Xbox One new marketing, a Kinectless version and a game for 400? CBOAT: Maybe

I don't believe they'll give up Kinect. I think they're just going to suck up losing 100 bucks. It's MS. They have the money. They should of done that from the get go.

With investors hounding them to sell off the Xbox division, I doubt that's going to happen.

Don't worry.

New Misterx update says Xbox One will double the ESRAM soon, and by April, all Xbox One games will be 1080p.

This is what happens when you misread your consumer and say "fuck it, we know better".
This is what happens when you think you're the King of the world being tied in sales with the PS3 worldwide. At least Sony got some reasons being arrogant after the PS2 era.

Unbe-fucking-lievable.

I think a $100 price drop before the Fall is definitely coming. Maybe even a new SKU at $400. I don't think they'll drop kinect though.

Yes, this is what happens when you think you're the King of the world being tied in sales with the PS3 worldwide. At least Sony got some reasons being arrogant after the PS2 era.

Unbe-fucking-lievable.

Really? MS and the 360 thought they were King of the World? You don't think that MS had any reason to be arrogant smacking down the PS3 in the USA? That's pretty impressive what they did here... taking down the King like that.

Not even close to the same. I'm not coming in the house and then grabbing a head set to make commands to turn on my everything. I walk in the room home from work and say Xbox On... EVERYTHING turns on. My TV, receiver and Direct TV all turn on. Having to put a head set on imo is not the same as just walking into a room and just start saying commands. It's an awesome feature if you have your whole home entertainment system hooked up to it.
I have this idea, be sure to sit down for it it's going to blow your mind.

You put a microphone or a microphone array (Microsoft is rich, they can afford that right?) in the console housing.

OH MY GOD I JUST SOLVED VOICE COMMANDS WITHOUT USING A CAMERA. PATENT PENDING.

Sure they can. Over and over again, console histories show specs don't win sales.
You're correct however there are three fundamental differences this time around.

A) In those instances of weaker console industry dominance (PS2 and Wii being the most noteworthy examples), the weaker system was typically more affordable than the technologically superior systems that had better performance. A Kinectless Xbox One wouldn't be more affordable. It would just be the same price.

B) Those systems also had the benefit of numerous noteworthy exclusives to drive sales volume. A Kinectless Xbox One will have TitanFall and Microsoft's proven franchises but there are a lot of question marks surrounding the viability of most of those. Halo 4 was a disappointment and Bungie is now making games for the competition. TitanFall is an unknown quantity - is there a big enough multiplayer market to make COD/Battlefield players put down their guns and try something new? Do they even want to? Gears has a new developer and is coming off its own disappointing installment. Forza isn't moving units. Only the continued COD exclusive map pack gambit appears to be maintaining some success and that exclusivity window isn't nearly as large as it once was.

C) We live in a far different era of social networking and media than we did in prior gens. It doesn't matter what the Metacritic averages say or what paid reviewers tout. Anyone that wants to can find out that the PS4 will offer the superior version of a game in a matter of minutes. There are no question marks. There's no grey area. There's no subjectivity. It's a concrete fact. And anyone that isn't doing that research likely has a friend on Twitter that is.

I wonder if Sony would react. If MS cuts to $399, and Sony goes to $350, they'll be back to square one.

Exactly. And regardless, Sony should push out a price drop to further solidify their position. As for this rumor, I can see MS dropping the price but cant see them dropping kinect, its the only standout unique thing about the Xbone.

Why is it so hard to understand they could put a mic in the console itself?

Nope. Voice controls are easier and convenient without having to rely on a headset.

Again, put the mic in the console.

There was no standout unique thing about the 360. They just need to be competitive. Which currently, they are not.

I actually like Kinect so dropping it for a lower price of €400 still wouldn't make me buy one. The Playstations price is just to competitive and I wouldn't want to buy a weaker system for the same price.
€400 with Kinect would be more interesting for me but that would probably loose them to much money.

It is a very difficult decision for Microsoft. They botched their hardware design (or rather Sony hit the jackpot) and dropping Kinect will make the XB1 just a weaker Playstation at a similar price point. But right now, there also isn't anything making Kinect worthwhile.

I hope they don't give up on Kinect. Price drop? Sure. But I like it as a differentiator and think it adds some nice pop to the experience.

What they need to do is give us compelling software and services that utilize it well.

(For starters, breathing a word about the coolness of Xbox Fitness wouldn't be the worst idea in the world.)

They need to show the value of the Kinect (outside of voice commands) to bring back the confidence in their consumers.

Sony destroyed themselves. Microsoft was just in the right place at the right time.

Of course, the way you respond admits that MS was arrogant.

Are you saying you can just put a mic into a device and not include a stereo time of flight camera?

This is the engineering break through we've been waiting for since transparent toasters.

I don't think Sony can afford that.

Who knows. They said the PS4 was made with aggressive price cuts in mind. If the X1 starts gaining on them (or outselling them) in NA, I could see Sony going for it. Though at $399, I think the X1 would at least keep up with the PS4, it probably wouldn't outsell it.

Sony's console is afaik cheaper than MS, and they should be the time such a price drop is on the table have an even cheaper console manufacture costs-wise.

Yeah but not significantly cheaper, not enough to price it at 350.

It's just not worth it, Sony wants to make money too. Even if XB started outselling them in the US, it probably wouldn't be significant and even if it was, they still have the west of the world.

They should just be like fuck it and go $400 with Kinect. Don't know how much of a difference it would make to WW sales though. Sony still has much stronger hardware and they won't have to drop their price to match MS.

Nope. Voice controls are easier and convenient without having to rely on a headset.

easier how? if you're really suggesting they should keep the Kinect crap because people dont want to wear a headset I don't even know what to say

good luck with that

I don't think Sony can afford that.

I don't think they'd need to. Personally.

Waiting until May (see what happens post Titanfall's expected spike) makes the most sense.

You just have to look at how little gaming focus Kinect has gotten (even from first party) to know that the 'bundle it so that people support it' idea fell completely flat on it's face. They've done next to nothing to justify it being in the package. That's entirely on them.

At price parity, the PS4 will still be the more powerful system that multiplatform games play better on. It will still have a higher user base. The 'friend effect' will still favour it.

$400 is just a tourniquet on the limb. It might save the patient. But it's not going to save the limb.

You put your money where your mouth is as a zune purchaser =P
Haha, I actually don't have an Xbone! Initially I refused due to the anti-consumer DRM and then the price difference was enough to make me go PS4. Very happy with my choice. Will definitely get a Bone some day especially if/when the price drops.

I think a $100 price drop before the Fall is definitely coming. Maybe even a new SKU at $400. I don't think they'll drop kinect though.

I also hope they don't drop it. Regardless of what anyone may think of Kinect, a price drop to $400 leads to an exclusives and power comparison; the first is a matter of opinion and the latter being a clear victory for Sony. If the Kinect is still there, at least MS can say, "Hey, we might not have the power, but at least we can provide you with something unique." I think that could be a strong argument.

If we're talking a Kinect-less model for $400... Well, it's not exactly compelling. I think I'd probably have to wait for $300.

They can afford that. And their R&D department are most definitely thinking of ways to get parts cheaper

I doubt and yeah, of course they are. They are already selling PS4 at a loss right now, but it's profitable with a game or 12 month PS+ subscription so it's cool, I don't think they want to take a bigger loss than that. Sales are important but you have to make money too, something which is not happening at 350.

And the Xbox division is already losing lots of money, I can only imagine how hard the investors are raging these past few days.

Glad to see cboat is all right, he brings the salt and truth so he's always welcome.

I don't think console specs have such an effect on people. and I think the price has a much bigger one. Sony losing so much money right now, I doubt they will cut the price until next year. My guess if Microsoft drops it to 400$ with kinect, or remove kinect and bundle it with a game, making it the same price as the PS4 but with extras.

People are buying the PS4 because it is cheaper, just as people were buying the 360 because it was cheaper. The power difference isn't what is making people change sides.

And the Xbox division is already losing lots of money, I can only imagine how hard the investors are raging right these past few days.

This is not true, they've been making money for sometime now. But the lost alot during initial Xbox /360 days

Needs to be done if Microsoft wants to compete long term.

Game bundle may not be necessary (yet) but a kinect-less version definitely is.

I'm not a fan of multiple SKU's and this could hurt Microsoft long term strategy but it needs to be done. People just aren't interested in kinect based features (yet) and Microsoft should give people the option to care about it or not.

If this is true then I feel bad for the gamers who wanted to support MS by buying at launch and didn't want the Kinect. Not even a year later and they are planning on pulling the Kinect (if rumors are true), when they said the have no plans on doing so.. That's kind of a slap to their true fan base if anything.

All I know is I'm not even considering getting an X1 until the price is well under $300. I stopped using 360 once most of the stuff I was interested in stopped being exclusive to 360, and I don't really feel like doing the multi-platform thing any more.

Well, price drops and new SKUs are all really exciting, but isn't the primary purpose of a console pushing quality content? I mean, even with the disadvantages it has, the Xbox One could still do well with some quality exclusives. Titanfall is looking fantastic. 343 pulls off something special, Black Tusk does something fresh with Gears, a bunch of new IPs, that exclusive programming Microsoft has been talking about so much...things could come together for them.

Not saying the multiplatform disparity isn't a problem, but content pushes hardware, and Microsoft should concentrate on that right now instead of changing up their strategy too much. Even the original Xbox was more powerful than the PS2, if I'm not mistaken, but the latter dominated because of the sheer amount of quality content.

A price drop would be nice, but that isn't going to help them much if all they've got are inferior ports of CoD and Assassin's Creed.

Selling more hardware at profit by pushing quality content > selling more hardware by taking a loss. It's a business after all.
