Xbox One Launch Thread [Thread being archived 1/1/14]

A price cut alongside Halo would sell a huge amount of consoles. Any problems theyre having if any would be fixed. I don't think they'll need to mind, Titanfall and Halo should be enough to sustain console sales without a pricecut.

Yup I agree, that 1-2 punch would be huge for One.

I hope you're right but we'll see. They certainly have the software to keep it going.

Honestly though, what are you changing in the grand scheme of things? What is your one little vote doing to Microsoft?

Just buy it and have fun if you're interested in it, and if money's not an issue. Life's too short to be worrying about your one little tick on history. You not buying the Xbox One is insignificant and only impacts you missing great games, but whatever.. your life.

I'm not missing out on it though. Games don't evaporate if you are not DAY ONE :p

You made the Xbox 360 official thread. When I revisited it recently, I was sort of surprised to see that.

Ho shit I did? I forgot about that lol

Edit: haha, shit. My old school Xbox 360 launch thread. Now THAT'S some memories.

Man, see that's exactly what worries me. MS has a good, strong launch but then, everything else seems pretty barren. Titanfall in spring, Halo in late 2014, there's not much else outside of that which is crazy. Any release date on Sunset Overdrive? This is probably the best evidence that launch is far from everything.

Eh? What?!

2014

Project Spark
Garden Warfare
Kinect Sports Rivals
Titanfall
Sunset Overdrive
Quantum Break
Fable Legends
Halo 5

And possibly Black Tusk (probably 2015)

Plus stuff they obviously haven't announced yet.

I'm guessing he has some other good games he can play in the meantime.

Interesting fact: I made that 360 launch thread while I was still on 56.6k modem. I cannot believe how in-depth it is. I've lost some of my skills lol

False. You can leave the kinect in the box an never have to use it.

The system was designed, first and foremost, to be used directly with the kinect. Controller support seems like a backup plan. It makes so much more sense to just use the kinect to navigate through the OS that MS has made for the system than to use a controller, but hey opionions, ya know?

Like I said. The Kinect is a key piece to how MS designed the way the OS/UI is to be used and controlled. It isn't going anywhere for awhile, if at all. Even more so after the announcement that Apple has the company that is responsible for the first Kinect. This could mean big things for the Kinect and Microsofts vision for it.

yes, i suspect at least two years. But that's fine, I waited that long to get a PS3, and this time Microsoft is in the same foot Sony was for me last gen. Lessons must be learned.

Anyway, moving on since no reason to discuss my purchase habits if I ain't getting one at launch, there's so many games I can't wait to play when I do get one. So it'll be like a gaming avalanche of goodness.

While I think your kinectless sku is a pipe dream at this point I have to agree with you on the gaming buffet that comes along with a midlife console purchase. For me I'll have that with PS4.

Sorry if this has been mentioned, but has anyone else seen One controllers in stores? I couldn't find any online and most retailers were saying it would be available on the 22nd, but when I went into Best Buy today they had just fully stocked their shelves. Only one had been purchased so far.

I would've picked it up if I knew I could get drivers for it, but I decided to wait for some impressions before grabbing it.

You see that's what I'm worried about. Where are the unannounced titles going to come from without a big 1st party development set-up in place? The 360's 3rd party exclusives just dried up after the first couple of years.

It's a key piece of the system no doubt, but honestly I've been navigating UIs with buttons for many, many years, I think I could continue to stomach it just fine.

Saving this page for the future guaranteed thread. The system already requires Kinect for nothing thanks to the 180s, so if Microsoft lags behind the competition, they will do the smart business decision. They don't care how many gamers wish it otherwise :D

looks like I'll be saving your post instead for the same reasons...
you gotta be realistic here and understand this:
no matter how many dollars ms could skim from the price by not bundling kinect,
ALWAYS there will be the much bigger enticement kinect use for advertising purposes, for all sides of the spectrum.
so, I say that they will prefer to take a 50$ hit (IF they ever need to), than letting their nextgen advertisement scheme go to waste.

so you think about that ;)

personally, I hate kinect with a passion, but being able to just keep it disconnected unless I want differently is good enough for me. should be for you too.

and by the way, 3 years down the road, where the xbone will have reached maybe the pricepoint you aim for, for sure it will look much less of a nextgen device than it looks now..
like the 360, the best period of the machine will be 0-3yrs, exactly the period you are planning to skip.. :)

I'm not worried at all. You know how many ips MS owns? Rare is a big studio that can work on multiple projects. They opened up more studios in fact like Black Tusk and Osaka studio. Phil Spencer hinted at more older titles coming back. There have been hints for PGR and Crackdown making a return.

Ruffian
MS Victoria
MS Osaka (along with other Japanese buyouts) Platinum anyone?
MS Redmond
Lionhead have a new IP in the works
Rare are working on other stuff and have more than one team
Good Science and Big Park if you're into Kinect stuff

Plus unforseen 2nd party partnerships, which MS does very well and come out of the blue. Look at Insomnia, Double Helix ect.

Removing Kinect from the box basically leaves them with a box that's similarly priced to a significantly more powerful box. I don't think that's in their best interest. They'll drop the price and keep it included for as long as they can afford to. All the videos they've shown so far seems to back up Albert's claim that "you gotta use it to appreciate it", but I'll wait until I hear more about that from you guys. My PS4 is a great games box so far, but as an "everything" box, it's pretty awful. Xbox One looks to be the answer. Multimedia options are a big factor for me. 360 spoiled me.

Their communities do. But again, do what you want lol. Just seems like a silly reason to not buy something you could potentially love because you think your one little vote makes any difference..

The expectation is that I would not be the only one voting that way, much like the mass of people who didn't jump on the PS3 immediately and forced Sony to change. But, again, that's just my perspective. Putting aside gaming for a moment, I think it's really sad for any subject when people believe their own vote doesn't matter. If everyone has that attitude, then it really doesn't matter. Fortunately, we have plenty of examples where this is not the case :)

I have to agree with you on the gaming buffet that comes along with a midlife console purchase. For me I'll have that with PS4.

I got a PS3 a few months before Uncharted 2 came out. Honestly, though, I wasn't too impressed with the avalanche there. I played U1 and was pretty meh on it, Resistance, Folklore and was like 'eh' and was close to regretting my purchase.

AND THEN CAME DEMON SOUL'S. :D

I think it's equal,i don't think it's first for either. It's just another option to navigate. I will use the controller of course.

Man. Really, REALLY tempting to hand off my Vita to Gamestop today. But then I'm conflicted because I'll probably be getting a PS4 down the line...will I actually use remote play or will it just be a "oh cool" feature and never actually use it!?

DECISIONS. FUCK.

If you plan on getting a PS4, you probably shouldn't get rid of your Vita. It's the only reason I have mine still.

Honestly, you will probably regret it once you get your PS4 and feel like you need to buy one again. Just saying.

Have you seen the Fighter Within video?

It looks fun.

I would love a fighting game where you just pull off the finishing/ending moves with Kinect gestures, but play most of the game with the controller. When your power-up bar is full you can also use Kinect to enable a special attack.

I think it would be fun to see something like a Mortal Kombat game where you can execute Fatalities with Kinect gestures.

Playing the whole game with Kinect is probably too tiring for most people and limiting in the actual aerobatics required in most fighting games. A Kinect boxing game that is slower paced and more grounded in the reality of what regular people can actually do might be nice. Although something like Xbox Fitness for teaching you karate could be really cool as well.

I never knew LocoCycle existed until today, and now I don't know what to do with myself. It's not the only thing making this upcoming console decision harder than I originally thought it was going to be.

Isn't there an option for auto downloads now, sure that stops that from happening?
Sure it's in the options somewhere.

Settings.
Console Settings.
Auto-Downloads (automatically updates games and apps without requiring you to confirm)

It still disconnects you in order to update. The only thing that it does is not ask you if you want to update.

Yeah, think I'll probably hold onto it.

Has there been any word on supply? With PS4 you could tell about a week out that they were gonna have extra stock but I don't wanna get that call from gamestop that they won't be able to meet all pre-orders for xbox.

Eh? What?!

Project Spark
Garden Warfare
Kinect Sports Rivals
Titanfall
Sunset Overdrive

Project Spark I'll likely get on PC or the 360, I'm pretty garden warfare is timed, no? Who knows. Kinect Sports Rivals looks good but not for me.

The other games are good though, but Titanfall is PC for me. Are the last 4 all confirmed for 2014? Is there any timeframe (haven't been keeping up with them). Also, on Fable Legends, the last two fable games have been pretty lackluster and I hear this one is some kind of multiplayer, or co-op type game? Is it going to be like traditional fable or something totally different? Still, 4 games in a year. I've got my X1 still on pre-order at the moment, so I should have till Wednesday to make a final decision.

No, updates are handled differently on the One. It will wait and automatically download updates when the console is in standby mode. It won't disconnect you unless the update is marked as a critical update.

That's my understanding of it at this point, but I could have sworn they demoed what I stated before. I think it was during the E3 stage show, actually. Playing Ryse and switching into Killer Instinct.

either smoke and mirrors or it wasn't quite as instant as you think. those games can't both be in memory at the same time (which is what would be necessary to instantly switch between them). if KI takes 30 seconds to load, that's how long it would take to switch.

Now, if the game/app uses the other 3GB (or whatever), you can instantly switch between that and Ryse, for example.

I tend to buy my Xbox hardware with Halo, and I'll probably do the same again this time round. The only problem is, I'm not sure how well the XBO will lend itself to special edition consoles :(.

My Halo Reach 360 was sexy as hell, I hope they can do something like that.

There are a couple of examples out there

They also mentioned that they designed it with customisation in mind
