Wolfenstein: The New Order; PC Performance Thread

Did you try that file that I posted at the top of this page that has a new exe in it?

I tried but the link went to a website that tried to make me download all sorts of crap.

so it is a common issue that the game seems to have occasional bouts of HEAVY slowdown then settles back into place? Weridly enough, it didn't happen in the beginning, only once i started storming deathshead's HQ

ive got a gtx 770 and a 4770k, using triple buffering with max settings @ 1080p.

Do you have page file on? Pagefile destroyed my framerate until I turned it off.

Could have just been my rig though!

Just want to check the games running right .....

I cant help but feel that maybe the rendering resolution is lower than my selected resolution, I could be wrong and its just the jaggies making me think so, but many occasions so far, it looks like its running lower than it should. Does the game use dynamic resolution on the PC version ?

I have everything set to the highest in game (i5 3570k, 8GB DDR3, GTX 970 4GB), and I remember people mentioning the textures weren't the greatest in the game, but I want to check, do these look right to you guys ? I have compression off.

Yeah, you'll see jaggies unless you use the console to force msaa or you downsample. Back when I played this, the console msaa didn't seem to want to "stick" between loading screens, which was annoying.

Boo, I thought I miraculously fixed the vsync issues in this game long ago, but I tried re-playing the game today and they're back. I remember forcing vsync on CCC was what fixed it, but I guess not... Maybe i dreamed it up. Oh well, I finished the game already months ago, just felt like wrapping up a death incarnate run after all the GOTY mentions reminded me this was an awesome game.

Man, I didn't think Wolfenstein of all games would be utterly broken for me on PC.

I'm running the game with a:

i5 3570k and GTX970 and I'm literally getting 15-25 fps during gameplay. It's quite literally unplayable. I've tried mucking with the graphics settings to no avail. I have the beta drivers from Nvidia so maybe that is the cause of the problem I'm going to try to rollback and see what happens.

That is weird. I have the same cpu and a slightly less powerful gpu (2x780 sli, obviously only using one card in wolf). Using 1080p, ultra settings, screen space reflections disabled and 8x msaa added, the game usually runs 60 fps with some minor hitches every now and then. Have you tried overclocking your 3570k? (I run mine at 4.6Ghz)

What resolution are you trying to play at and is DSR enabled?

I've been reading up on the Steam forums and apparently some people have a locked PCI express rate @1x instead of 16x I took a look at GPU-Z and apparently I'm having a similar issue with my PCI slot as well.

Could this be the issue? I might be SOL if it is because I don't have space on my mobo to switch slots.

Mine runs at @4.2Ghz 4.6 was too unstable for me.

1080p and no DSR.

Alright sorry for the double post but I resolved the issue. Apparently I was using a PCE express 2.0 @16x slot instead of the pci express 3.0 @16x. I'm now getting a solid 60fps in Wolfenstein though my videocard is still only running at 8x.

I'm not gonna fuck around with it anymore though, it's good enough.

This is definitely what caused your issue. Games using the idtech5 engine hit the PCI-E bus really hard too.
The slot should be at 3.0 16x, unless you have other PCI-E devices in other slots or maybe a lot of SATA devices. At the moment, there are no GPUs that even push the 3.0 8x speed, so you should be OK.
I suggest reading the manual for your motherboard though. It might explain why the slot is not operating at 16x.

I've given up on the PC version because of the performance issues. I'm going to get the PS4 version which is a rock solid 60fps.

I have 5 sata hard drives and my PCIE speed is 3.0 x16, how could a number of sata devices hamper my PCIE bus speed ?

Does anyone know where to stick a downloaded save for this game?

My PC buggered up thanks to a crappy microsoft update which suddenly claimed that after 2 years of no problems that my copy of windows wasn't genuine. I had to do a fresh install to fix it.

Now unfortunately this game doesn't use steam cloud saving and I really can't be bothered playing through all of it again.

After all the GOTY talk, I've decided to play through this (or rather finish it) and I'm wondering if anyone has gotten around the lack of proper SLI support?

I know the idtech engine wasn't really built to work with SLI but there's a profile for it in inspector with the SLI bits profile of 0x00000004 selected. It's also selected for Rage.

It doesn't seem to be actually working though as indicated by afterburner showing gpu2 totally idle.

The DX1x sli bits though is disabled. Do I need to set it to the same value as the one below it? Or will that not make any difference?

It sucks because my 970 is running right around 45~50 fps with everything maxed out @ 1440p and I really want to hit 60fps so that I can take screenshots without having to worry about flipping back and fourth in the options menu to turn stuff down when I want to go back to playing.

I'm guessing you probably have already found the answer but if not:

C:\Users\<username>\Saved Games\MachineGames\Wolfenstein The New Order\base\savegame

FIY, that's also where Crysis 3 and evil within saves are stored (assuming more also but those are the only other games I have installed that happen to put the saves there)

Completed the game, had a few perks left over that I wanted to obtain. My brother came round today and logged into his Steam account, started a new game, now when Ive came back to mine, my progress has vanished along with all my perks I had unlocked, and I cant chapter select levels now.

Guess there's no way to get back my old saves is there ?

I don't think so, unless you have a back-up. He was probably logged in under your Windows user account when he played and clicked through the message warning that the progress would be lost.
Saves for the game are held in your Windows user space and the game doesn't support Steam Cloud saves. Consider creating a separate user account for your brother to use.

Getting under 60fps in spots with my r9 290 and i5 2500k @ 4.0ghz, what gives? Benchmakes indicate I shouldn't have issues.

If you bothered to research a bit you would have known AMD OpenGL drivers aren't stellar, thus a 290 can sweat playing this while it should not.

The thread already has lots of information and your post gives little information for anyone wanting to help.

I've tried some of the solutions in this thread. What more info would you like? I have an i5 2500k @4.0ghz, 8gb of ram and the latest drivers. While what you say about openGL is true, why do all the benchmarks I've read say that an r9290 should have no issue keeping 60 fps?

Different parts of games can be more or less stressful. Unless a benchmark for a given game has minimums far far above 60 and/or the journalist specifies that its a worst case for performance, you cant assume the entire game will play at 60+ throughout.

You don't say what resolution you're playing at, let alone the settings you're using in the game or what you've tried to change. If you'd like help on these kind of topics, try to save responders as much time as possible.
Anyway, the most expensive settings in this game are Screen-Space Reflections, Shadow Resolution and Additional Quality Settings. Also try Max PPF settings between 16 and 64.

Sorry for not supplying enough info, I'm not trying to be vague out of laziness. I am playing the game at max settings at 1080p; lowering all settings to low increased the framerate in some of the more graphically intense areas, but regardless of graphical setting I run into this issue where if I quickly move the camera around the framerate will momentarily dip to about 40, 45 then shoot back up to 60 again. What I don't understand is why I should have to lower any graphical settings in the first place when I have a card that, in New Order benchmarks, has been listed as being able to play this game maxed out at a solid 60 fps.

Oh man. I am soooo glad I saw your post. Feeling sheepish, but it took having major issues running this game at even the lowest settings to realize something was amiss. Then I saw your post and checked my own PCI-e rate (@x4) to realize I had my GTX 970 in the wrong slot!

I'm perversely glad that the id engine is so dependent on bus speed. I wouldn't have noticed this stupid mistake otherwise.

Well I'm glad I saw this too, because I just had to check for myself and then I saw that my PCI-E slot is set to 1.1 instead of 2.0. Basically my GPU only has half the bandwidth to work it that my motherboard can supply :lol. Gotta change that in Bios, ugh.

Edit: Ah, nevermind, my motherboard just turns 2.0 functionality off when there's no load.

So I have the following system:

Intel i7 6-Core
Windows 7 64-Bit
24gb Ram
Geforce GTX 590 (3gb)

I get less then a single frame when I run this game. Anybody know how to fix this? Doesn't seem like my GTX 590 wants to run this game at all. Worse performance I've seen on any game I've tried so I'm assuming something is broke.

Any fixes?

Picked this up in a sale for cheap a while ago and started playing it earlier in the week. Liking it a lot and running at a constant 60fps with all the in-game settings maxed on my GTX680.

There's just one thing that bothers me - quite considerably, too: the loading times between deaths are absurd. Probably 15-20 seconds at their worst. I have it installed on my aging Crucial M4 256GB, but it's never given me any grief so I doubt it's the drive. Any pointers?

The 590 is a dual GPU card right? Since this game doesn't support multi GPU you're only getting half of your card. Also you might be running out of VRAM, use afterburner to check how much it's using.

That is definitely a possiblity. Please also make sure you adjust the amount of virtual memory your machine uses.

So I recently upgrade my card to a GTX 980, and I figured I should at least be able to play this game on High settings. But I'm continuously getting drops to 20fps on high action parts. Is this normal?

I run the game off a HDD, and my OS off an SSD. I created the cache folder on my SSD but that didn't seem to help.

The only time I get a solid 60fps is on Low, but I feel like my card should be able to handle a lot more than that.

I don't understand how the Resolution setting works in this game. I'm playing at native 1440p and it won't let me choose any other DSR option than 3840 x 2160, even though I have ticked all the resolution boxes in between 1440p and 4K in the control panel. The in-game toggle will just not let me pick any other resolutions.

But then also, whenever I change the resolution, NOTHING happens. The game doesn't even have that moment where the screen goes black and you're asked to confirm. Whenever I change the resolution, I actually don't change the resolution, because 720p gives me the same image as 4K. I also know that I'm not actually changing my resolution because my MSI Afterburner on-screen display also doesn't change in size, while it normally does when changing resolutions.

Does anyone recognize this? What's going on? I want to use DSR in this game!

Get out of the menus, scrub!
But seriously, you need to set the resolution via cfg or using the console if you want to use Nvidia DSR. Open the console and type r_mode followed by tab. It should display a list of valid resolutions with a corresponding mode number.
To set the mode, enter r_mode followed by the number. Then enter vid_restart to apply the change.

Wow, that's handy! (not..) Strange that this is the way to do it though.. I wonder why. But thanks, I'll try this, man!

Edit: it works.

Check that your GPU is in a PCI-E slot configured at the highest rate possible. This game relies heavily on streaming data from storage to GPU memory. Consult Nvidia Inspector or GPU-Z while the game is running.

So some textures seem awfully low-res. I assume that the VT cache size settings controls texture quality? It's set on Ultra, but some still look pretty bad. Does this game have a known bug/issue with texture quality?

Also, it seems every time I move my view to a new area it seems like the textures are streamed in too slow. As in: I can actually see the half-loaded texture while playing and it's really visually annoying. Would installing to my SSD do the trick?

Now that I've got a GTX970. I might try this game out again.
Has there been any recent performance improvement patches?

Aaaaand I've also got stuttering. On my G-sync monitor, so it has to be engine stuttering. Fuck PC gaming sometimes, really.
