty.
Though I'm still amazed by these box office numbers. Is the word of mouth that strong? Amongst my group of friends and family, the world of mouth has been unanimously positive. Comments like "Yeah, it was good!" or "I really enjoyed it!" are common. But versus something like Avengers, where I was grinning from ear to ear after the film ended for about a week and the word of mouth was more like "HOLY SHIT BEST MOVIE EVER THEY MADE IT WORK AND IT'S AMAZING"... I'm just amazed Jurassic World is the film that will take down many of Avengers box office records.
It's cool, though. Like I said, I enjoyed the film, so I'm not exactly opposed to these numbers. More dinosaurs is a good thing.
At this point, I think we can all easily guess who Spider-Man's first villain will be with the MCU. No, not Green Goblin or Doc Ock...
If you take inflation into account, E.T. and Titanic are neck in neck for the highest initial runs in movie history. Nothing is likely to get that high again going forward due to increased theatre competition and the 3-6 month window until home video release.

Rocky Horror Picture Show is destined to be the highest grossing film of all time at some point in history. It's still running on its limited initial release 40 years later!
Boxoffice.com has Jurassic World's opening weekend at a predicted $103.3M, which would put it less than 300k over Avengers' second weekend. If things are that close, we might be waiting until Monday again to see the record go down (or not go down).

IO had a special showing on Tuesday (I believe tickets were $23 around here). Behind the scenes, Q&A with Docter and the cast, included a few giveaway items. That gross is being included in the Friday estimate which is inflating it a bit.
It would be amazing if it could increase on Saturday.

I'd be very impressed if JW manages to take the second weekend record, what with having business taken away with summer numbers and having a $90M family oriented debut vs the staggering performance of Dark Shadows with avengers
Even if it doesnt take the record its gross is more impressive.

I feel like the same five people on GAF are on some mission to convince the world that Avatar was anything but forgettable schlock. Most summer blockbusters worth a damn are better than it.

I saw Avatar once in theaters and got the blu ray. It was pretty much impossible for me to sit through the movie again from start to finish; not because it was painfully bad, but simply out of boredom. At least once a year I realize I have the blu ray and think "hmm, yeah I could go for Avatar", but less than halfway through I have my fill and start doing something else.
