Chances are high that the first settlers on Mars will die relatively early, face potentially horrible catastrophes, and overall live difficult lives. However, they will also be given the privilege to experience what no other human has or will for some time (potentially generations). They would be a part of history.

Would you join their ranks and sacrifice your life here on Earth and if so, why?

One time my friend invited me to play on his Minecraft server. I didn't have a good time, I wasn't into the game, but what I did enjoy doing was baking cakes, and hiding them in the strangest of places. In random caves, underwater, or in a random spot under the soil. After I uninstalled the game, he would keep messaging me--"YOU HID A CAKE UNDER THE LAKE?" "UNDER THE HOUSE?" "YOU'RE SO WEIRD."

For generations to come they'll keep finding my Martian cakes. Tourists will go on scavenger hunts, hoping to make the evening news with a sugary discovery.

I'd go on the third or fourth wave of colonization, where I'd be able to last longer than a few weeks. The first waves will basically be dealing with Mars as a pre-pre-pre-pre-alpha product, 99.999% hostile towards the human animal. The downside of being part of the first wave wouldn't just be death, it'd be an unbelievable pain in the ass living there.

No. If something were to go wrong, which it will, there would be no chance of rescue or salvation. Also consider that non-earth planets not only are inconducive to human life. Anything needed to live would have to come from earth, which ultimately begs the question of the purpose of an interplanetary colony in the first place. You would have to have some sort of sustainable environment with usable resources like on earth for any long term settlement to succeed, as I expect there to be long times for supply refreshment (I believe conservative estimates are at least 3 to 6 months, but realistically much longer).
