Wolfenstein: The New Order; PC Performance Thread

Could someone let me know if there's some trick to getting good performance on this setup? Game feels like it's rattling apart on the lowest possible settings.

FX 4170
Catalyst 14.4

I've been tirelessly searching for a solution the past 2 days and haven't found a damn thing that has worked. I think I just have to wait for new drivers from AMD or a patch from Machine Games. It is unplayable.

14.4 is the recommended driver version for this game. PCI-E 2.0 16x is equal to PCI-E 3.0 8x. This should be sufficient for much better performance than you are getting. Can you use MSI Afterburner with On Screen Display to see how your GPU utilisation is? You should get something like this:

14473827006_4eef14d4d6_o.jpg

Is this still necessary since 1.0.0.2?

GPU usage stays around 25%. The highest I ever saw in go in a 10 minute session was 40%. This was playing in 1440p with the Low preset and only getting an erratic 35fps average (constantly will huge dips down into single digit FPS)

I found something that has actually improve my performance a lot. Down this file and extract it into your main directory where the game's .exe is found. Launch the game from the new .exe. This had my game running locked at 60fps, but every setting in the graphics menu is set to "VALUE" and can not be changed.

Yeah, that file did the trick since it's not so shaky now. I really think id tech 4 is the enemy of an all-AMD setup, I jumped through the same hoops to get acceptable performance out of Rage.

To anyone playing this game with multiple nvidia GPUs in your system and getting worse performance than you'd expect (even taking into account SLI is unsupported), I advise you to do the following:

1. Disable SLI globally in the nvidia control panel.
2. Disable your extra GPUs in Device Manager.
3. Make sure you're using set vt_usecudatranscode = ”1” either in WolfConfig.cfg or in the console.

This really improves performance for me. I believe that this game has the same bug present in RAGE, that prevents CUDA transcoding being used if the system has more than one GPU installed.

Has there been any talk of an SLI profile ever coming out?

This reminds me of a bug that the 64-bit build of RAGE used to have on Steam. It would randomly cause single-digit frame rates.

The fix was to open Steam, then delete or move the file AppOverlay64.dll from your Steam directory before running the game (the file is re-created by Steam when it's launched). It's worth a try at this stage.

If this doesn't help or you don't have the Steam version of the game, then you could try the strange tip some have found solves their problems. Rename the game's executable from WolfNewOrder_x64.exe to anything (keep the extension of course). This improves performance for some according to posts here and on Bethesda's forums. For others it does nothing.

Can someone please tell me if this will work smoothly on my system? I just had it made.

Core i3 4130 3.4 ghz processor
Gigabyte AMD Radeon 270x 2 GB OC
4 GB DDR3 Corsair Vengeance ram.

Will be appreciated.

Here are the patch notes:

Patch release notes
- Added driver version detection for supported AMD and NVIDIA GPUs
- Added independent VO volume control
- Added audio device selection in Audio Options menu
- Bug fix to prevent anisotropic filtering being disabled every time the player dies
- Enabling multisampling antialiasing through the in-game console will no longer break skin shaders and reflections
- Fix for invalid screen resolutions being set after driver updates or swapping monitors
- “Ultra” settings updated to use lower values for VT Cache and Shadow Buffer size (original values can still be accessed through ‘Custom’ settings)

I'm really glad MachineGames helped out with the MSAA and AF issues and are supporting people tinkering via the console instead of locking out commands like other devs do. That's one advantage to having no online modes, I suppose.

Is there any way to make Steam big picture overlay work right? If I press the guide button it kinda warps back to the game after a couple of a seconds, and every time an achievement pops it goes to single digit fps.

I'm able to run it great and get a solid 60 FPS with everything maxed out, but I have horrible screen tearing (even worse than Titanfall, and that can be pretty bad) despite having V-Sync on. Is there anything I can do or am I just screwed?

I had to force it through drivers I think.

Force through Nvidia Inspector.

Getting good performance now after this patch on default Ultra setting.

Where did you find this? Suddenly the game runs like silk for me. Is this equal to low settings? What sorcery is this?

The in game vsync is adaptive type. You will observe tearing if your frame rate falls below 60. This approach is used to reduce stuttering from frequent frame rate changes.

If you don't want to use an adaptive type vsync, disable vsync in the game and use an external vsync solution.

So is there any INI tweak to fix the texture pop-in? It's really starting to bug me. It's not glaringly obvious, but I'll notice it every now and then after a quick turn around. I've tried every combination of the in-game settings and can't get rid of it that way.

Since this is an OpenGL game you can force triple buffering through your standard GPU drivers, you don't even need something like D3DOverrider or RadeonPro. Disable in-game Vsync and then enable "standard" (not adaptive) Vsync in the GPU control panel, along with triple buffering.

I'm not especially sensitive to frame changes (at least not the occasional drop). I've only noticed my frames occasionally dropping during cut scenes and I have everything cranked to ultra/max. Then again though, frames could be dropping and once I'm 5-10 minutes into playing, I don't typically notice tearing or dips during gameplay.

i7 3770K, SSD, 16GB RAM, 760GTX 4GB.

This is odd, lots of posts in here saying they're getting at or close to 60fps on High with 560ti.

I have a i5 2500 @ 4.5ghz and 560ti slightly overclocked. With most settings on Medium and one or two on High, I'm getting console-like performance. What the hell?

Holy shit, that works great. Thanks for posting this.

What does this file actually do? Can someone take comparison shots?

It always blows my mind how friends can't notice frame drops when I'm watching and can see it.

I'm pretty sensitive to that stuff and notice slight changes.

And to expand, I run Crysis 3 on High and get a locked 30fps, with Wolfenstein at medium the game looks far inferior to Crysis 3 and also runs noticeably jerkier.

I'm having a rather unique problem with this, at least for me. I'd appreciate any help that can be offered.

The menus and the gameplay runs fine on low settings. Like, 20-30 FPS fairly consistently. But as soon as ANYTHING has to load or run in the background of the gameplay, I get a two to three minute freeze. Game has to load? Freeze. Cutscene has to load? Freeze. Scripted sequence upcoming? Freeze. Bring up the Steam overlay? Freeze. It's absurd. And any one of these freezes has a chance of just not resolving at all and I have to hold down the power button to restart my laptop.

It's probably a CPU problem, at least it would seem like one to me. I have 4GB of RAM and a 1.4 GHz quad core CPU and a 1GB GPU, and I know my laptop is on the low end of the spectrum. But I can run almost anything decently on low settings. Crysis, Witcher 2, Metro, whatever. And the little bit of actual gameplay I've gotten to enjoy has ran fine. But I've only played up until the swimming and turret part at the beginning between 10 gameplay sessions and a total of 2 hours played. That's how bad it is.

Am I just incapable of running this? My laptop is kinda on its last legs anyway and I have a lot of just general performance issues, but it still has done alright for games as of late. I've heard from a friend that putting an SSD in there could help, but I know eventually I'm just gonna need to get a big boy computer. If only it didn't take so much money.

Help?

I was searching for tons of fixes and came across this Russian YouTube video that had that file in the description. I was pretty desperate for a fix so I gave it a shot and it worked. What's weird though is sometimes the graphics options come up as "VALUE" and other times it lets me customize them

Seriously, the fuck kinda magic is in the new exe? Runs super smooth on my laptop now with no freezing during loading, albeit the occasional hiccup in a cutscene. Is it like some kind of ultra-low performance thing? The difference is crazy.

I'm not entirely sure tbh. I'll take some comparison shots when I get home

It's an everything issue. You're running out of VRAM, and your CPU isn't fast enough. 4GB's of RAM isn't helping either.

Make sure MSAA isn't being forced on. You'll have to disable it with the dev console if it is.

I drop frames every time I turn the camera around. So the game is mostly always running between 55 and 60fps, and even when fraps says 60fps it doesn't feel like 60fps. What the shit is up with his game, is it even possible to truly lock this thing at 60fps? Annoys the shit out of me that console gamers with vastly inferior hardware are getting a better experience, even the PS360 gamers. 280X+4670K here. Is there a magical setting I'm missing? High or ultra, it's all the same.

I hate id tech 5. :|

No matter what I do, I can't enable MSAA in the console or in the cfg file. Not sure what is the problem. The eye-searing jaggies won't go away. How can I inject SMAA into this thing? I'm trying with RadeonPro but I get no results.

I think SSAA is disabled inengine
Or is that AF above 16x?

There must be some LTTP fellas like me, I was scared reading some of you having trouble with this game, so I'm posting my info here, hope it helps.

I'm achieving 1080p with constant 60fps with everything maxed out except VT Compression wich is On, besides that I'm forcing triple buffering, Vsync and 4x MSAA through Nvidia control panel, this is my rig:

i5 2500K OC'd to 4.2GHz
Gigabyte GTX 780 GHz Edition 3GB
RAM 8GB

I'll try some Downsampling later and VT compression off and post the results as well.

I know this is late and probably been covered already, but I finally managed to get this game to behave properly on my rig, and I thought I'd share in case it helps others.

Specs:
i5 3570K@4.4Ghz
32GB RAM
GTX 690
Samsung Evo SSD
Windows 8.1

The 690 is roughly like a 670 when running just one core.

The key for me was dropping Additional Quality Settings to Medium. This took care of the frame drops when approaching NPCs.

1. In-game settings

Consider dropping Max PPF to 16 if you have a weaker CPU.

2. Nvidia Control Panel

Disable SLI (since I'm on a 690)

Make sure your refresh rate is set to 60hz in windows, if you have a screen that's capable of other refresh rates.

Manage 3D settings:

Maximum Pre-rendered Frames: 1
Vsync: On

3. wolfConfig.cfg

Location: C:\Users\<username>\Saved Games\MachineGames\Wolfenstein The New Order\base

Add these two lines to the bottom of the file:

image_anisotropy "16"
vt_usecudatranscode "1"

It's important that you do this last, as changing the in game settings can cause wolfconfig.cfg to drop these lines.

Now I'm playing away at 60FPS and finally enjoying the game properly. Hope it helps someone!

What should I have all the texture settings if I'm running on a 2GB 760 (at 1080p)?

Games like this that have texture settings should really tell you how much VRAM the settings typically take up.

I'm going to try to squeeze this game on to my 128GB SSD. Is there a relatively quick way to move a game from one drive to another?

You should be able to set textures to maximum, as long as you are sure to enable texture compression.

So have all the other texture settings at max, but leave them compressed?

Any configs people have set up for a 760?

I would turn off screen space reflections. It's very costly and you probably won't miss them. The settings deepo is using above is probably a good start.

Are there any fixes for stuttering on this game.

I've running a quad core i5 at 4ghz and a GTX 560 1GB (Non ti) and I'm getting stuttering. Even when I run it at a low resolution. I can't seem to maintain a steady framerate.
