Xbox At A Sega-Like Fork In The Road And May Stop Making Consoles, Ex-PlayStation Boss Says

Speaking to GI.biz, Layden said there will certainly be more console generations to come, but Microsoft may not be part of that story. "Watching what Xbox has been doing recently, I do get Dreamcast flashbacks," he said, referencing how Sega got out of the console business after the Dreamcast and became a software company.

"I think Sega realized they just were better off being a software house. I think Microsoft is in that same sort of fork in the road. And I don't think their hardware offering is persuasive enough to make up the ground they've lost," he said

Layden said he hopes to see some kind of standardization for consoles in the future, and it's his belief that going this way could help the total market for console gaming grow.

"Can't we look at the game console business kind of like Blu-ray, or cassette, or compact disc, or any other medium where the industry decided we'll compete on content, but let's standardize on format?" he said. "And then let's take that format and license it out to everybody who wants to support it. That's what stops the penetration rate of console gaming, I think."

I think it's pretty obvious at this point, Microsoft wants out of the gaming hardware business.

Despite about a three year period at the start of the Xbox 360 generation, the entire Xbox experiment has been a complete failure. And that "successful" period was complete obliterated by the RROD fiasco.

It's all speculation. More so, what the industry hopes to happen.

The industry did not start this narrative. "This is an Xbox" did. It is all speculative until Microsoft makes it official but it is hard to ignore the moves they have been making when it comes to the Xbox hardware. Unfortunately, it has to be specified because Xbox doesn't even mean console anymore. 🤷‍♂️

MS is evolving Xbox hardware, not getting rid of it. They're evolving it to an open platform in many form factors built by OEMs mostly. That's how other open platforms work, as in windows and android. They may or may not do first party hardware, like Surface or Pixel but that doesn't stop hardware being produced.

I'd argue the new Xbox strategy is exactly what he says, a standard that will be licensed out. Its just it will be the only open standard... Assuming MS doesn't put onerous limits/licenses on OEM's using Magnus derivatives. Not sure how much of the 'standard' MS 'owns'. Presumably they have some control over the b/c aspect, but may choose to open it up in a sense to encourage takeup.

Well, we know they're going at least one more round in the ring, but I mean, he'll be right eventually up to the heat-death of the Universe.

Anyway, with Sony also moving away from a hardware-centric business model, I think the days of "consoles" are numbered. I think Microsoft and Sony both see it, and Microsoft is taking the steps now to ensure their business will survive when everyone stops buying consoles and we're all just gaming on various iterations and form factors of PCs.

On behalf of all Sega fans, I state for the record that they have NOT been better off as a software house. Obviously, they had no choice, it was either that or go bankrupt (and Sega would have died in 2001 if not for Isao Okawa's personal intervention). But I think we can all agree that Sega was infintely better in the 1990s. Heck, we still get excited for new Dreamcast games--speaking of which, have you seen how Grand Theft Auto 3 & Mario Kart 64 are progressing? Wow!

Good God the AI photos are so fcking cringe. How is that shit even allowed here.

I think there will be one more box but outsourced entirely to someone else so there's minimal investment by them.

Context matters, the situation is nothing like SEGA.
You're right, context does matter. When did I say this was like Sega? When did I say they would not have OEM or any kind of hardware? I have never deviated from my opinion that I think Xbox will have at least one more traditional console and will move on to whatever is next for them after. Even if that is another traditional console. You seem to be sticking to some point that I did not make. 🤷‍♂️
