Got my copy and I'm having a great time. I sang Bakamitai at the bar and I was laughing so hard due to how overdramatic it was.

I only beat Y4 earlier this month but it feels good to be back in Kamurocho.

Is there a "ThePatrick" style guide for the side quests in the game?
I don't know if he just quit writing guides all together.

"He's a fisting artist"

"Whoa...that's not really my scene."

I burst out laughing.

So did I. Also lost it at Kiriyu having "healing fists" and causing the two drunks you fight at the very beginning to sober up and forget their differences.

I love that it doesn't take itself seriously despite some of the darker subject material (and being that I've only finished chapter 1 it'll probably get much worse.)

I popped the game in and like 3 minutes into the introduction I got a disc read error and every time I try to load it I get the same thing.

Is my PS4 dead?

I think ThePatrick was getting burnt out on the series after 4? I remember reading a few posts from him around the time and he just sounded burnt out. Which is a pity as he's the reason that I managed to play through Kenzan (plus his guides for Yakuza 1-3 were also excellent).

This is weird. Try re-installing and, if that don't work, turn off the PS4 completely and try again.

I suck at dancing, just like in real life. I couldn't get the timing right.

While I'm playing I keep thinking how cool (in a weird way) this game is. The mini intros to each mini game crack me up. So over the top.

As someone who likes to experience series in full, what's the best options for doing so with Yakuza. Alternatively is there a source to clarify the series order between odd naming like Kiwami and 0?

OP indicates it's fine to start with 0 then pick up Kiwami (remake of 1), but is the story linear from 0 to 1? And where to go from there?

It runs at a lower framerate, but nothing too egregious. I did a karaoke song and a fight. Both were fine. Remote play is overall pretty good IMO. Though I'm probably not the best one to judge because I don't use it too often.

Thank you for the impressions. I'll have to check it out.

Awesome, thanks!
And yeah, his guides for 3 and 4 are what got me really deep into the games.

Can anyone speak to how limited the Launch Edition stock is? I'm a little worried because my copy got kinda crushed en route from Amazon, and I'm worried that my replacement won't include the extras.

I've played for a bit and have started the second chapter. Liking the game so far and the story has me interested quite a bit. I'll definitely be playing this for quite a bit as it feels like the game has even come close to opening up yet. I can see how people have talk about how cutscene heavy this game is already in the second chapter, but I don't mind it.

0 has a few nods to future events and characters that fans of the series would appreciate, but the story is its own thing, so no there is no need to have any prior knowledge of the series diving in. From my memory from playing the Japanese game there is only really a couple of references to (flashback) events covered in Yakuza 4 (basically how Majima got his eye patch) but that's it. Start at Yakuza 0.

Kiwami has a couple of new side missions that carry on from Yakuza 0, and the fighting system and gameplay improvements have been copied across from 0 as well. 0 feels very much like a lead into Yakuza 1, so its well worth playing 0, then moving onto Kiwami afterwards.

From there its up to you. The good news is each game has its own story, so you don't have to play each one in numerical order if you don't want to. 2 is seen by many fans as the best in the serious from a plot perspective (the villain is just plain awesome) but its only on PS2 and pretty expensive in America these days. Get it if you can though, as no remake of the game has been confirmed so currently the PS2 is the only way to experience it in English (it got an HD remaster for the PS3 and Wii U in Japan only).

3 is a real love/hate game depending on who you ask, I personally like it but others don't like the slower start (focusing on the orphanage) and some of the plot twists. I do think the main support character (Rikyia) is one of, if not the best supporting characters in the entire series. Its only on the PS3 and only available physically. It was also butchered in terms of side content when released in English (mini games and some side stories were removed completely due to Sega stupidity).

4 is often looked at the other best game in the series, three new protagonists makes it a nice point to jump into the series. Each character has unique combat styles (Seijima is a tank, Tanimura focuses on parries and counters for example). This one is definitely worth playing. It also has a couple of plot points (both in the main game, and side missions) that heavily reference both Yakuza 1 and 2. Like 3 its PS3 only.

5 is a huge game that like 3 has a divisive opinion within the community. Its got more cities and activities to take part in than any other game in the series but it can be argued that maybe it has too much. The story also has pacing problems and gets a bit too convoluted for its own good at times. I still loved the game though, just because of the sheer variety on offer in the game. Like 3-4 its PS3 only, and only available digitally in English.

6 heavily references the ending and Kiryu/Haruka plots from 5, so its probably worth playing 5 first before playing 6. However the beginning of 6's intro is basically just 5's ending so you won't feel lost skipping 5 straight for 6.

Hope that helps. Basically while the best way to experience the game is to play them in order, you very much can pick and choose which games to play if you don't want to play them all.

Start with Yakuza 0 then wait for Yakuza Kiwami on PS4. Kiwami means extreme in english so, in a literal translation, it would be Yakuza extreme (a good title for a remake).

After playing both, and if you're not tired, it will depend on you on what to do.

Yakuza 2 is a PS2 game and we're hoping it gets the same treatment as Yakuza 1. However, if it does happen, it should launch later this year or the next in Japan and it will take a while for it to be localized.

Y3-Y4-Y5 are all on PS3. Y3 is the only one without a digital version, so you might want to track it down.

Yakuza 6 releases early next year in english and it has videos that explains what happened in every main game of the series. The story on Yakuza 6 is more dependent on the final events of Yakuza 5, however, the beginning of the game does a good job of explaining the whole situation for those that didn't played it.

I just warn you that you might get burned out of the series, so it would be nice to take things slow.

This game looks surprisingly good. I love how detailed and realistic the world can look at times.
Yeah, it looks fantastic. Some of the character models of the side characters and pedestrians can be a little rough, but it's also a lot to ask for everyone to have the same amount of detail that the main characters do

Can't wait to see what Kiwami and 6 look like when they come over

Opening the shrink-wrap and booting the game, the first thing my wife and I did is play the 2P mini-games. All four of them!

Mainline Series (in release order)

Yakuza 1 (PS2)
Yakuza 2 (PS2)
Yakuza 3 (PS3)
Yakuza 4 (PS3)
Yakuza 5 (PS3 digital)
Yakuza 0 (prequel) (PS4)
Yakuza Kiwami (remake of 1) (PS4)
Yakuza 6 (PS4)

Spinoffs

Ryu Ga Gotoku Kenzan (PS3) historical
Yakuza Dead Souls (PS3) zombie
Ryu Ga Gotoku Ishin (PS3/PS4) historical
Kurohyō: Ryū ga Gotoku Shinshō (PSP)
Kurohyō 2: Ryū ga Gotoku Ashura hen (PSP)

Other

Ryu Ga Gotoku 1&2 HD (PS3/Wii U)

Btw - you're looking at approximately 20-25 hours for each title just to beat the story except for Yakuza 1 which is about 15 hours. Yakuza 5 is 45 hours. Double those numbers if you want to do some side stuff. You're looking at anywhere from 200-500 hours to play them. Not to scare you off, just letting you know what you're in for!

Hope you or anyone else out there enjoys them! They still hold up because the story is fun. You'll just have to put up with clunky mechanics and hardware from the past (ie loading times etc).

Good Luck if you want to plat all these games ;)

Any guidance on which tree to focus CP on? I decided to go with more money upon battle completion, but can't help to think it may be short-sighted (and that I won't need it for money later on).

Is it just me, or do you seem to get far less money when fighting in rush mode?

Since you can't grab people or pick up things it seems that drastically limits your combat and variety that you can do, at least from what I can tell or am I missing something?

wtf are the tissues for?

a part of the japanese experience. not sure if it's still a thing, but you'd used to run into tons of people advertising for different businesses by offering great free pocket tissues in real life over there.

in other words it's just a waste of inventory space.

so i just started chapter 2 and i dont know where i should be going

Nothing like a 2+ hour first chapter! Phew!

Do the side quests unlock right at the beginning of the 2nd chapter (after the cinematic) or do they start to appear later in the chapter?

Which store has the damn scotch whiskey needed for that one mission? I've got everyone squared away except him.I swear I've bought every alcoholic drink available.

It's one of the convenience stores. IIRC it's either the one in north west or the one down in the south east.

First, listen to the two guys with the text bubble over their heads talking down the street from hotel district (near batting center). Then go to bowling alley near theater square (west side of the map)

A little bit later.

I'm assuming the platinum for this takes 100+ hours.

Yes. Between the completion list, mini games and side stories you'll easily spend over 100 hours completing it all. Plus you need to do a second playthrough on Legend difficulty. Oh, and keep in mind there are chapter specific trophies which if you miss you'll have to do in your second playthrough.
