Grand Opening Of The Wizarding World Of Harry Potter At Universal Orlando Resort Set For June 18

Universal Orlando Also Unveils Details for the Highly Anticipated New Attraction: Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey

ORLANDO, Fla. (March 25, 2010) - One of the most widely anticipated theme park entertainment experiences ever created - The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort - is set for a public grand opening on June 18.

Today, Universal Orlando Resort also revealed details about what is expected to be one the most exciting theme park experiences ever created: Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. It will be one of three themed attractions within The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, including Flight of the Hippogriff and Dragon Challenge.

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey is the heart of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. This all new adventure combines a powerful storyline with spectacular new technology so effectively that guests will be completely immersed in the experience.

And as they live their adventure, guests will feel things no one has ever felt inside a theme park attraction, move in ways no one has ever moved, experience film like no one else ever has, explore vast sets punctuated by amazing special effects - and have an adventure only possible in Harry Potter's world.

The new attraction lies deep within Hogwarts castle, a majestic structure that towers over The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - the only place in the world where the wonder, excitement and adventure of the Harry Potter books and films comes to life.

The Adventure

Imagine...

...meeting Harry, Ron and Hermione as if they were in person
...soaring over Hogwarts castle with Harry
...being swept into a Quidditch match
...feeling the chilling effect of a Dementor
...exploring your favorite places inside Hogwarts castle
...living adventures you've only been able to imagine - until now.

The Story
Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey draws you into the excitement and chaos of Harry's life. As you venture through Hogwarts castle, you meet Harry, Ron and Hermione who convince you to skip a planned lecture and follow them. Upon taking their advice, you travel by Floo powder, and begin the adventure as you soar over Hogwarts, narrowly escape a dragon attack, have a close encounter with the Whomping Willow, get pulled into a Quidditch match and more.

"Guests will experience firsthand a completely new adventure featuring the iconic characters, amazing creatures and recognizable locations they've only read in the books or seen in the films," said Thierry Coup, creative director for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

The Location
The Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey experience starts as soon as you walk through the gates of Hogwarts. Within the towering Hogwarts castle, you explore a truly magical place. You journey through iconic locations taken from the films and take in the extraordinary detail of each scene. They include:

Dumbledore's office: Here, you meet the Headmaster as he welcomes you to Hogwarts
Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom: Where you first meet Harry, Ron and Hermione

Gryffindor common room: You meet three additional characters who prepare you for your journey

Room of Requirement: Here, with hundreds of floating candles above, you take your seat on an enchanted bench and begin the Forbidden Journey

Other locations: In addition, guests will pass through the Dungeon passageway and hallways of Hogwarts where they will have the chance to see hundreds of wizard portraits from the films, including several magical talking portraits created exclusively for The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, including the four founders of Hogwarts. Guests will even get a glimpse of the Sorting Hat.

The Innovation
This is more than just an attraction and it is unlike any theme park experience ever created. It's a revolutionary, 360-degree theme park experience and first-ever combination of live-action, advanced robotic technology and innovative filmmaking - specially designed and developed for this brand-new adventure.

"We have created an entirely new way to place our guests into the heart of one of the most compelling stories of our time," said Mark Woodbury, president of Universal Creative. "What we have done will forever change the theme park attraction experience."

The attraction's newly created ride system envelops guests in filmed action scenes and moves those scenes with them as they travel through the ride, allowing more time in the center of the adventure and with their favorite characters. This fusion of robotic technology and filmed scenes has never been achieved until now. In some cases, technology had to be invented to achieve the highest level of guest experience. The combination of pioneering, state-of-the-art technology, innovative filmmaking and surprises around every corner make this attraction the embodiment of the Harry Potter book and film series-and the future of theme park entertainment.

WOOT WOOT.

Never read the books, and I didnt even see the last movie that was released. But I am a TOTAL sucker for theme park rides...espically ones this state of the art. Can't wait!!!

So stoked for this. I hope I get a chance to visit this when I stay with my brother this summer in FL.

The moving portraits are incredible looking (see Video), hard to believe those are just in the line waiting to go on the ride.

I will be in town on June 22nd..going to stop by for sure.

Book 7 completely killed any enthusiasm I had left for this franchise, so I'll steer clear of this one, thanks.

It's a theme park ride, and serves no purpose to the overall story. So who cares?

You honestly wouldn't ride a roller coaster because you didn't like how the story its based on ended?

WTF is wrong with GAF? :lol

That's like saying you won't ride the Haunted Mansion at Disney World because you dislike Eddie Murphy.

I was at Islands of Adventure a couple weeks ago and saw them building it. Looked pretty cool but Dueling Dragons was closed since they're retrofitting it to fit this :[

I'm simply saying that I'm not interested in this particular theme park attraction because I'm no longer interested in the series itself.

If there are some decent rides, I'd probably give it a chance. But the "Harry Potter" aspect alone doesn't really pique my interest. I'm hardly the only person to experience Harry Potter fatigue.

If you've never been to Islands of Adventure, it was well worth going to even before the Potter area was built.

Seriously, and based on the reaction to ONE of SEVEN books, no less.

I definitely plan on going there next time I'm in Orlando. I stuck to WDW last time I was in the area, but I plan on making it to Universal next time.

Ms. Rowling has gotten plenty of money from me already. I doubt she needs any more. :lol

yeah..I kinda see your point. Like I posted eariler, Ive never read the books, and havent seen the last movie. I don't really care all that much about that. I'm much more interesting in the ride itself then the subject matter. No doubt the construction of the Castle, along with the town is amazing. The attention to detail is astounding ot me.

Not sure if you have even been to Islands of Adventure...but they have a Marvel Super Hero Island...now my wife hates comic books, and movies, but insisted that we go on the Spiderman ride multiple times each visit. She could care less about Spiderman, the ride is just too awesome to pass up.

Will be in WDW from May 8th to 15th. Wonder if this will be open (yes, I know what the guy said in the interview :P).

EDIT: Is it worth going to Universal Studios for a day even if this thing isn't open yet?

I'm from Ohio, so unfortunately for Orlando, the bulk of my amusement park money is going toward Cedar Point.

I LOVE Cedar Point...been there one time, and brag about it ever sense. Been trying to plan a trip there for years. Went the year after Millimum Force opened (the best coaster Ive ever been on)..but before Dragster and Maverick. Maybe next year. I live in Florida so Ive been to all the parks plenty of times.

I doubt the actual ride will change. They'll probably just change everything else to make it fit in to the Harry Potter world (like the stuff in the line).

It depends on a few things...

1. Do you like Roller Coaster/Thrill Rides?
The majority of Islands of Adventure rides are Thrill based. There is only 1 kiddy ride which is Cat in the Hat (and even that ride is pretty fun, kinda like a Toad's Wild Ride remake)

2. Do you have small children with yeah?
Most of the rides have height requirements.

That being said Islands of Adventure has some of the best rides of any theme park. The Hulk Coaster is constantly listed on the top 10 coasters in the US..and the Dueling Dragons isnt far from the tree. Spiderman is one of the coolest rides ever, and all three water rides Jurassic Park, Dudly Do Right, and Popeye are all a ton of fun.

The other side of the park...Universal Studios..has some cool thrill rides like The Mummy, and The Simpsons, and the new Rock and Roll Coaster..which I havent ridden yet..but overall its much more family friendly then Islands of Adventure.

I say it's definitely worth going to IOA..especially if Potter is open. There is a rumor that soft opening will start Mid May...
I doubt the actual ride will change. They'll probably just change everything else to make it fit in to the Harry Potter world (like the stuff in the line).

that's exactly what Im talking about. I hope they dont try to lighten it up. The Dueling Dragon castle is extrememly dark and creepy, I just hope they dont turn on the lights and blast harry potter music..would totally ruin it IMO.

I will admit it does have some of the best coasters in the world, but the themeing is pretty weak in comparison to the stuff you find in Orlando. Also it's a bit over crowded with coasters..not much they can do about that I guess.

I was on holiday in Florida a couple of weeks ago from the UK and was beyond annoyed that Dueling Dragons was closed. I've waited for years to ride it and it's a shame I'll never be able to in its original state. But hey, it's as good an excuse as any to go back next year!

My brother has an annual pass to Universal and he said they get to go a couple of weeks before the official opening. Lucky!

I don't live in Florida anymore so I'm going to have to make a trip down there some time later this year. Make an excuse to take my nephews, although the trip to Harry Potter world will be for me

Yeah, that's true. It's definitely an "amusement" park and not a "theme" park.

But you can't beat the coasters and rides. It blows pretty much every other park out of the water in that respect.

Holy shit. That looks like something out of Rollercoaster Tycoon.

How big is Hogwarts itself? Is it one of those distance-trickery things where its only the size of a shack?

I used to live in Ohio. Word has it that the town keeps the deaths as quiet as possible. My uncle and cousin used to work there during their college summers.

The dragster killed 2 people in its first month of being open. The first choked on their gum, the second choked on their vomit.
