Xbox One Launch Thread [Thread being archived 1/1/14]

Was wondering about game installs. When I put in Dead Rising 3 tomorrow night, will I have to go to separate menu and choose "full install" like on 360 or will it start installing while I play like PS4?

Also, hope you can dl stuff in the background while on standby. Plan on dl-ing Killer Instinct while I sleep.

PCWorld review - 4/5

The Xbox One smartly integrates TV, streaming video, and games. It has a few kinks to iron out, but it’s already a welcome addition to any living room.

The verdict. A new console may live or die based on its initial games, and here is where the Xbox One trumps the PlayStation 4. Both Ryse and Forza Motorsport are the kind of graphical showcases that should move consoles throughout the holiday season.
Microsoft and Sony are positioning their consoles as multi-purpose entertainment hubs for the living room, and some consumers may make their decision simply based on price. (After all, the PlayStation 4 is $100 less.) But if Microsoft can iron out some performance quirks around voice recognition and Snap, the decision won't be too hard: it's far easier to glimpse the future potential in the Xbox One, starting with 10 seconds of time and the simple two-word voice command: "Xbox on."

About the Kinect IR Blaster on/off thing:

Don't know if anyone mentioned this, but why stick to the Power On button for starting up the TV? The TVs I've used mostly had the feature where they could be turned on with the digits on the remote or Prog+- and Vol+- keys. Why not use that for the 'Xbox On' command? (or give chance of it to the users)
Like raise and lower the volume by 1, or do it with the Programme. TV still gets powered on. It still goes to HDMI after that, doesn't it? For 'Xbox Off' the power button is perfectly okay I believe.

Something I'd like to see would be some user defined macros for the different voice commands.

Did that. Some games show up for me like Ryse. Oh well. I can wait until tomorrow. I did the $10 upgrade.

Well one things that sucks about it is that the Metro app is forcing them into full screen 1080p and they don't look very great as they are 720p videos.

However when you upload them to Skydrive they seem higher quality (4 mbps) and you don't need to worry about it being full screen.

the dpad on my controller snaps into place and makes a loud click when moving from down to left or right. busted or normal? it's pretty annoying, but I don't really use the dpad in any games so I'll live but I'd like to know

also right bumper clicks much louder than left bumper

so in addition to these I noticed the left trigger doesn't work as smoothly as the right trigger and sounds audibly springy if that makes sense. Guessing I got a dud, but we'll see on Friday

To be fair Windows Phone did but Google are being asses.

They don't use springs, you might want to check to see if something got stuck between the bumper and trigger.

I've seen the "Sony and MS are positioning their boxes as entertainment hubs" thing pop up in multiple reviews, the most recent being in that CNN piece linked above.

I don't know. Does it seem like Sony is marketing the PS4 as such? I've found it interesting how the two companies are talking different approaches (Sony = gamer heaven/ MS =all-in-one awesomebox).

Have you completely missed their "TV for Gamers" presentation and now the Music subscription and Video renting service?

I think it's silly to think Sony isn't trying to get entertainment up and working for the PS4.

First tragedy, then farce.
Do we know what games will have demos on day 1?

I didn't buy any games with my pre-order (all digital), but I want to try a bunch of stuff out isntead of buying a bunch of stuff :p

By using smartglass I can see that there are demos for:

  • Forza 5
    Fifa 14
    Kinect Sports Rivals

This is the first time since the PS1 that Sony hasn't tried pushing their machine as anything other than a gaming console. PS2 was a DVD player and PS3 was a Blu-Ray player and media hub. I think MS is offering the best of both worlds, and will ultimately do better because of it. There's enough it brings to the table for any random person to find a use for it while still having everything gamers want. I couldn't care less about the stuff that isn't game-related, but it simply has more announced games I want than the PS4.

Was just at a local Games Store. He got 46 pieces. Even saw them all lying in the storage room. A few are not preordered yet, so if you are Austrian....

I actually did miss that! Of course entertainment is focus of the PS4; I'm just going by what the feel of their marketing has been (i.e., a far cry from the "It only does everything" message of the early days of the PS3)

What's the deal with the Kinect Sports Jet ski game? How much does it cost? Are there reviews for it?

Awesome. Thank you!

Was hoping for Forza demo before I paid $60 for a game I might not enjoy. The only racing game I've played, period, would be Mario Kart (64, Wii). Forza looks good though.

Edit: Although I've spent countless hours racing mongooses (mongeese?) and warthogs, and some of the better racing forge maps on Reach probably give dedicated racing games a run for their money, at least as far as the enjoyment level goes.
