Would gaming be dead without Japan?

It’s mind blowing how much Japan contributes to gaming. No other country remotely comes close. From hardware to software, they just seem to produce gold.

From Software, Atlus, SquareEnix, Nintendo, Sony, Capcom, Sega, Bandai Namco, Platinum, Arc System… and the list doesn’t end.

If you removed everything non-Japan, gaming would still thrive, but if you removed Japan from gaming, it would be on life support.
I thank Japan for Yakuza, Resident evil, and DMC.
 
Nah it would be fine. There are many non Japanese companies / devs throughout the years that didn't need to rely on Japan and that continues to be true. Of course with Japan included, it's a good thing and I'm not trying to imply otherwise.

Sad things is, Japanese companies / devs can be just as shit and lazy as any other country. Monster Hunter Wilds, Wild Hearts, Nintendo pricing, microtransactions in every game from Resident Evil to Tekken the list goes on. Japan is not some special case that shows respect to the consumer, no matter how hard they smile you.

Let’s not forget some great strategy games, ex. Paradox’ CK, EU and HOI series.

And even in the “dawn” of gaming age there were a ton of European studios from UK especially.

If somehow all of Japan decided tomorrow to stop the production of all games and hardware, it would be a hit, no doubt, on the hardware side, I think it would be more serious.

As for games, I think there is a fair amount of people that in their library have just a small percentage of Japanese games, I for one, from 180 Steam games, 30 are Japanese.
It would be a poorer market of course, in terms of choice, different styles, etc., but I think gaming would survive.
 
It wouldn't be dead but it would be very shitty, and the industry wouldn't be the titan it is today.

The country has had a massive impact on video game history. That is not opinion, that is not conjecture, but fact. Anyone that wants to argue that really don't understand the history of this industry.

To be dismissive and say only weebos think like that is stupid and shortsighted.
 
Wukong has sold like 3.5 million in PS5 on China, way less than on PC but I wouldn't call that "very little".
I dunno, I would. Roughly 50% of Chinese are active gamers, so around 700 million people. That means that even though Wukong is easily the most successful Chinese console release of all time, only 1 out of 200 Chinese gamers actually own a copy on console. That sure seems like very little to me.

Japan carried the industry hard after the video game crash.

I don't know if anyone else would have revitilzed gaming if it wasn't for nintendo and playstatioon during the 80s/90s.

Damn, GGs! I haven't really played HSR all that much (I think I have about 30 hours in it), but I have pulls saved up from daily logins, and I'm going to try my luck once her banner drops, because those animations are absolute peak, lol!

If I get her I might actually start playing HSR for real. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Edit: Even her animation when entering the battlefield is dope af. And she also gets her very own Bloodborne stage, lol.

No, not even close. Probably a vast difference in quality and preference, but not dead.
Indie games will probably thrive a lot more (I hope) than they do now.

no but western dominate industry would be bad. lacking variety of the culture design philosophy while at same time all the DEI crap will ruin gaming as general.

decades of japanese industry existence so far serve as check and balance IMO.

If you do that math with any game you find low percentages of users have concrete games. Thing is PlayStation 4 did 3.5 million LTD in all in China, and now one year ago not even mid generation one game sold that much copies in China on PS5. The growth is palpable.

Japan development was left behind when they were developing a new engine for each new game they developed. That was insane but that was the way they did videogames.

To me it's already dead anyway because japanese devs have more or less given up on staying faithful to their game-design legacy. But yes they were the ones keeping video games alive.

But this is not just any game, it's the most popular game. I wouldn't be surprised if Wukong had a higher attach rate on PS5 in China than GTA 5 does in the West. And yet I'm also pretty sure if you checked how many Western gamers had a console copy of GTA 5, the ratio would be a hell of a lot higher than 1 in 200, even launch time adjusted.
