Would you let your son play with dolls?

I was at work today and a little boy about 6 or 7 wanted to buy Power Puff girls game for PS2. The mom told him no because that was "for girls". He said he wanted the Powerpuff girls and nothing else and the mom raised her voice and told him he wasn't getting it. The boy was sweetest kid though. I felt sorry for him when he had to settle for some ATV Offroad game which couldn't have been anymore of a "boys" game.

So, would you let your kid play with dolls and "girly" things if they wanted? I know no parent wants their kid to have gender confusion but where does letting kid develop naturally end and a parent trying to shape who their kid is?

I think it's alright if they're playing dolls with their sister, or some other female family member. I always took Barbie's clothes off.

I saw a mother buy a Nancy Drew game for her son... But I suppose that is more acceptable. Either way, my son would get a whuppin'.

Fuck NO!!! Unless its like Cubsfan said but if they play with the Ken Doll....wait.......isn't Ken gay? Then Fuck No!

I say let your kid grow into their own. Every child is different, and what I think a lot of guys don't seem to understand (and try to forget) is that all boys go through that stage where they don't like girls and have almost a boyfriend/girlfriend type friendships with other boys.

I see too many parents trying to shape their child into their own ideal image. If your boy likes to play with dolls, he's going to do it one way or another.

i don't try to forget it, it simply never happened. i had guy friends, still do, sure, but GF/BY type relationship???

And I find it interesting how different the culture is here and in japan. In Japan, it's acceptable for boys to play with dolls and like female characters. In the US, it's frowned upon, yet in the US it's ok for boys to play with male dolls/figures that have briefs with HUGE bulges and not much else. In the US it's ok for boys to watch men roll around with other men, but it's terrible for them to actually play with a doll that happens to be a girl. WTF kind of logic is that?

And that's exactly the type of attitude what leads young gay boys and girls to depressing and possibly suicide.

If my son was gay he would still get a whuppin' for playing with dolls.

They are not necessarily related.

WTF? If the 'action figure' doesn't come with a gun or is a superhero, normal american boys don't play with it.

My parent's were cool when I asked them to buy me a Jem and the Holograms doll or She-Ra action figures, and I am thankful for it. They probably worried a little bit, but I was none the worse for it.

And that's related to perception and what is driven into the american society about how a boy should act, behave, and like. And if a boy happens to like Power Puff Girls or wants something that might be marketed towards girls, does that make him not normal? I never played with dolls growing up and I'm gay. I have a friend who played with barbies growing up and now he happens to be the straightest guy I know.

Anyway, there is a good percentage of guys who have homosexual relations before or around puberty. I'm trying to find the study where it states that, but I remember reading it sometime ago.

I wouldn't care. Any kids I have can like what they like, as long as they're not taking a liking to black tar heroin or something. A toy isn't going to affect a kid's mindset, I don't think, and denying them a specific type of toy is going to limit their ability to imagine, and I would like any child I have to be able to imagine anything as a possibility.

That said, I had a customer the other day who threatened to buy his son Hello Kitty anime if he didn't "stop being bad." I got the man's attention and asked him why that was punishment. He said because it's for girls. I told him that I own some of those Hello Kitty dvds, and there's nothing pro-girl or pro-boy about them. He looked like he wanted to slug me or something, but luckily his kid is not old enough to know that his dad's a closeminded tool.

and in my native country its perfectly natural for friends (guys) to walk hand in hand, in fact if you were to visit, you'd think a majority of the population is gay.
but you would be mistaken.
all cultures have their idiosyncracies...whats very acceptable in one culture is completely strange in another. thats normal.
anyway...i'd get sorta creeped out if i saw my son play with dolls and perhaps have a talk with him when he grew a bit older. but i'd NEVER try to shape him in any way. if he turns out gay, then so be it.
the game i'd let him play, hell i think power puff girls are pretty funky, and the theme song is awesome.

Yep...and as for the guns/weapons comment, i don't think you need to have the proportional equivalent of having 30" arms, striated to hell, and veiny as hell, just to carry a gun, and stuff like Wrestling(which i'll concede loving as a kid/teen), and Football, can be as gay as you can get sometimes.

Anyway, PPG's is pretty high on the violent side...it's not like my little pony or something.

Man, I was totally hot for Rainbow Bright when I was a kid, and if I'd had one I don't know what kind of shit I would have done with it or how I'd have turned out today.

So I guess it's prolly a good thing that I never got one, and that I had plenty of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle instead. That samurai rabbit was badassed.

Wasn't Usagi Yojimbo a cross over character?

Huge bulges? What the hell kind of GI Joes were you playing with?

From what I remember, my Thundercats were packing big schlongs.

Yeah, I don't think that'd go over well with parents if male dolls actually had huge bulges in the crotch.

Meh I played with dolls (barbie, my little pony, care bears) right along side my GiJOEs, ninja turtles and he-man and micro machines.

I am not messed up in any way.

I played with my sister's Barbie dolls when I was little. I used them as foot soldiers for my ninja turtles to beat up, despite the fact that they were twice the size of the turtles.

Heh, I remember some comedy sketch on a TV show where a boy wanted to play barbies and his dad wanted him to play with GI Joe type figures, but from the boy's perspective the barbies were real chicks and then he looked at the dad with the big gay army men, haha. Awesoma.

i haven't watched much PPG, but the thing is, they're superheroes who kick ass and just happen to be girls. The show can easily be enjoyed by both sexes because it doesn't focus heavily on interest traditionally associated with girls. Dolls, the kind marketed at girls, are much more female-centric in this case. It's more about dressing them up to make them look pretty than it is kicking ass, or firing sidewinders.

And yeah, i always ripped Barbie's clothes off. Below the belt, disappointment awaited.

yeah, I remember it, shooting bubbles at things if I recall, it was pretty fun much like all the other Disney NES games.

as I was quickly scrolling up, I noticed these pictures:

gafjake18.jpg

which, when scrolling up, would be the order your eye would notice them, being that that's the order they would appear onscreen.

ANYHOW, somehow, my mind merged them into this, and I thought I'd share:

I got a ton of puppets from my sister as a child,i would usually take the clothes off,rip them apart and paint them(red eyes and tatoes and stuff),then put them back together with parts from other puppets.Maybe i should have become Plastic Surgeon or something.
