It was one of the most over-the-top murders. The writters should have at least throw in that he was drugged or something, just Doe pointing a gun at him to do something so disturbing isn't enough.

I disagree. In forcing Pitt to kill him, Wrath's life is effectively ruined. The beauty in him being Envy (murdered by Wrath) is that it completes his perfect crime.

Well in theory he'd be sent to a fate worse than death if allowed to live, and that by shooting him we're letting him off easy. So funny, letting him live can actually be seen as the colder, more vengeful move.

I always assumed Det. Mills would be released during his hearing for the killing of John Doe. I mean he took down a serial killer and was emotionally wrecked as well. It would have made zero sense for any judge to convict Det. Mills for killing Doe and handing out a jail sentence.

So, Mills was right to shoot Doe in the face because I'd have done the same in that state of mind/situation. It's just that I would have to live with the rest of my life knowing I gave the killer of my wife and many others the satisfaction he wanted.
