Yakuza 0 |OT| Yes, you can start with this one!

Hmm. I wonder if that really is a 80's "boombox". If it is it's ahead of it's time, as it looks more like a 90's stereo than your typical 80's boxy affair.

I kinda want to see the reward you get for the cabaret quest, but goddamn, Majima really doesn't need any more help. Breaker alone just wrecks fools like no tomorrow.

I should probably focus on doing the story for now, so I can finish before Automata comes out. I'll do the cabaret stuff in the premium whatever then.

W007, just finished the game! That was so fun and intense. I loved that
The final bosses used the same fighting styles of the character you were playing with.

Overall a very strong experience. Can't wait for Kiwami.

Wow, the chapters just fly by when you're focusing on the story. Already on chapter 13. Looks like you could finish the game in like 10 hours if you just ran from story trigger to the next.

Yeah, there's very few complaints I have about Yakuza 0, but the historical accuracy is a bit off. I'm guessing they just reused assets from the previous Yakuza games due to budget constraints. Only a few characters like Awano really get the good 80s treatment (and Tachibana seems pretty legit for a businessman of the day), although the women seem to be more accurate than the men as those tight-fitting dresses were popular in the late 80s. But there is a serious lack of color; most NPCs look pretty drab.

Of course you had the big shoulderpad business suit look, which Yakuza 0 does get right

i got kiwami and especially 6 on my mind even though there are so many other great games coming out

15 hours in I'm still in chapter 2 help

This has got to be the most fun checklist game I have played in a long, long time. Everything in this game is fucking highest quality. Virtually nothing is half-assed, although I guess I don't enjoy the combat overly much.

Finally I finished Yakuza 0. ~46hours and only 26% of completition. Best Yakuza experience form me so far.

I manage to defeat kiryu's final boss with 3 stamina XX and some Taurine. That was a hard motherf...

I really want to complete some other minigames and sidequest.

Are sidequest tied to city of origin of Kiryu and Majima?

Yes, sidequests are only in the cities you campaigned in for their respected story. You can still do stuff in the other areas minus like the Casino/West Park is only for their respective characters.

Kiryu always felt like a design that the team never quite was sure what the best balance of looks was. With the shift to HD, I felt like they didn't quite land on their definitive look till Y0, which they then built on to the Y6 look.

They should just scan Kitamura who played the live action Kiryu. Great actor too, and he basically looks like him. He even got the badass mad eyebrows.

Just finished the story. 45 hours, 32% completion.

I'm not gonna get back to this soon since I don't wanna get burnt out on the side stuff (I think I did most of the story heavy stuff), but this is a masterpiece and easily GOTY material. Even in a year in which Zelda released, even if Persona 5 fulfills my wildest dreams, even if Xenoblade 2 surpasses the first one, even if Mario Odyssey breaks Metacritic with the first 11/10 score, this one right here, is gonna hang out with them. What a goddamn game, what a pure labor of love. Passion just drips from this game.

The hype was real. Bring on Kiwami.

From those screenshots I like kiryu's look the most in Kiwami.

About the movies though I wonder if they were good or I feel they fall under the usual trend of movies based on games sucking

I've not really heard that many great things about the movie, though apparently Majima does get one decent scene in the adaptation of Yakuza 1...

Overall it's pretty mediocre, Miike took some liberties like the Y1 area
you know the underground city one and it's shadow kage boss.
is literally just like a little smuggling bunker with some weird like kid running it as an example. But the worst complaint is that it's like they said Yakuza substories and were like oh they're great, and made a movie where like 4 substories have the same/more screen time as Kiryu, while Kiryu maybe just passes them by the street at most and has zero involvement with them, and all of these substories are pretty one dimensional and bad.

Kiryu and Haruka are okay in it. The guy who portrayed the cop who said Superchunk in Y4 is in it. Majima is all around fantastic.

The movie as a whole however is a long drawn out mess because of like 1h of the 2? hours being literally nothing filler, not worth it at all except for majima which you can just youtube.

FINALLY got home with my copy last night and was able to play it for about an hour or so. Even though I had seen lots of reviews, the game still blew me away as a long time fan of the series.

Firstly the game just looks great, and not only that, it's two years old already. I'd put this up there with just about anything released before it. It's a really vibrant colorful world both during the day and at night. And the great thing about the Yakuza games are that they always continuously improve over each game and the graphics bump to 1080/60 makes it the most definitive version of Yakuza yet.

While some reviews mentioned the disjointedness of the various styles of cutscenes, I really enjoyed the new 'comic book' style or black and white style scene. It just gave the scenes an added amount of drama. The story is also incredibly fascinating right off the bat, Kiryu is in trouble within minutes and I love the way the story goes straight into Nishiki. As a huge fan of Y1, it's awesome to play this story arc in Y0 knowing everything I know from Y1. They don't waste any time in diving into his character either.

The combat has also been smoothed out, Kiryu's dash is way more responsive and the counter move added is really intuitive. I also like the Final Fantasy style sphere grid for skill unlocks.

This game is blowing my mind.

wow counter hook is so good against mr shakedown's charge. except now he's progressed to the point where he switches between shoulder tackles and the stupid OHKO grab

Wtf? You can transfer money between characters? Here I am scraping funds together to take over the media king's territory and I've got Majima sitting on 15 billion yen

Yeah, just talk to Mr Moneybags in each region (Vincent in Tokyo and in front of Grand in Osaka). Also I'm surprised it isn't the other way around for you, my Majima was broke most of the time.

Wow, that sounds bad :( I'll just Youtube the Majima bits then. Thanks for the heads up!

I've actually wondered for awhile now: is there any purpose in getting behind an enemy while grabbing them?

Certain heat moves can only be performed if you grab the enemy from behind.

You get a billion for each Cabaret boss and 10 billion at the end. I'm always broke as Kiryu buying up and upgrading real estate. Not broke broke but for example now I'm holding about 2 billion but I still have properties I need to buy

"Moshi moshi. ...Do you like pineapples?"

I hate Kuze so much. I hope everyone who beat the game agrees with me that he and pretty much all the villains deserved much worse

By the end I really didn't hate Kuze.
He tried to stop the torture guy. He was just trying to get results because his ass and future were on the line. Kuze was a yakuza to the core, but he didn't seem like an evil guy. He began to respect Kiryu, and offered up all that information to Kiryu at the end which he didn't have to do. That torture guy with the hammer though, he deserved much much worse.

How did I miss this.

Wrong!

By the end I really didn't hate Kuze.

Yep, dude was mostly just doing what he had to do.
Part of the whole story with him and Awano was to serve as precautionary tales to Majima and Kiryu of where their future could take them if they're not careful. And by the end both regained a little of that spark they had when they were younger, especially Kuze. He could have really ended Kiryu's rescue attempt but chose not to due to his pride.

I wanted to continue the main story, played the cabaret club game for 5 hours instead. :/

I spent like a whole week doing nothing but Kiryu's real estate game XD

Kuze was pretty badass and intimidating during the first two chapters, but after that he pretty much became a joke imo.

Awano was my favorite of the three boss dudes, he always managed to steal the show when he made an appearence.
And of course the best is also the only one of the three who actually dies. To be fair, he was a massive dick.

Shibusawa was the most boring of the three honestly.
(Which is why I thought the final battle was a bit anticlimatic. He gets bonus points for being the only character who actually knows how to shoot someone in the head though.

For some reason I decided to get 100% completion in this game.

I stayed up late collecting weapons and tomorrow I'm going to learn how to play mahjong.

Finished it last night, 50 hours@52% completion. The Yakuza games really know how to hype up their final chapters.

I so regret finishing the hostess storyline, so boring and grindy.

Also ending spoilers:
Sagawa :(

well
Tachibana would never have been there getting tortured if Kuze didn't take part in that evil agenda in the first place. Not to mention Kiryu's anger towards him boils over so quickly...and Kuze should've known better than to cross Kiryu since he lost to him already like twice by the time we get to the Tachibana torture scene?

well of course coz your avatar.

FUCK him and what he chose to "have to" do!

Currently Chapter 14. Story, Characters, Voice acting, based on those aspects it is my GOTY. The amount of quality involved here is amazing.

I hope that the remake of the first yakuza is on a similar level. I already know that I want to learn more about Kiryu, which is such a badass guy.

loving the fact that this game is getting mentioned in so many goty convos

although I wonder if it's mostly from people who play just playstation games, or all games across the board

Two negative things occurred to me recently that I forgot to mention.

1- Unless I got that scene wrong it was kinda disgusting how they had Tachibana, the chinese-japanese, downplay what Japan did in WW II as exaggerations by foreign powers.

2- In his boss card why did they still have Shibusawa rank as lieutenant even though he was promoted by the time you fought him?

Also ending spoilers:
Sagawa :(

You really feel bad for him? Dude was so scary.

well of course coz your avatar.

That only proves he da bes.
