Oh.
Is one of the recordings considered substantially better than the other? This isn't the japanese equivalent of the MGS1 US dub vs. The Twin Snakes re-recording dilemma, where you could tell the actors didn't really care about doing all of the dialogue over, right?
Well I don't speak Japanese, but having played through Kiwami in its entirety, I can say that it sounded great! The voices seemed to be pretty on point and as you would expect. I also own the Japanese copies of Yakuza 1+2 on PS2 and the VA is still good, but definitely not as clear or as well mixed. The re-recording was necessary, I think.
As far as Kiwami is concerned, people should consider it a sister game to Yakuza 0. They're designed to be played back to back. But keep in mind, this was a rather small project for the team as it was being made while the majority of staff were working on Yakuza 6. As mentioned above, it reuses the same character animations from the original game but "dressed" with the graphics engine of Yakuza 0.
It looks fine, but not as "polished" as 0, and given that these games all have their fair share of jank to them, it's more noticeable.
Lastly, while I'm on the subject of graphics, I'd like to reiterate for the few people who have issues with the engine of Yakuza 0 - it's not only a 2 year old game, it's a game that was also released on the PS3. With that said, I've generally seen nothing but absolute praise and positivity from people, and I couldn't be happier!
God I want to get into this series. Where do I start? I have a PS3, a 360, a PS4, a Wii U, and a gaming PC. Though from what I understand, the series is focused entirely on Sony consoles.
I've started buying up last gen games while they're cheap just in case they get rare/expensive soon. I picked up Tokyo Mirage Sessions for $30 while I could, and Nier for $20. I can still get all the PS3 Yakuza games for relatively cheap. Should I nab them? What order do I go in? Was thinking starting with Dead Souls since it's a spinoff, but then it's probably going to rely a lot on inside jokes and knowledge of past games, right? Start with Yakuza 3, watch the recaps, and just go in release order?
You could start with Zero, move onto Kiwami, then go back to the PS3 for 3, 4, and 5, back to PS4 for 6. That's the most practical.
OR if you could get your hands on the PS2 versions of Yakuza 1+2, I'd suggest playing them in order of release. That is, 1-5, then 0, then 6. The reason I might suggest this (if possible) is because certain characters motivations and personalities are quite different in 0 compared to future games in the franchise. I think people who start with 0 and move to Kiwami (1) will see a radical change in Majima's behavior, but it'll make sense. For those who've been playing in order, it was especially strange seeing Majima as we've come to know and love him - and then see him as he's portrayed in 0. Plus it has a bunch of little throwbacks and references to future games in the timeline. That said, the first option would probably be better for you. You'll be missing out on Yakuza 2 of course, but thankfully, Yakuza 3 (and 4) have "reminisce" options in the main menu that cover the main story and plot, complete with cutscenes.
..Oh, and Dead Souls.
