WoW Open Beta

I must be really lucky then. After I signed up, I was immediately given my key (on FP's page and then in my email as well), and started d/l'ing the client. It's a 1.5GBish zip. Not sure if you can grab it from FP w/o a subscription though.

I'm at about 400mb's d/l'ing, and thx for Firefox, i'm not even sure what my current rate is.

That's the link I got in my email and it takes me to the download page. I had huge caching issues with FP btw, and had to clear everything. I got my key about 5 minutes after signing up, but that was before FP was getting hammered as much as it is now. My friend is having issues registering atm.

I couldn't get the site to function at all in IE, i had no problems in Opera however

Signed up easily enough...still waiting on my batch of keys to be sent.

That link still just takes me to the signup page, even when I click 'download'. =/ Hmmmmm. Maybe I'll just wait and try again in a little bit.

Same with me. Atleast i' not alone. Heh, this sucks and Fileplanet sucks. good thing it was my bro who paid for this subscription. :D

ok I have my key but where is the link on FP to actually DOWNLOAD the client?

edit: make sure your logged in before you click on the wow main page link, I wasnt and it kept asking me to sign up but after I logged in manuelly through main page it worked fine

Fuck Blizzard. What the fuck world are we living in where we have to PAY for the "priviledge" of beta testing their software? What bullshit.

All I say is that the FilePlanet execs better be giving the Blizzard execs some damn good head.

Edit: I do like the irony in using the term "stress test" when they're intentionally limiting the number of people that can play. They should have at least chosen a better term, such as "the whoring ourselves out to FilePlanet so we can get a shitload more money test".

*sigh*... guess it's a blessing-- at least I have an extra week to actually work on my schoolwork. Double Edit: But I'll probably end up just playing GTA:SA and UT2K4 anyhow :)

Guess I'll just wait for open beta. I've waited at least a month for it already, another week won't kill me. No way I'm paying for stress test.

Seriously, this is gay. I've not once said to myself "boy I sure wish I had a fileplanet subscription", so there is no way in hell signing up would be worth it. I'll wait a week and put that $15 towards the retail product.

Just $15 for 3 month sub to FP has given me:

WoW Stress Test 1
Tribes: Vengeance Beta
WoW Stress Test 2
+
regular chances to get into other betas (Matrix, Eq2)

All at awesome speeds with no waits.

Don't mean to sound like an advertisement, but I considered my $15 to be worth every cent.

Yeah, but it sucks if you're already a FP subscriber and still can't get the benefits of being a subscriber. I have tried all the links here and even used Opera and still get the stupid signup page. Oh well, I guess I'll try doing something else for the time being and let this stuff sort itself out.

Apparently, closed beta accounts can't see the ST servers, and ST accounts cant see the closed beta servers. So CB holders may want to nab a ST account if you were planning on playing with others.

This extends into the open beta aswell.

I only signed up because this is the only taste of WoW i'm gonna be getting until it's released early next year over here. Plus, $15 converted to uk pounds really aint much :)

Ewww. Hope that's not true. I realized that the stress test was on another server where I couldn't use my current characters, but I thought we'd be able to create new ones on that server.

:lol

Went away to watch a movie and came back to see FP servers are getting smashed. The DL speeds are in the toilet.

Why do we have to pay for this one and not the first one? Did they just decide, "HEY! Lets make people pay this time so we can get more money that we don't need!"

Indeed! I heard they were going to have a bon fire with hard earned gamer dollars. It's also rumored that a few randomly chosen beta testers will be roasted on this flame and eaten by cannibal Fileplanet/Blizzard Execs!

I signed up but account isn't activated yet, but clicking the links again and trying anyway I notice the price went up. It's $16.95 now I could have swore it was 15.95 20 minutes ago.

Guess I will finish this up tomorrow...my DL just hit rock bottom speeds (FP) because at this time of night, my DSL goes crappy. Wish Verizon would hurry up and fix this :D

Well, I caved and subscribed to fileplanet, but I did the monthly plan for 6.95 and just got my email with the cdkey and downloading right now. So unless I got extremely lucky, you don't have to sign up to the $15-$16 dollar plan to get in.

i am just waiting for my stupid email with my key in it

when did you get to the confirmation page where it said it would send an email?

Woah, correction. The file size for the FP d/l is way bigger than 1.5 gigs. Firefox's d/l manager states a 1.5 gig file but it's way past that.

*curses firefox*

when did you get to the confirmation page where it said it would send an email?

I got it right after I signed up for it actually. I believe the page had a link to a faq for the fileplanet download and stresstest also.

what i meant was how long after you saw the confirmation page did you get the email with beta key and download link?

I am going about 3 hours here

yah, screw this. I'll wait for open beta. If they truly are releasing somewhere mid-late this month it can't be far away.

Wow this is fucked up. God damn Mozilla wth are you doing?

First it gives me an incorrect file size in the download manager (-1.5 GB), now that it's around the 2.2 GB mark, it starts to go backwards. The file size showing is -1570273kb, and my speed is -132.8 KB/sec. My total amount d/l'ed was at 2.2GB before it started going backwards. I'm going to wait for it to get down to -1.5GB to see if that completes the d/l.

Yeesh, use IE if ya can people.

I signed up for FP *sigh*

Just waiting for my key now. Already have the client installed and ready to go.

Edit: Even if I got it within the next few hours, the WoW account creation page is hosed. :(

Yes, and every MMO (with the exception of DAoC) has LOST money every month.

I don't believe that for a second. Do you have anything to back that up? No way would a company keep a game up for 5 years if it was bleeding money. I also seem to recall reading something about how much money SoE was making and it was tons. Also, why would you spend millions of dollars developing a sequel to a game that you didn't make money on? I also remember reading that FFXI started making a profit after it's second year in release in Japan.

Secondly, I would be very suprised if Blizzard uses BT when the final game is launched. They are using it for the beta's so they don't spend too much money while no money is coming in. Plus once the game is live the patches will be much smaller and they most likely will have a direct download for their smaller patches just like they have for all of their other games that were free to play online.

I got the program and have it installed, but I can't sign in now...and the World of Warcraft site is totally down.

I guess Blizzard didn't figure this stress test would be as much for their web site as the game.

Edit: When I click the Signup link provided in the setup program and the WOW front page, I eventually get a DL of a httpd/unixdirectory. What am I supposed to do with it?

I've worked for SOE. Have you? No. Ok. MMORPGs, on their $15 a month fee alone, bleed money. Companies need to do things like $50-$75 character transfers and renames. It's scary how much money that sort of thing can make. SOE does it with EQ and SWG (it's the ONLY money they make with SWG), Mythic does it with DAoC, and you can be sure that other MMO companies will do it as not only does it suppliment the game with much needed money; the fanbase of MMORPGs have come to expect that sort of thing.

Another reason why Mythic is the only profitable MMO company is not only DAoC a success and they make money with renames/transfers, they also don't have to worry about publishing and distrubiting the game. VUG handles all of that. SOE is also the publisher of EQ, etc and that takes money to do. One way around that is digital downloads of expansions, which makes A LOT of money and saves A LOT of money because you don't have to worry about packaging costs and getting it on retail shelves.

Sadly, Mythic can't do digital downloads of DAoC expansions because VUG strictly won't allow such a thing (thanks to the Valve lawsuit they started).

I don't know anything about FFXI's profits or lack thereof as Square is very quiet on hard numbers specific to one territory. However, it wouldn't be surprising since they charge people $1 per additional character in addition to all of the PlayOnline "Plus" fees. Also, Square in the US doesn't have to deal with GMs as the FFXI US GMs are contracted out to SOE and work next to the EQ GMs (and all are former EQ GMs).
