XboxEvent.com just registered by the same company that did Xbox's E3 presentations

Sorry I think I wrote that wrong. I guess I was asking why that change would somehow impact the creation of the game?

Disney would still need to market the game and distribute it. Maybe they don't think it is worth it. We should hear more come E3.

Our new pope?

I don't know, guys. I think your ideas make more sense (to launch it later) but I think Microsoft is going all-out with this one. This could be bigger than Kinect for them, and could be the reason people choose the Xbox over the Playstation, again.

It would definitely be a big feature to differentiate themselves. But they can still unveil it and announce a later release, it would still create a lot of buzz and customers would be waiting for it. Exactly like they did with Natal/Kinect. Or like Sony is probably doing with Gaikai.

Microsoft to acquire Christianity?

You and Karak are probably right. It's really more of wishful thinking I guess. One of the only disappointing things about the PS4 conference for me was that the features seemed to be more theory than actual, tangible things. I know if this thing is planned, MS will at least demo them to show they're real.

Wait, this is the first I've heard about the VR/AR Fortaleza concept. If MS can bring something like Google Glasses AR to the console gaming platform could be really huge news. Imagine the entire HUD for a game within the AR glasses, comm channels and all sorts of other nifty shit. I also wonder if this has anything to do with the triple display pane patents that MS has on file? We all thought about HD huds etc.. but what if its for rendering layers into Fortaleza?

Fuuuck. Wonder if Microsoft Research is actually going to bring it.

Looks like a knee-jerk reaction to Sony's event.

No they had an announcement to be released before Sony. Sony said "we wait for the competition to go first" then they pushed the date back and Sony said after "we go first, we're so proud".

This generation is the first one that I skip a home console because it is too similar to one I already own. If the PS4 and the Nextbox offer different experiences for real, I'll probably own them both and be happy about it.

Exactly, like this gen which was just 3rd party port machines with nothing really different between them.

If MS bundles kinect with every machine than they can mandate support for it in more games and will eventually lead to more unique experiences. Even in 3rd party games. ppl rubbish it straight away but we don't know if kinect 2 is a vast improvement or not.

Some other interesting features that the other doesn't offer would be necessary too.

It was in that leaked presentation a while back. The presentation pretty much leaked Microsoft's entire plan for the new Xbox up to 2015.

MS has their chance to be the next big thing with this VR stuff. Kinect is obviously a foundation.

Illumiroom could be a stepping stone, but I'm fairly confident MS will have its own Rift down the line if not at launch. I've speculated as such for awhile now, as it seems they are breaking the mold of just 'better graphics'. If MS misses the boat on this one WOW.

It was talked about in the supposed leaked info powerpoint last June.

Fortaleza: Connected glasses

In 2014, Microsoft will augment the next Xbox with a glasses accessory that’s codenamed “Fortaleza.” (Fortaleza is a city in Brazil near Natal; Natal was the codename of the original Kinect.) This peripheral will provide a “breakthrough heads-up and hands-free device experience,” and will ship first in a Wi-Fi only version. In 2015, a version supporting mobile broadband (4G) will appear as well. This latter version could work with mobile devices (slates, smart phones), if the small accompanying graphic is accurate.

Is that thread worthy? Or no, because its old news? Because those leaks seem fairly real and worth discussing here on GAF and its the first I've heard of it. Whats the protocol? Bump the old thread or create a new?

2d->3d->online gaming->HD gaming/motion control->VR gaming?

This industry is in need of some new innovation in terms of how we play games.

Dude. seriously...you do great things. Keeping an eye out for your posts from now on.

In other news, I'm excited to hear what MS is bringing, but late April is a LONG time away. Hopefully the Xbox Live super sale or whatever keeps me happy till then.

Ya I mean aside from a small change it is what is occuring.

As for the VR. I just don't see it being packed in.

I wouldn't make a new thread because Xbox Jesus will probably see some backlash big time on Gaf. Gaf has been very hostile lately.

Yeah the specs are totally off from what is rumored. But the core aim of the presentation seems to be followed through with.

Nah just keep it in this thread.

Can't see that being good for glasses wearers. Judging from fighting game tournaments I go to there's a lot of them.

Batteries (in general) suck too.

It would seriously cool if we could navigate the UI by simply looking and talking.

head tracking / moving head / talking - hand free extra data input. Dragons Dogma 720 exclusive spell summons whilst putting an enemy in a block string.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one thinking of that. I wear glasses when I play games and use computers/tablets to help reduce eye strain.

Wow, I had no idea Microsoft were actively working on VR glasses. I assume Sony are too?

There I was thinking Oculus was the only VR game in town, how wrong I was.

Maybe I'm missing something, but has VR technology actually been proven yet?

Is the general opinion of the Occulus Rift that it's fantastic?

Ya Sony are to. I think both companies know that some type of VR will hit it big. OR it will be the 3d bomb:)

Personally I am more interested in something like Illumaroom + Kinect then VR + Kinect for various latency and pure comfort reasons.

To be at the forefront of this tech the proof will be the one who pulls it off first. Others will be late to the game and burned. MS knows this feeling quite well in recent years. If they miss this boat they're just plain retarded as a company anymore.

The Rift is the first one which has gotten the interest of a lot of people at the very least. It hits a lot of the right notes (wide FOV screens, gyro sensors built into the headset, fairly light weight), but it still has a lot to prove. It's biggest problems in the dev units coming out this year are the resolution and the latency. If you turn your head to the left, and the screen is delayed by a couple of milliseconds, it could be nauseating if you play the Rift for extended periods of time.

Though, Occulus has said those are both things that it wants to improve upon for the actual consumer release in 2014 (the Rift that's coming out this year is developer focused).

People want the Rift more than they want Kinect or IllumiRoom, at least here on GAF.

That is where a BIG dividing line will be. Glasses based tech has far more issues to overcome and as a hardware for hard core its great. But I don't see it taking off very easily compared to other VR techs.

Pretty cool

Oculus has been very well received. I was taken aback by how positive the response was. It was near unanimous. It's not perfect by any means yet, there are some issues, but those are being worked and will hopefully be ironed out before retail units are ready.

I suspected Sony would be working on it. Puts their PS EYE in a different light too, perhaps they are thinking ahead to when their VR will be ready and will utilise EYE somehow.

I'm still not sure on Illumiroom. It's an interesting concept, but I'd need to see it in person to get a good idea of how well it works.

Pretty cool

Yep that kind thing is what I mean.

For example trying on armor for your characters and using VR glasses to see it on you(Glasses), or walking into a store and seeing different armor and weapons on the walls(Illumaroom). That kind of stuff is all manner of awesome.

It is probably just me but I see it as far more true and worth the small changes to your home compared to glasses which might require changes to my face(glasses) and so forth. Playing a soccer game and seeing the arena around you and fans cheering. Especially if the Display Planes, using the Kinect could make sure that what you were looking at was high def and what is on your side vision was not. Sparks flying by in a racing game as I get to close to another car.
Hot shit.

I admit I am also a social gamer. Huge get togethers at my place and parties and so forth even when playing something like Skyrim. So group involvement and their being able to see what I see is VERY high on my priority list.

AR and VR are two rather different things with very different requirements in some regards. Oculus Rift is VR, Fortaleza seems to be AR.

To explain it in simple terms, VR puts you inside the virtual experience, be it a game or whatever, while AR brings the virtual experience out and blends it with your real-life environment.

Could this work for a survival horror game?

I like the concept and the examples are great and would probably convince me, but I'd need to experience it in person. I remember being excited for something similar on PC some time ago, but nothing really came of it.

Interesting. would the glasses mentioned in the slide be useful in AR? I know precious little about this, the most I know is what I've picked up from the impressions for Oculus. I didn't really consider AR when talking about this.

Well it could work for literally anything that comes down to the devs. one nice thing is I feel that the consoles have a better overall platform to push something like this with no worries about drivers, different specs, and all that jazz. It will really be up to timing.

As someone who has a 170 inch projector screen I still want AR/VR/Illumaroom. A flat anything just isn't the same.

Agreed
