Would gaming be dead without Japan?

There’s always good games to be made and found.

Without them the void would be more crucial to fill and some would rise to fill it.

For me the innovation has faded with Sony’s AAA games.

This gen they’ve just been more of the same with more pixels and worse stories.

You know me, look at any Sony vs Microsoft thread, so I don’t say it lightly when I say Sony’s output has declined.
If that's how you feel, that's that I guess.

I don't see how their output is that much worse than previous gens.🤷🏾‍♂️

The biggest reason I got in to PlayStation was for its Japanese titles.

This gen that’s mostly gone, I honestly don’t care for their western game exclusives.

Currently the only reason I keep my PS5 around is for 3rd party games.
That's fair and reasonable.

I never was into most of Sony's 1st party output anyway, so it's like I think that everything they release is pure gold.

I like Japanese games but the endless exaggeration and fawning is so over the top. Its not just the OP, but the majority sentiment on here. Of all the games currently installed on my hard drive, only 4 are Japanese. The other 79 are from US, Europe, Korea, China.
Yep. Imagine if someone responded flippantly saying “Only if you’re a weeb.”

Gaming would be very different if atari had no real competition (because youd be taking out nintendo, sega and sony)

Xbox likely wouldn’t exist either because their existence is directly owed to sony rejecting them and sega’s dreamcast design

Come to think of it…halo would be owned by apple still, so apple mightve taken over the gap

For me it would, since 90% of the games I play are Japanese and mostly lost interest in majority of western games.

I continue love gaming entirely thanks to Japanese games.
Same. Nothing against western produced games, they just bore me to tears. I can't put my finger on why though.

I swear, your thoughts replicate mine to the letter. I got with Sony just for the sheer number of interesting Japanese games. Mainly JRPGs from the PS1.

I play a lot of Star Rail, Genshin and CoD.
The Japanese game I am currently playing is Monster Hunter Wilds (and Astro Bot sometimes).
Yeah, it's kind of similar with me. I'm currently playing one JP game (Heaven Burns Red), three CN games (Wuthering Waves, Genshin, and ZZZ), and one NA game (AC Shadows).

Going to play another JP game soon though since it just arrived in the mail earlier this week (Venus Vacation Prism).

Definitely not since the western side spawned many great hits like Halo, Half Life, World of Warcraft, Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Witcher 3, Dream Daddy, GTA etc etc.

And recently there’s starting to be some great non Japanese Eastern games too like Stellar Blade, Wukong,

The last Japanese game I truly loved was Hi-Fi Rush and even then it was a brainchild of an American developer. That said, games made in Japan have made a tremendous impact in gaming over the decades, some are hugely influential, but to say gaming would be dead without is nonsense.

considering the first video game was tennis for two which was made in america and the fact that Atari is the main reason anybody in the US knows about gaming to begin with, not to mention the microcomputer boom in europe throughout the 80s.... nah. Westerners contributed a fair share too.

But they're easily the GOAT in terms of total contribution. A good 60% of the gaming genres we have today on console came from Japan and the NES more specifically.
There's a reason gaming has a lot of crossover with weeaboos and weeb culture

Diversity in gaming in gaming would make it a dead industry. We would be need different types of artists to make games, Which is why I don't understand why Kojima would say that games aren't art. They are absolutely an art, and we need different views in games to make as diverse a medium as it is now. I love that Japan's video games are different from the west. I think have different types of games and design philosophies are a thing and I think that's more of an issue of how people view design across the globe. I don't think it's necessarily a Japanese thing.

Well, for me japanese game design is simply way better. The layers of depth of playability, the gaming loop, art design, music, sense of epicness..

Without Japan we would still have some indies, competitive FPS, some city builders or civilization strategy games, some action games and some walking simulators, and some western RPGs . Gaming wouldn't die, it just would be mostly uninteresting to many.

It’s mind blowing how much Japan contributes to gaming. No other country remotely comes close. From hardware to software, they just seem to produce gold.

From Software, Atlus, SquareEnix, Nintendo, Sony, Capcom, Sega, Bandai Namco, Platinum, Arc System… and the list doesn’t end.

If you removed everything non-Japan, gaming would still thrive, but if you removed Japan from gaming, it would be on life support.
Imagine we only have xbox, gogle stadia and amazon luna consoles wise..
Ofc 0 jrpgs, fighters of any kind(no 2d fighters, no 3d fighters, and not even any beatem ups like final fight/streets of rage/double dragon series, nothing), mortal kombat had no predecesor so it didnt came to exist either.
Racers wise only need for speed/burnout but since we never got gran turismo, we never getting project gotham/forza series that were competition/answer to gran turismo either, no asseto corsa series, no project cars etc. Arcade racers like daytona or ridge racer- gone, sega rally- gone too, f355 challenge gone too ofc.
0 games based on anime of any kind either.
No shenmue and no yakuza games either...
No mario/donkey kong/sonic/kirby so whole platforming genre would be so much worse too, we would maybe still get some western platforming classics like pitfall or earthworm jim but would they be so good like they were, who really knows...
No konami so no contra, mgs series, no winning eleven/iternational superstar soccer so fifa has no competition aka is really terrible all the time since 0 reason to get better.
Fuck, that gaming reality would be the darkest timline, 100x more darker than even 100% trump tariffs on everything :p

I adore Japanese games but no, hell no matter of fact.

If someone thinks only Japanese games are good, that's a surefire way to tell they're a weeb who just arbitrarily limits their experiences, and I say that as someone whose favorite games are MegaMan X and 3rd Strike. There are countless incredible Western games, same for Eastern, and the industry would support itself just fine off either one without the other; this should speak to the size and expansiveness of the industry in general.

I think so, yes.

Or, it'd be close to death with China & Korea helping keep it somewhat alive. At the present time, I'm not sure if the Western side (especially in AAA) is doing much for gaming creatively. Although financially, I guess stuff like COD, FC Club etc. are as big as ever, let alone what a mammoth GTA6 will very likely be.

asinine to assume that nothing else would have come along and filled those voids.

How many of those 79 were inspired (or downright clones) of Japanese games though?
