Yakuza Ishin PS4 1080p Launch Trailer

That's a gamble, especially when people have inFamous, Metal Gear, and other titles to buy, not including some would just avoid getting more games if they have a backlog and some might not even see it or be interested in this type of game.

This game don't need to sell as well as those games. The game is already complete. They need to spend some money on text translation, can skip out on English voice acting, release it digital only if they don't want to risk printing discs. The factor that will determine the success is marketing which Sega is incapable of. However, I don't think it'd be too difficult to market. Just shout out OPEN WORLD! STORY! 1080P! SAMURAI! NEXT-GEN! and enough people will buy it for the localization to be profitable.

Fuck... I've never played a Yakuza game but I'd buy this in a heart beat. You'd get me at next gen Feudal Japan.

Do you think this will sell in the west? It's a guaranteed bomb and not worth the effort.

If it had professional voice acting and a good localization script, backed by solid advertising, then yes, I think it would sell well in western markets. But even with well-localized subtitles and game menus, I think the sales would be worth their effort, plus a good opportunity to test the waters for future Yakuza titles.

when I see trailers like these, I just think the devs aren't really proud of the gameplay. the best thing about their creation is cut scenes so they make a trailer show casing that. so sad

Err, jump to conclusion much? This is the launch trailer. Launch trailer always just shows the characters and the world. They usually release the gameplay trailer separately. Actually IIRC they did release gameplay trailer first.

EDIT: Yes they did

During the PS3 era, the Yakuza games did shit all in profits everywhere that wasn't Japan. Sega wouldn't even release the numbers of the US but proudly tout Japan's sales.

It cost money to put your game on the networks. It cost lots of money to translate games, even more so with titles that contain a lot of text like the Yakuza series. You have the script, the game items (which are a ton!), the move list, enemy dialogue, instructional pieces, etc. None of that is free and people seemingly forget cost like that when they want their favorite games to come over.

The developers have expressed interest, but Sega needs more funds before they can take the risk of bringing it out again. They have good reason to be wary, even if bringing it out right now would give them a better chance, but that's all it is - chance.

They've also released about three ten minute long (or maybe more than that?) videos explaining the gameplay system. But let's rely on one single trailer to show how interest the developers are in their own game.

I liked the trailer. Yakuza 3 and 4 were really good too. Hopefully this follows suit in quality and in the fact that it gets released outside of Japan.

They should just do a cheap sub and only offer it on their own store like SE and maybe Amazon. Only people who are already Yakuza fans would buy it anyway (its not like having Yakuza Ishin sitting on shelves is going to attract the passerby to purchase it), so this way 1) Sega would realize a higher margin on each sale, 2) fans would still buy, 3) remove the cost of having to ship to thousands of retail stores only for the games to languish on the shelves.

I dont see how they wouldnt make a profit this way.

No one in U.S. will buy it despite their forum claims.

Subs ain't cheap. Selling through only certain retailers would shrink possible profits that could be had on the PSN. That's still not an assured profit.

I want to point this out too. The Yakuza series tanked over here. Nobody bought enough copies of those games, and thus, Sega doesn't see an audience for it. That company doesn't ask for millions, and I'm sure if it had done even close to the Japanese sales, they'd be happy enough to submit those numbers to the public.

CORRECTION: Yakuza 3 did well enough for Sega to be happy. I don't remember the numbers, but they said they loved the initial numbers. 4 probably didn't do better.

Yeah, I know the Japanese store doesn't accept credit cards that don't have Japanese addresses. I have plenty of Yen in my wallet from point cards, though.

My comment about Tomb Raider on the Japanese PS4 PSN was that it has a special note that says it requires a credit card to be purchased and existing wallet balances cannot be used to purchase it.

Wtf???

Ah sorry didnt mean to leave out PSN. Of course release it digitally as well. Basically do what SE is doing for drakengard. Small print run plus digital. Atlus, NIS, and XSEED have been using this strategy for a long time to make a profit on super niche games.

But, once again, digital releases cost money. So does putting it up on Amazon, IIRC. And SE has money, Atlus and NIS have dedicated fanbases, and XSEED is a translation company primarily. Sega isn't doing as bad as they used to be, so they might be able to release it normally, but the Yakuza series isn't big over here.

With the cost of translation alone, I doubt the fanbase here would be able to break even. It's up to the outliners to pick up this game too, and that's a very hard thing to gauge when your other games haven't done shit beyond the 3rd.

I wish they could at least release it as an import, but those are already rare enough as is. And I'm sure having to license the actors makes that even more unlikely.

I just wanna play the Vita app with my US account :(

Right now is the perfect time to localize anything on the PS4.
People will buy anything next-gen right now since there aren't many games on the system.
Just look at TR:DE, pretty decent sales for a game that you can already get for like $10 on the PC with better settings.

But man...I can't even remember the last time I play a game that I am a samurai, and exploring feudal Japan.
Sengoku Musou comes close, but this game is on a whole another level right now for me.
I need to experience this type of setting/gameplay at least once as a gamer.

Like I said, it's all about Marketing which were non-existent for past Yakuza games. Plus the cost of localization would be small compared to cost it took to develop the entire game. Also, I hate to say this, with patches being a common place these days, they can probably skimp on the quality checking of localization process (which I assume takes a large share of the budget). Releasing this game in US when there's less competition can raise the series' mind share among people, and that may end up more important than short-term profit since Sega is sorely lacking in that department.

If Xseed can bring lesser known text heavy Japanese RPGs to the west, Sega can do it as well.

Yakuza isn't normally in my wheelhouse as a translator, but I ended up subtitling it because my Thursday night is going slowly and I guess I want you all to feel terrible about yourselves or something. I don't know. But we're here now and we can't turn back and I hope you all can forgive me.

The two trailers posted in this thread are all the exposure I've ever had to the Yazuka series and this is the result:

Oh god why....I shouldn't have clicked that link.
The trailer narrative is killing me inside, fully knowing that I will never get to experience the rise of the new dawn of Japan.

Damn thanks for that. The original video wasn't loading for some reason so I was able to watch it because of your video.

I'm not that familiar with Yakuza but this looks interesting. I love games that are set in Japan. The music killed the trailer for me though, so out of place.

Everybody keeps talking Yakuza this or Yakuza that, if anything, Sega should rebrand it for Western release. Get rid of the name Yakuza and call it something else.

I don't know...I think they just need to market it properly. I had honestly never heard of Yakuza until a year or two ago, even though I'm really into Japanese games.

Plus I think Yakuza sounds cool. They just need a strong marketing push to associate Yakuza with certain elements. Associating it so that westerners understand the 'Japanese Mafia' aspect would make it have appeal I think.

Yeah, it's shitty, but Square Enix usually is. I think it might be because the game is 4800 Yen on the Japanese PSN while it's $59.99~ elsewhere.

yikes, those graphics are shockingly rough for a PS4 game, but I won't lie, I'd be there day 1 for an English version

Is it open world? Wouldn't that be a first!
US gamers don't want a game set in ancient japan, much less one with subtitles. There is no hope of it selling decently.
