How does it deal with multiple devices and merging? Say you update your iPhone today, your iPad next week and your Mac later on. Does it merge them all smartly without duplicating?
Wouldn't be able to answer that but it restored the oldest messages from my iPhone that weren't on my MacBook and there were no duplicates.

I have to say, the phone runs much better starting from scratch.
All the left over jailbreak data was messing things up.

I just have to figure out a good way to get my 5C backup onto an iOS 11 device to perform the sync. If I really even care that much. I guess I really don't. I just need the messages from a certain person for the future. There's thousands of them spanning 2 years.
Either way I'm looking forward to merging everything I have and having it stay synced if I delete stuff. Can't wait. That and the new Control Center are gonna be amazing.
I don't think there's really any purpose to a bezel-less iPad is there?

AirPlay 2 is more than just multi speaker output. Biggest thing, imo, is enhanced buffering and more responsive playback (latency). Now instead of seconds of buffer, AirPlay 2 will buffer minutes of content. That means even if your source audio loses network connectivity, it'll continue playing. And playback should be more responsive when hitting play/pause/skip/etc. Multi-device control also means you can use more than one device to control playback.

Does anyone know if there's been any official explanation for the removal of the force touch app switcher (from the left edge of the screen)? It's quite a loss if its removal is deliberate and permanent, given how useful it was.
Also, I kinda wish that universal dock on the iPad were on the iPhone too. Makes for some conveniently fluid app switching as well.
I'm also disappointed the notification center now no longer sticks to Page 0 (the widget page) upon opening. It now always defaults to the notification page. Hopefully it'll be restored in a future beta.

The rumor is there will be a new app switch detailed when the new iPhone is shown since the new iPhone has no home button.

Does airplay 2 need new hardware to work?
Hopefully this is true, because I use the 3DTouch gesture to access the app switcher all the time.
ATV4 will get a firmware update. Not sure about third party speakers/receivers or even the AirPort Express (😔

Yeah, looking back it's weird they had Apple Pay for apps and websites but didn't use it for their own stuff.

For as much as I'd hate losing Smart Speed, the tempting thing about moving back would be if I decided to get a HomePod it will only way to play podcasts via Siri. I guess I could just AirPlay from Overcast to the speaker though.
Edit: so I'm going to pick up a 10.5" Pro on Tuesday assuming Apple has stock, and I want to get a keyboard for it. Besides price, what are the advantages or disadvantages of that $130 Logitech one vs the official Apple one?

Right, that is how it works now. However, even though my Apple TV is the one doing the actual streaming from the URL, if I were to turn my phone off or close the app that's doing the airplaying, the Apple TV stops even though it's doing its own streaming. People have said that's how chromecast currently works, once the URL is sent the phone is free to do whatever it once, including watching a totally separate stream than what got sent to the TV
I've never used a chromecast so this is all secondhand
Okay, so if that is how it already works why were we asking for it to hand over the URL? What needs to happen then is that it keeps playing regardless of what you do with the AirPlay client. And yes, that's how Chromecast works right now. You can do whatever you want after starting the cast.

It was a simplification, a shorter way of saying it. You are correct, what they need to do is change how the client works, not the receiver
With iMessage conversations now being synced across devices and backed up in the cloud, does that mean that there is finally not going to be any real harm in fully wiping a phone in ios 11 and signing back into your account? I mean without restoring from a backup. Wouldnt your conversations, photos (if you use iCloud Photo Library), reminders, notes and everything else all be there when you sign in? The only thing i can think of that youd lose is 3rd party app-specific saved data such as game saves. The ESSENTIAL things should now all be free from device-specific backups, no? I feel like that is the biggest news of this upcoming update. I fully intend on continuing to use icloud backups, but I was just thinking about this today.

That is correct. Anything checked green in the iCloud menu plus photos with iCloud Photo Library and now iMessages (and SMS) will come back when you set up as new. Which is awesome! I always set up as new between devices anyway, so this is just another benefit

I've had five or six Apple laptops since they went Intel. I sold my 2013 15" rMBP for a 12" Skylake retina MacBook and it's been fun... but man oh man is it good to be back to a 15". So much faster. Such a better screen. Keyboard and trackpad feel fantastic.

Like... I'm really trying to give it a fair shake, but it's so hard. Let me preface by saying I couldn't care less for a touch screen on my laptop. Period. I have a Surface Pro 4 and I've used the touch screen less than a dozen times. But this feels like such a half-assed stop-gap to appease folks clamoring for a touch screen or the internet sites that always give Windows devices an extra "check" on the Pros list for having a touch-screen.
It's like Apple is saying "look, a touch screen is so unintuitive... we've come up with a better solution." But it add net-nothing to the user experience.
Because there's no tactility, I have to look away from my screen to do anything with it. What's the point? I suppose I could understand it on their entry-level/college kid/consumer devices - makes new tabs easy and it gives word corrections. But on a ~$3K machine, I seriously can't think of one friend or colleague who wants this. And surely, we're losing battery life and adding cost by having it.

Like I said, though - the rest is just sublime. Man, this screen is on a different level. Having used the SP4, the Surface Book, and other high-end machines - they just don't compete. The only screen on a computer I've ever used that matches this is the 5K iMac and 13" Alienware OLED. Everything else is a step behind. Having a quad-core and decent GPU in a frame this skinny is incredible. I'd be fine with a slightly thicker machine; but that doesn't diminish the accomplishment.

Is it possible to actually download a real file into iCloud Drive (eg. a DMG, or MP4, or whatever) from Safari on iPad?
I realise it probably won't be usable on the iPad (if it was a DMG etc.) but at least I could then open it on my Mac.

Yes, Safari acts like a download manager. The blue bar along the top would be the progress bar (sometimes) and after it's done you can "share" it into any app including the Files app
It doesn't properly support them. You have to add your username and password into the actual feed url to get it to work and even then it doesn't work for every premium podcasts if the individual files are password protected rather than just the rss feed. It used to work with Giant Bomb's premium stuff (might still do, haven't checked) but it didn't with a few other sites I use that have passworded podcasts.
I asked the dev about it on Twitter and he said he'd probably never add proper support for it because of the extra effort involved with storing all the extra usernames and passwords.
I use Downcast on iOS and Mac instead because of that. It's not the best, the download times on the iOS app are all over the place and the Mac app straight up refuses to detect recent episodes of a few podcasts so I just stopped using that version.
It's a shame because if Overcast had protected feed support it would be the best podcast app by far.
Not sure if its been mentioned yet, but you can now play videos in-line in safari on iPhone. Previously, 99% of videos would play only in full-screen. Once the video starts playing in full screen, there is now a little full screen button you can tap to pop it back into the page so you can scroll while listening or whatever.
Do they not have the pip video window thing like on iPad?
Sucks man. Android has that shit and I'd think the current 7 would be strong enough
