Xbox One adds Xbox 360 backwards compatibility

Yes, that's right. For example, that's why the PS3 can play any PS1 physical game: you have the disc, the PS3 is just giving you a way to play it

By contrast, that's why some PS1 games on PSN can only be played on PS3/PSP and not the Vita. Just because the ISO exists on Sony's servers, they can't just let users on the new platform (Vita) download the game, they need publisher permission.

Every single one of those games on the list except for Borderlands was published by Microsoft, and of the list only Shadow Complex and Alan Wake aren't owned by them so I could very much believe it.

I hope and expect we will get Fallout 3 and Rainbow 6 Vegas 1/2 so we can test them before they are given away as download codes

I think ME 1 rights are now with EA so I would think MS needed EA's permission to put Mass Effect 1 compatible.

I may be wrong though.

This has worked for me for Hexic HD, Perfect Dark and Mass Effect (all digitally purchased previously)

Awesome I got Super Meat Boy doing it this way, but this has no way of working for disk games does it?
 
Well shit these publishers would be smart to get on board and get these games on the xb1 and then offer up some sales.. I'd buy a ton if these old 360 games if I could play them easily on my xb1. Microsoft would be smart to offer a store for these games and publishers would be smart to put their games on them.

If you check Mass Effect on the Xbox One store (I found it by seeing people who had played it, game hub then view in store), Microsoft Game Studios are still listed as the publisher.

I suspect whatever deal MS and EA thrashed out over exclusivity, PS3 port etc MS kept some sort of rights to the original on Xbox 360, hence why it is there.

No, the game executable itself is not touched. What they are modifying is essentially the 360 OS itself to talk to the hardware.

Remember, when you launch any game on Xbox One, it's actually launching its own OS (very, very slim OS mind you) which launches the game. For the emulator, when you launch a game, you are actually launching a modified 360 OS that knows how to talk to the Xbox One. The game remains untouched since it's oblivious to this and still think its on a 360, and its only the OS which changed around it. That's why you see the 360 boot-up animation when you start one of these games. It's literally starting a software-based Xbox 360.

Doing any sort of port/rewriting/patching like you mentioned would require source code access, and would be the furthest thing from easy to do (and would be so much harder to get third-party buy-off for any of their titles).

Look into the ControllerMAX product. With that product, you can even use 360 controller on PS3, or Wii U Pro controller on Xbox One. It's a really neat product.

Yep. Phil talks about this in the GB interview. Says that they did it the hard way with OG Xbox BC on the 360, and they wanted to aim for maximum compatibility. The easiest way is to make a full 360 run on the Xbox One.

Doesn't surprise me since the rare collection with BC games comes out before BC

Really all you should need is the product id
 
Alright I downloaded the preview program. Now what?

Nvm had to open the message and launch again.

Crap now I need to wait up to 72 hours?

There would still be legal issues due to the differences in the publisher agreements for things like streaming and region locking

Why would it? This is an emulated 360. Not a port of a 360 game to One.

It's not a port. But it is making a copy of the game code.

Wonder why Perfect Dark won't??


When I click perfect dark it says BUNDLE instead of Install (I bought it when it came out on 360). When I click bundle it says that it didn't find anything. Lame.
 
I wonder if MS really went through all 900 games on the Xbox 360 and wrapped them all manually/tested them/etc and have them on a server somewhere waiting on pubs to flip the switch.

So there's no program they're using to rewrap the game that could be installed locally? :/

Just brainstorming ideas that could help get my game rewrapped for the Xbox One

AFAIK, DLC does not work in the current preview version. However, I imagine it will end up working like regular DLC. You'll download it from the marketplace like you did on 360 and it shows up like DLC for the game like any other Xbox One title.

Nah. Likely MS would need to get permission before they could even touch a publisher's game (it's not their game to work with after all). Once they give permission and go through all of the relevant legal shenanigans with licensing, then MS can run it through whatever system they have and get it ready for the marketplace. From the time a publisher gives permission to when it's available should end up being pretty short from what they've said.

Nothing we can do except vote on the UserVoice page and like tweet at the publisher or something asking them to allow their game to release on the One.

When RB4 comes out they'll work for RB4

It doesn't mean they'll work for a 360 BC game. In fact since they flat-out said no peripherals, it probably won't. But hey, maybe they're secretly working on that as well

They said DLC will work in the future. Should be exactly the same as on Xbox 360
 
Playing some Mass Effect right now. I'm still on Eden Prime, but I can see that texture pop-in is definitely improved. I imagine it's even better if you have it installed on an external drive.
 
Played Mass Effect last night, worked fine, although frame rate was low.
Also is it saving screenshots at like 1440x810 or something for everyone else?

Sorry if this has been asked before, but do discs work yet? Tried Kameo and PDZ and they both spat out error messages :( this Xbox 360 game isn't compatible etc
