Soccer, yes Soccer, Is the 4th most popular sport in the US, over taking Hockey and is breathing down Baseball's neck. When, not if, it becomes #2, 3, the world will see a serious World Cup contender in the US. More and more kids are playing Soccer now a days, watching and learning from the best leagues around the world. It's only a matter of time, might take 20, 30+ years, but it will happen.

Being the best team doesn't guarentee you win the world cup. Look at Canada and Ice Hockey, they should be winning left and right but they aren't.

The only team sport the US plays that the rest of the world follows is the NBA. And the dominance is not what it once was, every olympics the margin get tighter. Basketball popularity is nowhere near what soccer is.

If you think getting to the round of 16 means you are close to winning, you are nowhere near. It just get harder and harder.

I've only seen some of the games, but so far Australia might be the most boring team I've seen. The entire first half they played keep away passing it back and forth - including back to their own goalie a million times. Out of all that I dont think they even had one good scoring chance. It's like their plan all game is to to that hoping to pull out a 1-0 win in extra time or win in penalty kicks.

Not every team is Saudi Arabia. They are playing against Argentina so they must play defensively.

Googling it, the 4th most popular sport is a survey among sports fans who said what they'd watch on TV. It'll never be a huge cohesive group because the fan base is split across different leagues as per the link where media money is split across the MLS and tons of Euro leagues. So in totality it looks like it's creeping up, but in isolation the soccer fans are split up a lot where more people probably follow EPL than MLS.

Soccer has always been a sport where kids grow up playing it in US/Canada. I did too. In grade school my parents paid $40 to play annual house league and the only things extra they needed to buy me were cleats and shin guards. On the other hand, some kids I knew were playing ice hockey in rec leagues where new skates, gear and sticks probably cost them $1000 every few years. It's often the first sport kids play because it's the easiest to learn and requires little gear or specialized facilities (rinks or baseball diamonds). But in Canada/US, when kids grow up they do other sports.

I must say, Argentina dominated this minus a few select chances and that lucky goal. This should be a 2-0 win and Australia completely outclassed.

No, should have been a 2-3 Australia
I guess we were watching a different game. These two teams are not in the same class. Based on what did happen, it should have been 2-0. Australia got that gift but it happens. Argentina controlled the game

61/39 possession Argentina
688/422 passes Argentina
Total shots 13/4 Argentina

I'll give credit for the goalie saves for both teams but that doesn't change the score since both goalies came through and if we're hypothesizing, Argentina could have had a couple more goals or their own.

The score was 2-1 in the end and the better team won.

The problem is that one side has Messi and the other has the goalkeeper doing mess.
Every time I see a team pass back to their goalie, I love it. There's probably a higher chance of flubbing it leading to a scoring chance for the other team than normal gameplay during the course of the match.

Dont forget to check out the Canadian goalie flub against Morocco. A beauty.

Guess the world cup of upsets is over. Top teams are playing like they should now. Looking at the rest of the 16 matches, its gonna be one sided for days. But hey, Qfinals will be dramatic as fuck now.

Messi was active throughout but Australia played pretty defensively until the game opened up. He had his normal contributions and a few nice jukes.

Pele, his daughter said he was doing alright but that was a few days ago.

He decided the game with his few nice jukes.

Corrected for you.

The problem is that football (yeah) right now favors the defensive play of Swiss, Poland, Australia etc. and every Argentina's game so far has been pretty mediocre. But Messi is deciding with his few tricks and gaining confidence.

If Holland :) can defend like Australia, attack that not so confident Argentina's mid/defense and neutralize Messi they have every chance to win.
Netherlands is a infinitely better team than Australia and can play football.

it will be an interesting game.

No joke, he is.

The name does come from scottish/irish ancestry, but its been multiple generations now and even his dad had near 0 relations anymore to those countries.

Not nearly the same as for example jorginho playing for italy despite not even growing up in the country, but because his great-grandfather was italian.

One of these years the USA is going to win the World Cup, and while the rest of the world are losing their minds, most of the US will be unaware of the World Cup even occurring.

It might just be a sign of the apocalypse, but I'll be there for it.
