Wouldn't the internet suck for people who can't read or speak English?

"Television must suck in other countries, do they even get the jokes in sitcoms?"

There are alot of US shows shown here in Taiwan where the entire audience must be people who lived in/have family in North America, because they are missing alot of pop culture references and context.

Hahah, ofcourse I should've expected GAF to respond with exaggerated reactions and pile up like this. I know the internet has its own communities in various languages and obviously they can communicate there using their own languages. I'm bilingual myself. My main question was about memes which seem to be prevalent in English, and coudn't help but wonder if other languages have their own variations of memes, or if they would feel "lost", similar to people not getting an '"inside joke" amongst their friends that they missed out on because they weren't there in the moment. Really, you guys need to chill.

I don't know if OP is joking or not because that's a laughably stupid statement. But I'll answer you anyway.

English is not my first language, so I experience the internet in two different languages and in my mother tongue we have our own websites, jokes, cultures and communities. And this wacky loud internet culture is part of English internet culture, and is not necessarily found in other languages on the internet. There's a whole different world you haven't experienced OP.

There are too few untranslatable memes. Dat boy perhaps, but that's stupid. They have their own memes just as we have posted, it's ok OP, no one needs to know everything and there are things that work better in context.

But one thing is clear, the international internet absolutely doesn't suck

Learning English really does broaden your horizons on the internet, considering most of the content is in that language. There's a lot of content in other languages too, but knowing English is extremely practical, especially for relatively niche subjects.

I'd hate to learn programming without knowing English for example. So many online resources and documentation you wouldn't be able to use.

Knowing other languages can be useful too. I'm always surprised how useful knowing French can be when random google searches bring me to French websites.

啊哈哈哈哈哈哈哈哈
After meeting a few newer Chinese students from work, I realized that I don't get their memes or their internet jokes.

I'm glad you guys exist.

Internet memes and slang have less to do specifically with language than with culture. There is nothing about the existence of such things which links it to the English language. So it would be strange to assume that they are less prevalent in other languages or in other cultures. Even among English speakers on English websites and in communities communicating in English, the social makeup of the community based on their interests, backgrounds, and geographical locations would severely alter the sort of jokes and casual lingo used, regardless of actual language.

I feel that having to ask such a question in the first place suggests a failure in understanding how these things work...

Duckroll is being nice, for once I don't know why.

The truth is your question was dumb OP.

There is plenty out there if you don't speak English.

It is actually a pretty fantastic resource for learning a foreign language, you just have to know where to look.

Amazing thing is that if you search for a term in any language you will probably find sites that are in that language. So if you only search for stuff in English it might seem like stuff is only in English, but try searching for something in Japanese, most results will lead to a Japanese website.

I guess with translators it's not that bad. However with software documentation it can be, since there's a ton of software coming out of companies that speak English.

I honestly think my life would be better if I didn't understand all of these stupid memes. Thank you based god is dumb as hell

This question reminds me of being in science class in middle school and someone asking the teacher if it rains where we are, is it raining everywhere in the world.

Everyone is bashing the OP but he is right. 90% of my media based entertainment is in English. But then again i live in a country that actually learned that you can put subs instead of dubs on movies and series so we actually understand english.

Nice try but you were asking "Does the non-english community of the internet have their own funny memes and things similar to us?" Yes, humor also works in other languages. Also memes are not the be all end all of humor.
