That'd be pretty unprecedented, wouldn't it? A 100 million 2nd weekend beating a 70 mil opening?

We've never had a $70M+ opening not take the #1 spot. Day after Tomorrow was the closest to that with $68M. There are a number of $60M+ films that missed #1 as well (usually on holiday weekends).

EDIT: Hollywood Reporter posted a (super) early Friday estimate/prediction of $25-27M for Inside Out. That number will likely fluctuate as the night progresses but it would put it a little under Monsters University's first day

They are guessing $90-100M for Jurassic World, but I think that may just be common sense predicting.

BOM has actually been active this past week which is surprising.

JW and IO looks likes another Catching Fire and Frozen situation at the box office. Only both look like they will have bigger weekends.

Holy shit. Unless my math is off that would put JW passed (if not extremely close to it) the original Jurassic Park's entire domestic total after just two weeks. Who could have predicted that?

It would be over JP's initial run of $357M and slightly under it's total run including 3D re-release.

Early Friday estimates peg Inside Out at 34-36M and JW at 29-31M. That is a huge number for IO and it easily surpasses the 30M MU grossed which led to a 82M OW.

I didn't see estimates that high for Inside Out. More like $30m or so. Still an impressive number.

And obviously the predictions for the weekend show JW making a huge surge Saturday and Inside Out declining from opening day.

Insider on boxoffice.com put up the estimates. Not concrete but he has a good history of coming pretty close.

Deadline:
In addition –and heading into the weekend it didn’t look like this was gonna happen — JW will post the best second weekend haul of all-time with a current projection of $106M-$108M at 4,291 theaters, licking Avengers’ second sesh of $103.05M.
second best Pixar bow of all-time with an estimated $83M at 3,946 playdates, behind Toy Story 3’s $110.3M and ahead of the ani house’s last feature toon, 2013’s Monsters University ($82.4M).
a rather close Friday between JW and Inside Out, $32.8M to $30.7M. Today’s IO receipts are also propped by last night’s $3.7M plus 661 Tuesday Fathom shows.
Deadline should hire an infographic person, I'd love to watch weekend estimates shift around in chart form as new updates come in.

(Also a copy editor, but I think they've all been slaughtered to appease the clickbait gods or something.)

OUTSTANDING numbers for inside out (and Jurassic world of course)
I'm actually quite surprised that both have managed to do so well without eating into each other, but well deserved on both counts.
Io managing to beet monsters university is ridiculous

Absolutely fantastic figure fo IO. My optimistic expectation (as well as Disneys) was around 60-70M and with JW reeking havoc the last one week would have slightly put some doubts over its OW projections.

If JW manages to beat the 2nd weekend record, then that's the last of the Avengers record gone.

FF7 = Over-performed
Ultron = Under-performed
JW = Over-performed
IO = Over-pefomed*

Avatar may not be the most original story, or have the most likeable or complex characters, but it is a very well executed blockbuster. That's something JW isn't.

Heck, I don't even like Avatar much, but it's not even close.

Correction - week and a half.

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/openingweeks.htm

That's $26 million ahead of Avengers. It's amazing considering it was only $1 million ahead on the weekend.

Jurassic World going for Titanic's $658 million.
If JW trends like Avengers from here on out, it will beat Titanic's total.

I dont believe in counting re-re-re-re-release numbers.

Genuine question: shouldn't inflation be taken into account when doing this kind of comparisons? And if not, is there a specific reason? At least when comparing domestic BO numbers.

If you just count admissions, nothing would come close to the older movies before home video and even tvs. Movies had 12+ month runs. There are places that rank them like that though.

But it's not at all. It has no likable characters, the plot makes no sense, and the action isn't that great. It's a pure CG spectacle. That's all it has. Take that away, and it's on the level of a syfy original.

This post describes Jurassic World so perfectly.

The action in JW better than Avatar?

Take the red pill, bro.

On top of that, one has to consider the era that the films are released in. It's impressive to note how much money Gone With the Wind would make if tickets were $10 like they are today, but back in 1939, the list of things that audiences would actually pay $10 for would assuredly not include movie tickets.

At this point in my life I already realised that the biggest blockbusters are not the one who "deserve it", I was born with the curse of not being part of the "general audiences", and I think it's time to stop projecting myself and watch the ride from afar.

What are you, the Beettlejuice of Cameron? Does he pay you or something?

I've simply been blessed with two working eyes.

I think that $29m is slightly under Avengers second Friday. It will need a great Father's Day hold to break the record because Saturday will be smaller. Summer weekdays also inflate Friday.

Avengers 2nd Friday was $29 million or so. It's near enough the same. Saturday for the Avengers was $40 million I think, if I'm remembering correctly from last night.

Elated to see JW doing these insane numbers. I along with everyone in my program that I have spoken to about the film, student and professor, have greatly enjoyed it.
