XCOM: Enemy Unknown |OT| Neo GAF is Under Alien Control

I want to cry everytime I get mind controlled.

I don't even know how you guys get in trouble with mind controlling aliens.

Unlike OG X-Com, XCOM's sectoid commanders need to be at shooting distance in order to control your soldiers (or it seems). As soon as I see their shiny noggins, I point all the artillery towards them. I only got mind controlled once, and in the next turn I zapped the bastard right away with the arc thrower.

The problem is when you run into a pack of them. One isn't that bad, two is manageable, but three or more can be tough. Of course, when you get psionics of your own, it becomes less of an issue as Psi Inspiration can boost everyone's Will by quite a bit. But when a psionic alien gets a turn, it's always a danger.

If you have enough HP to spare, just stand out in the open. The sectoid commanders will opt to shoot you with their pea shooter instead of MC you.

That works? That's awesome.

"Oh no. I have accidentally walked out into the open wearing my Titan Armor. I sure hope no powerful aliens will try to shoot me with their weak plasma pistol. That would be terrible."

if you think you might get mind controlled, switch to your pistol before the end of the turn. Friendlies with pistols aren't too much to worry about.

What kind of DLC do you think will come out for this game? Have they said anything about expansion packs or anything? I would love an expansion that let me try to take over the world as aliens! :)

Co-Op. The only thing i want: Co-Op.

Meh. Best way to lose friends would be co-op.

I can just see it now....

"WHY DID YOU MOVE MY MAJOR OVER TO THE LEFT LIKE THAT! NOW ALL THOSE DAMN MUTONS GET A FREE MOVE TO FLANK US! I HATE YOU, WE AREN'T FRIENDS ANYMORE!"

Still would be fun though

I don't see what co-op adds to a TBS game, at least not one with as low a unit count and tiny maps like this one. There is a reason tactical teams aren't a democracy. :p

I've never really had an issue with getting mind controlled. Very rarely (I think once on my Classic playthrough on the very last mission) has the mind controller lived long enough to actually use my guy against me. Any other time I end up killing the controller with the rest of my group first.

"I swear, my rocket launcher misfired, it's not like I wanted to kill 3 of your guys standing next to a car, honest!"

I really don't think playing a turn based strategy game with other people would be a lot of fun.
XCOM co op is what i like to think a true 'social game', communication and trust is key.
Plus the always amusing: "98% chance to hit.... MISSED!' would be quite fun.

If not CoOp then Mod support. Which i guess will be released after the DLC.

How many civilians out of 17 can i save without the council busting my balls?
I think on normal as long as you save more than you lose, you can get excellent. I lost 7 civilians on one mission because a Muton was running away from me and killing civilians as he fled.

If I'm playing with friends we typically go for more action-oriented genres. I'd rather be playing tf2, bf3, dayz, etc., when multiplayer is an option.

Same stuff happens, just in real time, which makes it more entertaining for me. Flying a transport copter in BF3 is a great way to proactively encourage such moments. :)

"Guys, I can totally fly this, just hop in and we'll zoom around capping all the points for an easy win, trust me."

By law, friends must dick each other over in cooperative games. Otherwise you'll spend 10 years in prison.

Rapid Fire mechanics and probability analysis:
http://sinepost.wordpress.com/2012/10/26/probability-in-games-xcom/

So there you have it: between 34% and 96% chance on a normal shot (inclusive), you’re better off using rapid fire if the alien only needs one shot to kill him (and ammo is not an issue).

So above a 30% chance for a normal hit, you’re increasingly better off to fire two shots, if what you care about is doing a lot of damage. And in XCOM, if you’re shooting anything with less than a 30% chance, you’re pretty desperate!

Just royally fucked up on a VIP mission. I had my VIP and 2 squadmates hunkered behind a large SUV, trying to draw out the last 2 sectoids, one of them fired at me, missed, but blow the fucking SUV up killing all three guys. But I manged to finish the aliens off and escort a 2nd civilian to the plane (who I guess was the sergeant that was my reward), and I got the full reward from the mission.

Coop would be amazing if done right. Some sort of asynchronous/synchronous mode where each player would have their own HQ. You could share resources/items/even interceptors and soldiers, you'd decided who would deal with each invasion, etc.

Basically while in combat you'd go into asynchronous mode and in the HQ it could be synchronous. One player could be in combat the other one in the base, etc. And ofcourse, some big battles, like story missions, could have both players in combat mode.

Honestly, it's how I was hoping the MP would be.

Nothing will be good enough when you whiff an "almost guaranteed shot" and then someone gets reamed. :/

*Still raw*

What about the 100% shots that do 2 damage when your other guy who has 50% does a critical 7!

THATS XCOM BABY!

ugh

Chain panic needs to go. Panic is fine to throw a little risk in the operation, but when one panic could lead to more than half your squad turning useless just because someone got winged for a point of damage, it takes too much control away from the player. They're depending more on luck than any kind of skill.

Just got layed the fuck out on a downed UFO mission. 4 missed overwatches, a missed 56% and 45%. Meanwhile the aliens hit 4 out of 5 shots taken all when I was behind full cover. Good Lord. I was lucky to just abandon the mission with my 1 surviving sarg.

Is this worth a rent? I just finished my 2nd playthrough of Dishonored and have 4 days until ACIII...Any chance I can play through it by then?

Do yourself a favor and don't rent this if you plan on picking up Ass. Creed. Wait till after, you won't have enough time to play this, and then it seems you'll want to play through again and again and....

Hmm, I might wait and get ACIII for Wii U..I really want to play this..it's been too long since I've done some TBS and this looks amazing..I've only been ignoring it because I picked up Dishonored first.

Mind control is really screwing me up. What can I do about it? :(
The first UFO mission after the Alien Base really screwed me over. I didn't realise they would be there, but worse than that, they were outside. If they are in the little room at the end of the ship, you can mess them up easily, but outside is annoying. I couldn't get a line of sight on the Commander, as Mutons were all around him, so I just retreated. It still ended up pretty bad.

Anyway, from that point I've been smashing them. You need to be cautious when moving; always expect one to be around and have your people covering one another. Also, I send my weakest unit out front, incase it does go bad. Another advantage of that, is that the Sectoid Commander loses his turn if he uses mind control, so it makes him very vulnerable.

At the moment, I'm on my third Classic/Ironman attempt. This one has been the best so far. I went basically straight for the main missions, as last time I waited far too long and there was some crazy shit on the Alien Base mission. Cyberdisks, Heavy Floaters, Elite Mutons etc. lol. Still, it's gone beyond that point this time, but I've been able to handle it, as my squad is pretty decked out.

Last mission I faced not one, not two but three Sectopods. I didn't hold much hope of making it out alive, but I actually did well in the end. Only two deaths. My heavy with a heavy plasma and heat bullets was amazing against the Sectopod, doing 20 odd damage each hit.

I'd say that's a good idea. It seems, short of picking up ACIII on PC, getting on the WiiU is the better/best console version. Besides, if you were to get this by the time the WiiU is out and about you'll know definitively which version is best and can make your purchase accordingly.

Wanna hear a good joke? Waste your time helping me! LOL!
I think I have been officially spoiled by video game sales...

I've wanted to pick this game up since it came out for the Xbox, but I am incredibly hesitant to because this seems like a game that would either get a sale or drop in price pretty quickly on the consoles.

"Listen up assholes. We EMPd this Alien Battleship for a good goddamn reason. Stop shooting at every fucking power core you see."
"You! You, Vampire. I SAW THAT."
"You weren't even supposed to be firing in that direction. What the fuck was that?"

"You guys are dicks."

The occasional seething hatred for my troops really takes me back.
There's so much I miss from the original, but the callbacks really work.

My Assaults go around carrying Shotguns which is useless while on overwatch.
Are shotguns useful in general? Or should I swap them out with Assault Rifles?

Right now my team is:
2 Heavies
2 Assaults
1 Support
1 Sniper

My Sniper does the most kills. Is this a good team configuration?
Playing on Normal. Not Ironman.
