Classic Ironman pretty much dead in the water after 2 months, lost too many countries and my best troops on an abduction mission.

Restart!

Good god, it's like D-Day everywhere, every day.

I have to try this.

I'm about to hit the first UFO mission. The first time I got the
Alien Escapee
mission, I lost 2 rookies and had my Medic/Support panic twice. Luckily he, came back from there, got 1 more kill and saved himself.

My Assault who had 2 kills prior to that mission was the star of the show with 5 kills on Sectoids and Thin Men.

Now that my Heavy (the only survivor from the tutorial mission) is back in action after recovering from his wounds on Mission 2, I'm really hoping the rocket launcher will even the odds a bit.

Woke up an 1 hour 30 minutes early to unlock and play xcom before work. Knackered but I egret nothing!

Only got up to the first crash, when does it stop guiding you?

Rocket Launcher is really great to have around as an OH CRAP button or to deal with alien patrols that can't be dealt with economically due to terrain issues.

I just got two snipers with squadshot+SCOPE. Going to see if I can abuse this until I get laser weapons going.

edit: morale failure rate seems way way higher than vanilla. Will take getting used to.

I love the random Operation names for each mission.

It sure is important not to let people get killed in the early missions. You really need specialized guys, not rookies, in the early going where the aliens are one-shotting everyone who isn't at least a Squaddie.

KIA
Squaddie Ruben Torres (Heavy): 6 kills/3 Missions
5 Random Rookies

WIA
Squaddie Raul Perez (Support): 2 kills/3 Missions, wounded and out for 4 days
Rookie William Allen (Sniper): 2 Kills/1 Mission, severely wounded and out for 15 days

Ready for Action
Cpl. Jack Thompson: 8 Kills/3 Missions
A raft of unknown rookies

Not looking good.

Everything was going great until my troops panicked and killed eachother multiple times already, ruining several missions. No more Ironman for me. My troops have been panicking way too much. The panic algorithm either needs tweaking, or it's just unforgiving, or I'm just plain unlucky.

Do soldiers still have a bravery stat or something similar?

Sounds like his recruits are pruning themselves. XCOM is pretty harsh, I ran into a wave of panics early on and had to restart. I'm not playing Ironman though, just regular Classic.

The drastically restricted economy (very good thing!) makes pruning recruits real hard early on. I'm assuming it'll get easier since the rookie cost is fixed but your income will increase over time, which (of course) will be needed when you start to hit alien psy troops.

I already had to abandon my classic ironman run.

I made the mistake of not skipping the tutorial, which means that at the start of mission 2 I was forced to move my heavy in range of those two sectoids. The one hit he took caused him to be wounded which resulted in a cascade failure of being forced to bring rookies to every mission, and they would panic EVERY TIME anyone got hit by anything. After I failed the bomb defusal mission because of this (and a lack of clarity what the timer meant by 1 turn remaining, I thought I had 1 more) I just gave up. I'll try again after I get some practice on normal ironman, which is going pretty damn well so far.

But yeah the hit rate and panicking is just such a huge difference on classic. It's brutal.

So far it is going well. I am glad I changed my mind and went normal to learn the game before going classic. With that said I think I can feel the alien hands tightening around my neck. The UK and Nigeria(I think?) are getting pretty close to cutting ties with me. I think I might have to try and focus on Europe and leave Africa to fend for its self. Decisions, Decisions.

I think my next attempt at classic I'll disregard the arc thrower for a while and just rush to beam weapons and the officer school. That wound time reduction is going to be HUGELY important, and 6 squad members speaks for itself. And I'm so very sick of seeing 2 damage hits on sectoids.

Well:

About 1 and a half hours in, I'm down to 4 active soldiers (all rookies) and $2. Total of 7 soldiers, but my 3 surviving squaddies are all injured and out of action.

Last mission my whole squad wiped due to some unfortunate panicking on the part of my soldiers.

Pretty much.

Here is a quick tip. If you sorta know what you are doing start over without the tutorial or disable it from the start. This way does not lock you into any early research and also avoids the everyone dies first mission so you can rank your guys up a bit on easy missions.

Also: Rushing for Carapice armor, squad size, and then weapons. Everything else can go screw itself.

Gave up on classic Ironman..

Had an escort mission, was 1 turn away from boarding the ship with everyone intact!
Out of nowhere, thin men appear on the roof of this parking lot overlooking my ship.

I toss a grenade, BOOM both aliens down! Home sweet home!.. nope.
The soldiers who were one turn away from freedom were near some cars, the debris from the rooftop caused the cars to catch fire and explode on the next turn, killing half my squad.

Fuck that =/ I pussied out and started a normal Ironman.

How do I build uplink facilities for satellites?

honestly might just manual iron man; no mid-mission saving, saves only revert in cases of complete mission catastrophy because it sounds like that's extremely likely

Fuck that?! This is why you play Classic Ironman :V

You share the hilarious tales of woe with the rest of us.

Use the roguelike approach: It's not if you win, it's how awesome you fail.

Classic Ironman still going strong. Lost a few good men, but the cause is just. RIP Emilio Estevez and Jake Solomon.

I only fucked up one mission. Operation Crystal Skull was my first bomb defusal op. I wasn't paying attention to my distance to the bomb generators.

When I heard "GTFO! BOMB'S GONNA BOOM!", all 4 of my guys evac'ed safely. Fuck Argentina.

I'd recommend doing it like that. For two reasons. First off is what you said. The second is recording errors. If you can't go back and re-do something, then what if the screenshots don't work or the video got corrupted? You can't make a new one.

Save often, save in multiple files, rerecord as needed. Anything else is just making it needlessly complicated for you.
