Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

Big news.
Kinda makes you wonder how many more 'definitive' editions will be released now since they've lost one of their big selling points :P

backwards compatibility is a huge deal to me, I still play PS1 physical discs on PS3 from time to time.

Let me play Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Mass Effect, GTA4, RDR, BL1, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon and Vesperia and that's all I need supported. It's great even if it takes 2 or 3 years to have all of those fully support.

This is so weird. I didn't even know people wanted this and I see some people claiming sales will swing the other way over this feature. Am I a potato? Like I can play old games on my new console cool, I guess?

Someone explain to me how this is a game changer.

Shouldn't it have had this from the start? I get that it's really cool and everything, but I remember the console not being backwards compatible was considered a con before its release.

lmao. I will admit, I had the same attitude too. glad that I was wrong.

how do we know this? the guy on stage said "100 games will work by launch" and "thanks to the power of xbl" i'm not taking sides here, i just don't believe native emulation is possible. I'd be asking the same questions if sony were making the claims too

Because developers need to give permission that's why it will take time

But even disk based games will work. So definitely not streaming.

They announced that you can play old games on a new system, so they won? Come on...

If Sony could "win" E3 2013 by simply going "hey guys, used games and offline play", then yeah, Microsoft may very well have "won" E3 in many people's eyes.

Yeah lol wow you can now play your old games. I want new ones.

You're getting those too. This is for those (like me) who would rather buy and maintain one console (XBO) than two (XBO + 360). It's a big deal, and a great move for the consumer in the age of remasters and overpriced streaming services.

Gaf is not the best place to judge this stuff .
BC can help with sales but how big is the question .
BC has never really been a huge factor in sales. It might help slightly and win a few people sitting on the fence, but I don't see it making a huge difference. Most people buy a new system to play new games, not games they played a generation ago.

I never understood why people are so crazy over BC. Them adding BC to XB1 is awesome but I already have a 360 and I could buy one for like 70 bucks. Its convenient, but I'd rather play new games.

I have dozens of 360 games on an external had already plugged into my 369. I wonder if all I will need to do is attach to the Xbox One and it will work. Thoughts?

This is brilliant news. Microsoft are absolutely nailing software at the moment in general. Wizards over there for real.

Can't wait to read more details about this feature soon. I've still got a lot of retail 360 games on my shelf.

Getting to play XBLA games again would be great. Good Guy MS. A shame the games shown have been CGI, CGI...oh and Halo 5. That looks goooooood.

I was going to hold out on getting my Xbox One until november and try to finish everything.

Now I don't need to. :') I'm so fucking excited.

This is great, even if it doesn't affect sales much it's still a great thing to add.
I think it will, I know a lot of people who hasn't upgraded to PS4/X1 because of no BC, this makes it a easier choice if you own 360 games.

I never bought a 360 due to the failure rates (and online charge).

This is like a free console.

This is excellent, but it's no gamechanger that'll shake up the console race or anything, especially this far in.

I wish Sony would follow suit since I couldn't care less about streaming.

I'm not sure this is huge yet. 360 BC with original Xbox died down so fast
There are some abolutely timeless 6th gen games (WW, Halo 2/CE, RE4, F-Zero GX, Silent Hill 3, etc), but most 7th gen games look great and online functions for currently active 7th gen games extends their longevity. Games from the 7th gen and up will be far more playable into the future than their predecessors due to technical quality and online gaming where applicable (fighting games from 7th gen in particular still get tons of play).

If we were all in the minority, then they'd have had no reason to actually put this feature in. The fact that they did means 1 of 2 things - either A) People have actually asked for it, multiple times, enough for them to try and figure out how to make it work, or 2) they wanted to give this extreme minority you're speaking of hard-ons.

Somehow, I doubt B is the correct answer.

Of course B(2) isn't the right answer, because you put an absolute up against everything that isn't that absolute.

But which is more likely, there are millions of people who would buy an Xbox One the instant this became a reality, or Microsoft figured it's cheap enough to attract the relatively few who care?

Note that this is deliberately putting the absolute on the other end of the spectrum.

Xbox Won

I'm not even exaggerating. Kudos to MS on the bomb dropped. Hopefully future consoles strongly focus on building a software ecosystem like Steam has. I would still get a PS4 for myself, but I'd definitely recommend an Xbone to anyone who asks me for a recommendation.

I don't quite equate being able to play last gen's games with being able to fully and properly enjoy this gen's games.

(Speaking of consoles, PC guys)

BC is a great feature so kudos to MS for going from doing very anti-consumer things to trying to give more consumer friendly features. I'm done with last console gen and play mostly on PC but I like knowing I have the option.

Keep repeating yourself. That will make you correct.

Considering how the PS3 launched with full access to the entire PS2 library and it struggled out of sales gate (for a lot of reasons, obviously), I kind of think he might be right. Backwards compatibility is definitely welcomed, but I don't know if this will move that many more units.

This is a gesture of good will, not a strategy to outsell anyone. But if you wanna believe it's some megaton system seller event then go ahead and put it on the chalkboard.

I didn't say it was a megaton system seller. Dude keeps saying it won't affect sales at all. We heard you, move along now.

I quoted the wrong person earlier. Sorry about that.

If i can play Tales of Vesperia/Lost oddyssey/Blue dragon, i might bite on an xbone (and the rest of my long list of digital games on xbox 360 but those 3 are huge for me) Good job microsoft for bringing BC .

Now that I've been thinking about it for a few minutes, I have to say it doesn't move the needle at all for me in terms of wanting an X1. After all, if there were 360 games I cared about playing, I'd have bought a 360 at some point. All it does is make me a little jealous that PS4 doesn't have it, which ultimately has no implications for my purchase behavior because I already own one.

Nonetheless, the idea that you can get a (partial) 360 and One in the same package has to be enough to push at least some people over the edge. And of course it's great for people who already have an X1 who want to streamline their entertainment centers.
