I think it's pretty obvious at this point, Microsoft wants out of the gaming hardware business.

Despite about a three year period at the start of the Xbox 360 generation, the entire Xbox experiment has been a complete failure. And that "successful" period was complete obliterated by the RROD fiasco.

Honestly the RROD didn't affect them that much. The 360 was still selling like crazy. Their problem was when they went all in on Kinect, then the Xbox One naming and online requirement announcement. Never really recovered from that.
