I figure theres a PS2 thread like this so why not do one for Xbox.

To the best of my knowledge both halo shots are captured by Gamespot .
Halo 1
halo_screen003.jpg

Halo 2

DOA on the other hand , I grabbed 2 of the hi res promo shots to compare.
Dead or alive 3

DOA2 Ultimate

Feel free to add to this but I think my point is allready proven , Xbox games just haven't improved much just with screenshots. I'll make a single reply to this with splinter cell to chaos theory.

Ah heck, I'll compare 2 other series -
Splinter Cell

Splinter Cell Chaos Theory

Project Gotham Racing 1

Rather then post the sequel, I'll fast forward to Forza motersports, the newest racing title

Finally , lets compare moto gp 1

To moto gp 3

Why is almost every comparision

TV Cap - > Framebuffer?

aww.. nevermind
Have fun guys

It's not just Xbox. PS2 launch titles still hold up well even now.

Last gen was different because developers were getting to grips with how to make 3D games.

Yeah, most of the older screens just look that bad because they weren't captured as well as the newer stuff. There are certainly some instances where Halo 1 looks more polished than 2, and where it's worse is definitely not because it's fuzzier.

The only interesting improvement is between the DOA's, too bad the screens aren't of more similar scenes, though.

Hah. Interesting thread.

How about a comparison of Splinter Cell with Chaos Theory? I don't consider Pandora Tomorrow to be a real sequel - it's more of a pet project where Ubisoft's Shanghai studio was allowed to play with Montreal's hand-me-downs. Chaos Theory is the 'real' sequel as far as I'm concerned.

How about comparing Munch against Stranger's Wrath?

Mace Griffin against The Chronicles of Riddick?

Blinx and Blinx 2 (and Voodoo Vince)?

Azurik against Sudeki?

MotoGP 1 and 2?

TOCA Touring Cars 1 and 2?

Compared to current gen PS2 games, genius.

Don't worry, that doesn't say that PS2 games can hold a candle to Xbox games. Rather that PS2 games haven't improved either, so you can relax now.

See I just figured since there was a PS2 thread I'd make on for Xbox as well just to see for myself and share with you all.

Frame buffer grabs still work well enough , DOA 3 and DOA2 ultimates pics are both frame buffer grabs, and the difference in still shots really isn't that big, in motion however lots of new details come up.

The best part of xbox graphics is improvement or not, 1st gen xbox games look better then even the newest PS2 titles. So for graphics whores out there , if you bought an xbox you made the right choice.

Surprised noone showed this one yet:

Unreal Championship

Unreal Championship 2

And one more:

Jedi Knight 2

Republic Commando

Yep, without doubt the Xbox has done nothing but soar.

But proving this with a series of shots that are screen grabs, renders, artwork and staged grabs is lunacy.

I'm gonna say it. Panzer Dragon Orta looks like bad CG made for a B-Movie.

I think i speak for everyone who has played PDO: you have got shit in your eyes.

PDO not only has the best graphics i have ever seen on any platform, but its art is light years beyond any MGS or RE.

PDO is a jaggy shimmering mess. Not only that, the game seems as if it's running at 16-bit color at times (dithering graininess). Artistically it is wonderfully, but just on a technical scale it doesn't seem like it's really pushing the xbox.

Some of you guys are really good at comparing captured screenshots to developer-provided cinematic shots that don't really exist. Keep up the good work!

I agree. The best looking games from Xbox launch havent really improved all that much.

Which is which? They all could be from the same game, imo. Both looks basically just as good.

:lol

I sometimes wonder if people actually play the same game i do. If you were talking about the saturn version i would agree.

If its OK for the psyborgs, it ok for the xbots. Now piss off and stop trolling.

I really haven't noticed a big jump in graphics from first gen to current gen Xbox games. There have been some improvements, but maybe that just speaks for how easy it was for developers to make use of the system's graphical capabilities right off the bat. I mean games like DoA3, PDO, Enclave, RSC etc looked and still look amazing. And I'm sorry, but having owned and played both Halo and Halo 2, I was not thrilled with the graphical 'improvements'. Seemed more like an updated version of the original Halo engine than anything else. Then again, I was hoping for the real-time lighting that Bungie had originally promised. And don't get me started on Project E, er I mean Fable....shit I think I'm gonna cry.

how does this thread not have a single picture of doom 3, riddick or ninja gaiden?

Because the people who remembered those titles, like yourself, didn't post any screens of them.

and rsc2 looks quite a bit better then the first IMO. better textures, better car models, and waayyyyy more packed environments. obviously rsc1 still looks incredible though. its easily the second best looking xbox racer behind the sequel ;)

Absolutely correct.

But it`s true games havent really improved all that much since launch. The European one atleast. DOA3, JSRF, RSC and Halo were all launchtitles. They still look better than most xbox games today.

Yeah, that second splinter cell pic is definitely not running on Xbox hardware.

Damn, look at those open areas they cut out in Fable. I hope a sequel is in works for Xbox2.

Someone find me a screenshot of splinter cell, the original that's a frame buffer grab, and I'll post it instead. Posting screen caps doesn't work so well becuase often they look worse then they do on an actual TV, no matter how good the capturing software.

Likewise, using frame buffers as I have above gives you an image not possible on a television but they are crisp pictures that show off textures and such, so it's easier to see a difference if one is there.

As for the chaps asking about PDO and Ninja gaiden, both beautiful games , neither of which have anything to compare with from 1 year to the next. There isn't another devil may cry/ninja gaiden style of game that was released for xbox, especially not one that's older then NG. PDO has nothing like it to compare either.

I disagree with that although I admit that I missed the point of the thread. :P Anyway just appreciate the XBOX's power. :)

You must be blind. it one of the best looking games this gen. And there are no jaggy and shimmering in the game!!

the biggest change in xbox games has been the use of normal mapping.

notice the high increase in lighting quality.

the same can be said for halo/halo 2. To me Halo 2 looks quite a bit better graphically, along with a much smoother framerate.
