Xbox - blinking red light

...after watching a DVD, I pop in Brothers in Arms and I get bumped right to a multi-lingual 'Contact Customer Service' message, along with the eject button blinking red.

I've had some DDE's in the past but never a show stopper until now.

I did some sniffing around the internet and read something about overheating. I turned the thing off for about 30 minutes and everything was OK, able to play BiA no problem (although that game in particular seems to make my Xbox emit some strange noises). But I have a feeling this is the end. It's my launch unit with a Thomson drive.

Anyway, I'm just debating if I should pick up a new one since I have a ton of games to play, or just wait for the backwards compatible Xbox 2.

If your Xbox - the first console designed to play Xbox games out of the Xbox - won't play Xbox games, what makes you think the Xbox 2 will play them? :lol

This might sound stupid, but is your Xbox lying horizontally straight? I would get the red light and messege if the xbox was tilted in any direction.

Yeah it's horizontal. Althouggh it's sitting on top of an infrequently used VCR.

Aren't there replacement DVD drive you can buy? I believe the drives are hacked 16x Samsung drive.

Dunno. I'll have to check it out, I have some buddies who might be of some assistance.

FLASHING RED:
Dead, broken or empty eeprom.

ORANGE Flashing:
This may also be down to a solder splash on the board or a damaged track. May also be due overheating.

did the errormessage have a number next to it?

Nope, no numbers. I didn't look closely enough to see if it was red or orange. I just know it wasn't the usual green.

I'm hoping it was just a bit warm since it worked OK after turning it off for a bit.

were there sparks

I was under the impression Xbox couldn't do sparks
