X-Box Gamertag retrieval question

Can you retrieve your gamertag from Xbox if you cancel your service? Basically, it was cancelled when I sold my old xbox, but now I have a 360 and want to bring it back to life. Am I pretty much screwed?

Yeah, it doesn't work like that...

If your account expired you have a certain window of time to retrieve it, but you can only do so by calling MS. If you cancelled your account, your gamertag is gone... forever! MUHAHAHAH!

Hmmm......Interesting.

So, this means, that someone else can't grab the name?

I thought that once an account is canceled, it leaves a window of opportunity for someoene else to take it?

Damn.

That's very stupid....

I'm a silver member, and starting out with Xbox 360, never bought an xbox before..

What if my Gold status ends after a year, I mean, this year I plan to get gold one year, but after that? That means its gone after that?

Just a fair bit of warning to anyone who already has their 360 and has been playing games. If you retrieve your old gamertag and it is the same gamertag as the one on your 360 it will overwrite your existing profile and you will lose all of your save games and achievements.

If you care about your save games and achievements (and who doesn't?) then you might just want to leave your old account behind and come up with a new gamertag that you want to use on your 360 and Live.

If anyone knows a way to prevent it from deleting anything please post it in this thread. Its too late for me but it may help other people.

That's why you retrieve your old gamertag before starting to play games. I don't see why anyone who had XBL wouldn't do that.

hmm, I upgraded my profile from offline to silver to gold and dont recall losing anything

I don't remember the exact process though

I had an Xbox but I never had Live. I registered on Xbox.com before I got my 360 to view certain things. This essentially reserved my gamertag on Live ahead of time. About a month after I got my 360 I got Live. That's why I had a problem.

Instead of overwriting your existing profile it should merge the two IMO.

it only happens if you recover an existing account, not convert an offline account into a new xbox live account
