A new tier called "Xbox Game Pass Standard" is launching in September.

  • Soon, Xbox Game Pass for Console will be shuttered for new users only.
  • Users currently on Xbox Game Pass for Console will be allowed to maintain their subscription, as well as day one games, and the hundreds of titles in the back catalogue.
  • New users on Xbox Game Pass in the near future will be greeted by a new Xbox Game Pass "Standard." This is more like EA Access, which includes Xbox's back catalogue, and doesn't include day one games. This will be priced at $14.99 per month, and will also include Xbox Live Gold for multiplayer (now known as Game Pass Core, confusingly). It doesn't include Xbox Cloud gaming. Game Pass Standard is supposedly launching in September.
  • From September 12, 2024, Microsoft will only allow users to stack Xbox Game Pass for Console users for up to 13 months, using pre-paid cards and the like, which will continue to function. If you have more than 13 months stacked already, you won't be impacted.
  • Xbox Game Pass Ultimate will not be changed, but it will get a price increase. It will still include PC Game Pass, day one games, and hundreds of back catalogue titles, as well as cloud gaming. But, it is getting a price increase. The new price will be $19.99 per month.
  • PC Game Pass is also getting a price increase, from $9.99 per month to $11.99.
  • PC Game Pass will also continue to get day one games.
  • Xbox Game Pass Core (Xbox Live Gold multiplayer) gets an annual price increase to $74.99 from $59.99, but it will remain $9.99 per month.
  • The price increases are global. You can view the new prices for your region here.
  • For users with recurring billing, the new prices will take effect on September 12, 2024, giving you time to cancel if you don't fancy it.
  • Microsoft now has a support page up dedicated to these changes over here.

It's only a matter of time before they completely sunset Game Pass for Console and eventually make those people choose between Core, "Standard", or Ultimate. They're not doing it immediately so as to avoid backlash, but it's inevitable.

Late Edit: They're also cracking down on stacking, at least for Game Pass Console people. Can't stack more than 13 months after this change.

The fact that $14.99 a month no longer gets you "day one" tells you everything you need to know.

They fucked it.

Yeah it's over, I guess this increase also reflects currency fluctuation between the USD and... the USD? :messenger_tears_of_joy:

EA Play is the model they're going for now. Lower level is probably 1 year later if I had to guess. Higher level is day 1.

Kinda makes sense to treat Activision like EA but I wish they just did it separately. The CoD and GP AA / indie games audiences dont overlap that much

Is the $74.99 for a year a typo? Doesn't make sense to increase the monthly with that low a yearly price

Honestly I doubt its that cheap. But that would limit people dropping in for a month.

My guess is Gold (GP Core) is $75 and its a typo.

The fact that they have some of the most confusing marketing on Xbox Game Pass is just gold to how stupid the brand is. You can pay for GP and get some rentals, you can pay for it to get some online, or you can pay for it to get both. Why would you call all of that Gamepass?

We all knew price increases were coming but this seems convoluted.
They want to kill the idea of people subbing for one month to play Starfield or Hellblade 2 on release.

Wait.......so PC Game Pass will continue to get day one games, but consoles (standard) will not get day one?

What the hell? They just kicked their console gamers in the nuts.
It almost feels as if they are actively transitioning themselves and their users out of the console thing.
