WoW has taken over my gaming time completely

Havent touched anything since it came out. I still need to finish the last few missions for San Andreas and Halo has gone untouched for weeks now because I was putting it off till I finished those SA missions. I havent bought Prime 2 or MGS3 yet (getting KotOR 2 though just because I already ordered it off Outpost when it had that killer deal) and now I probably wont bother renewing Xbox Live since it doesnt seem worth it at this point.

In the long run, WoW might save me some money!

Worse, I have received 4 games from ebay (games I really wanted) and didn't even tested them yet (received them at the beginnning of the week) !

Now, what I'm really waiting for is my brand new R9800P. Life as changed forevarrrrrr.

I HATE THIS GAME!!!

I only signed on with a guest pass to please a friend. And now I'm behind in work, skipping meals, totally ignoring my 3D reel, and completely lacking in sleep. What starts off as a quick 30minute play turns into hours upon hours.

Completely wretched game!

I have to be forced to stop playing.

Luckily I am starting to recognize enough that when the wife forces me to stop, I should probably stop.

My normal bedtime is around 10:30 (early first shifter). Since wow my typical bedtime has been 12:30-1:30...

This is why I'm going to wait to get WoW until I've finished GTA:SA, Halo2, Rome:TW and about a dozen other games that have been released this year. :lol

I use the Cosmos UI Alarm, I set it for an hour and play, when the alarm goes off, I force myself to take a break and do something productive

This is a good idea.

This game is destroying the very limited time I have to play games period, especially all the good Xmas titles I haven't finished.

I have to say...this is my first MMORPG. The addictive nature is definitely all I've heard about. It's quite easy to grind away some hours...doing the most mundane tasks. And it's strange, at these low levels, grinding is basically what you're doing. The process is done well...and there's always the carrot of the next level or skills hanging in front of you to drive you on. The thing is, most of the time you feel this pressure to keep finding the most efficient way to of doing that levelling. Everyone around you (if your still a noob) is frantically doing the same, killing that, crafting this...it's an immersion, but it's a different immersion than you might feel from a more ordinary rpg. It's like a rpg mechanics immersion, lol.

Anyhow, I don't know how long I'll play, I'm only at the surface of it. But when I am on, I'm trying not to be obsessive about being "efficient" and just enjoying the setting (which is beautiful) and events more. The world is vast and worth exploring, but it's far more a resource to be plundered than a setting for unique events so far.

I've put into this game tons of hours already. Scary to type /played and see how much time has gone by while playing the game.

I'm assuming this is true for the thread starter as well. The cosmos idea sounds good and I would recommend using that. MMOs can be pretty addictive...though only the good ones. In contrast, shit games like Lineage II cannot draw someone in.

As this for all intents & purposes is my first MMORPG, I am in the same boat as you Musashi. It's definitely odd to be so captivated by a system that is so transparent. I mean I see I am being led along like that, but I agree that it is immensely satisfying.

I'm not really competing against anyone else and am barely grouping, but it still holds my attention better than most games this year, and that's odd.

I've /played about 9 hours in 2 days. I've only seen something like 4 or 5 different towns and I am still in the first section of the map (when I zoom out the map & see the sheer scope of the thing, it's mind-boggling). That sort of pacing would be deadly on a console RPG, but here I am totally okay with it for some reason.

I agree that I am not sure how long this obvious treadmill of a game will last for me, but for now it is completely satisfying despite the transparency of it all.

Actually, now that I think about it DQVII is even slower-paced than this game, and I didn't mind that any.

to me the game isn't a treadmill... actually this is only the second ever MMORPG (COH being the first) where I didn't pay any attention to my level and have actually had moments where I tried to rush and get stuff done before I leveled.

Everyone talks about the treadmill. Carrot on a stick. The only goal is to get to the next level. this game (and COH before it) have been different for me. The goal isn't to level, it is to explore. I don't care about leveling, I just want to go out and see stuff. Valley of Trials, Orgrimmar, The Barrens, the various Oasises (Stagnant, Lushwater, Forgotten), the Wailing Caverns, Ashenvale, Thunder Bluff, the Venture Co. stuff, Ratchet, Merchant Coast, Northwatch Stronghold, Silverpine Forest, Trisfal, etc.. and that is just with the horde. So far with the Alliance (which arguably is a completely separate game) I have seen Ironforge, Stormwind, and dozens of locales in between (mostly obviously been playing hordes).

the sense of exploration in this game is mind blowing. Not zoning (except for mass transit and instances) really adds to that. I get almost giddy each time I get that gong sound that indicates I have received exploration XP for finding a new location.. I absolutely love looking at my world map and seeing the locations fill out in their old world scrawl format.

and fighting new monsters and viewing new wonders...

for me, leveling is just something that happens as I am doing the stuff I really want to do. If you are playing this game to level and gain more power, I pity you. You should be playing to see all there is to see in this game. I've been playing for 10 days and when I look at my world map realize I haven't even seen a tenth of the world yet... it will probably be months yet before I see most of it... that is pretty awe inspiring.

Haven't tried this yet, but it sounds like a fantastic idea. :)

Nope, played EQ from beta 4 until Augustish 2001. But had been playing a pay-per MUD known as DragonRealms from 96 to 99 when I got into early beta.. then dabbled with it over the next year or two when I got sick of EQ.

I feel sort of the same, but in the same breath, a lot of the Horde quests as a Tauren are really...assout boring treadmill BS. "Kill 10 Blahs, 5 Bleeghs, and 8 grahs." Out of like 18 quests, I think 8-10 of them are like that. Gets a bit old.

It's like that more at the start, for sure. Later on, even the quests that are like that let you at least go to a new are to kill Blahs and Bleeghs.

So I have more travel time to kill 18 Bleeghs now? Woot! >.>

Heh heh, true.

I haven't reached a point where this game becomes more like work, but I can certainly see it crossing that line in theory. If it does, GAME OVER. :D

time spent in game: 2 days, 19 hours, 3 minutes.

time owned game. 9 days. That's almost 1/3rd of the past week spent playing.

Its starting to slow down now that i'm level 21. The quests are starting to get boring because they're just the same thing over and over and over again, but i'm still having fun.

there are other types of quests.. I have had a quest so far where it was "exchange this keg of beer with that one" but when you get there there is a guard on the keg who you then have to buy pint of beer for to lure him away. there is also the infamous samophlange quest in which you have to operate all of these switches and wheels to shut it down and then fight the head tinkerer guy. and of course the collection quests where it isn't fighting but instead having to retrieve something from a heavily populated area.. of course solo I really don't feel like fighting 20+ raptors so I release my VW and sneak around and try to get to the treasure with as little fighting as possible.

my favorite though are the timed errand quests. I got one for thunder bluff that I'm assuming I was supposed to get BEFORE I opened up that flight path. anyway, they gave me 45 minutes to complete it. they give the quest to you in XR. so, talk to the wind master, fly there, and 2.5 minutes later the quest is completed... LOL!!!!!

oh, and the other raptor quest where I had to kill raptors and get a feather dropped from them and use the feather on the three mounds in the area.

there are a decent variety of quests.. there is also this stupid escort quest in WC where you have to keep possibly the dumbest NPC ever alive as you escort him through the cavern...

and this stuff is all sub-20.

Yes, I realize there are other types of quests. =P However at this stage, the majority are a) kill 6/8/10/15 of these or b) I need 4/6/8 claws from this/that/the other. Which essentially is WORSE cuz they don't drop all the time. So, I lump them in together. I realize it's a way to get the xp flowing, but man is it mindnumbing. This is only at lvl 10 too. >.>

in direct regards to the "mind-numbingness" of the most proliferant types of quest (killing and/or collecting), for me again, it is a little different. I am a warlock. so every 2 levels I get different spells that change things up pretty dramatically. after level 10, I get talents which about, I would say, every 3-6 levels again change things pretty dramatically. Then ever 10 levels I get a new pet which again, changes things pretty dramtically.

So for me at least, with a warlock, while I may be just killing monsters over and over or collecting things over and over, for most of the quests, the fact that every 2-4 levels (which for me have gone amazingly fast) the WAY I do this changes pretty markedly, means that I am in FACT not doing the same thing over and over.

at least that is how it has always seemed to me..

This is a good point. I can see that. Experience is not quite the same for a Warrior though. ^^; Hack, slash, spend money repairing equipment. Hack, slash, repeat. Find new equipment. lol Luckily I like the crafting so much. I just quit questing and craft for a long time.
