Yakuza KIWAMI |OT| Translator's Note: "KIWAMI" means "EXTREME"

I've probably killed 500 thugs and damn is the exp given so low.

quest exp are in the 1000s only as well. Only quest that have given a lot of exp were the mushiking quest line.

I can't imagine filling up the 85 bar skills. Only managed to complete the 3 bar skills and the 10 bar skills on the body tree. To be fair I've only been doing the side stuff and I'm still just at the part where you feed the dog. Are the exp given gonna increase on the main quests?

you level up by the hundreds after certain bossfights.

later substories give more exp. and eventually majima everywhere will max you out, particularly once you unlock tiger drop. if you do everything as it unlocks in-game, you'll max out everything in chapter 10

You get so much exp later that you stop giving priority to upgrades.

I just went and preordered the launch edition of 6 so I'll be double dipping that too.

while I am not looking forward to getting older, March next year is not that far away

Just finished Yakuza 0 and found out there's a prologue movie. Should I bother with that? Or will Yakuza Kiwami have those story.

later majima everywhere encounters give like 300 experience points, let alone story bosses, i'm not even at the end of the game and have everything but dragon of dojima filled out. and have like 1000+ experience points.

this is pretty much the only yakuza game where you don't need to grind experience

Two things:

1) Agree with you about thugs/random battles. They are way too common but do not give you any EXP. Either make them rare or make them worth it. They are very annoying.

2) Substories give you a ton of EXP at the beginning and the plot/bosses take care of the rest. Maxing out the non-Dragon of Dojima skills is very easy.

It's a movie where Majima headbutts two people who are wearing hardhats. And knocks them out.

It's not necessary to enjoy the story but it's worth watching just for the absurdity.

I read a little synopsis for the movie and worried if I'm entering spoiler zone, are those story part of Kiwami?

I think the story is a large part of Yakuza 1 so yeah, spoiler territory.

Guess I will skip it then, I'll just jump straight into Yakuza Kiwami next week.
What a masterpiece, Yakuza 0. Holy shit. I've cried like a bitch throughout the game.

Also I hate that Yakuza is such a lengthy game. You spent a week knowing these cool characters, loving them, and then they will never appear in the next game again.
Makoto, Oda and the Ponytail Majima :(

Well.....
Makoto will be in Yakuza: Kiwami 2
.

Isn't Kiwami 2 supposed to be remake of 2? Did they change the story a lot? Since
Makoto doesn't seem to be in Yakuza 2 according to wiki.

Although, I'm also sad that we won't be seeing the
three lieutenants
. I really love
Kuze
and
Awano
.

Any game that can make me love both side, every single character is a great game. It's crazy how I love EVERY single character in Y0.

Edit: After typing that I realize Kiwami 2 is not out so nobody knows anyway.

Well, there's a take.

I'm pretty sure not all those characters are many to be likeable

We do know, because when they announced
Kiwami 2, they announced that Majima will be playable (for the first time in the Dragon Engine) and that a "certain character will reappear" and that line was said with Makoto's face on the big screen so it's pretty much a soft
confirmation.

Ah, so it will be added stuff. Awesome then.

So after playing 0, 4 and now currently playing 5, the Dragon of Dojima style in this game feels a little weak. First the double finishing blow requires heat and consumes quite a lot of it, while in 0, 4 and 5 it doesn't. Second the heat moves from 0 feel like they have been nerfed. The Essence of Sumo Slapping feels weaker and Dragon of Dojima reborn got changed to a stun heat move while loosing that nice punch sequence before the knee smash. Finally why the hell can't Kiryu grab people on the floor in this style anymore, its annoying having to change to Beast just to ground grab when I can do it in all the other games.

To be honest Rush feels like the best style in this game. Its faster than in 0, can use quick step up to 4 times now and has higher hitstun. It says a lot when the Komaki Parry can't stun Majima but a few hits from Rush can.

It does suck as compared to other styles.

Fortunately Tiger Drop is in the game so that brings it back up to the best style in the game ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Sure you can Tiger Drop everything but that can get a little boring after a while. What I liked about the DoD style in other games was that it felt like it was the perfect style. It had power, speed and a lot heat moves here it just feels disappointing. Don't get me wrong it is still a fun style and Tiger dropping people is fun. But I feel they tried to balance it too much and ended up ruining what made it a fun style, especially after what you have to go through to max it out, imo they should of taken what hey had in 0 and added the Komaki moves to it that's it.

I finally completed the Dragon style and Tiger Drop is a godsend for the repeated Majima fights.
I totally freaked out when after i completed one of the hostesses sidequest showed me a real video of the girl in question, thankfully it finished 2 seconds before someone entered my room... that was a close call.

I only have two sidemissions left one of which is the other hostess and another i really don't know (maybe Haruka's requests?) anyway after i completed those i'll put the game to rest.

Yeah, those videos sure are something. Ended up skipping them as they went on for too long as well.

Anyway, finished the game. 30 hours, 40% completion, Majima Everywhere at S rank. There were a ton of fights with him to get that far and it's not really fun anymore. Also have about 20 side stories left and I couldn't win that car racing minigame, so I don't know if I'll bother with completing Majima/substories like I thought I would.

So I'm in premium adventure and I can't get Substory 6 to trigger no matter what.
I've gone into the florist's place at every time of day and with Haruka and not and it never pops. Anyone have any ideas?

That randomly became available for me today. I don't know what triggers these substories, I just focused on others that were already available so maybe completing some unlocks others.

Are there huge gameplay improvements between 0 and kiwami I might start the latter first. (I got a little ways into 0 but I have to buy another copy)

I don't know about that. I'd say they work either way, but 0 adds big context to Kiwami.

I find the original Y1 story extremely weak in places, namely giving you a reason to care about some characters and events. Kiwami adds new stuff but IMO it's still weak without 0 as context.

Yeah I'd struggle to give a shit about any of these people so far if I hadn't played 0 first

Edit: Well maybe Nishiki, cause Nishiki's awesome regardless

I think we are agreeing here.

I thought in your previous post you were suggesting playing 0 first ruins the impact of Kiwami.

KIRYU CHAN

*random encounter with street ruffians, combat ends*
KIRYU CHAN
*looks around some more to no avail*
KIRYU CHAN
*backtracks a bit and notice a collectible, pick it up*
KIRYU CHAN

AAAAAAAAAAARGGH

Edit: as usual complaining on gaf works, turns out he was in a garbage bin I already had passed half a dozen times without triggering it

Just got done with chapter 10.

I wasn't exactly surprised by Reina's death as she never appeared in any of the later games I've played (Though I was hoping she was just living in piece outside of Kamurocho somewhere.) but man, what an unceremonious way to go.

"Oh, by the way, she's dead now." *Dumps body on floor, boss fight set to techno music ensues*

Speaking of, playing on Normal, I've enjoyed all the boss fights so far, except for the chapter 3 boss and that dice game guy, that was just bullshit.

Majima everywhere is horrible. The idea is nice, but the progression is so slow it starts to get annoying.

I've done all the side stories and just found out
you need to unlock all the dragon abilities to start the last side story. It's bullshit. I'm now at rank SS in Majima everywhere,
I'd guess I'll need to find and fight him another 10 times before unlocking all the abilities.
Might as well just finish the story now.

Edit: oh, you also need to find specific majima for specific skill.

Man just thinking about Kiwami 2 has me so excited. Just remembering bits of it even now, even though it's been like a decade since I last played the OG version of 2 on the PS2. So many villains! And that crazy plot! Don't think any of them since have really topped it except for 0, to be honest but with all of the refinements of both 0 (playing as Majima in Kiwami 2) and 6 (on the same engine, building off the gameplay in that) it's going to be really exciting to see how it plays.

Curious to see if it will actually tie up any tiny loose plot points from 2 like
what the heck happens to certain characters who disappear after the events of 2.

On topic of Kiwami 1 though, 34/40 subquests down, nearly done with them now - 24 hours in, still only on Chapter 9. Majima is still making me laugh turning up in the most random places. I've missed this Majima so much, don't get me wrong I loved seeing a deeper perspective of his character in 0 but I like this version of Majima a lot. He really is living up to his 'Mad Dog' nametag following Kiryu around everywhere like he is. :D

I'm at Ch. 6 now and have a few mid-game(?) thoughts...
- Story pacing is very strange. Started out strong and has kind of dissolved into playing babysitter and running all over town. Even though a few big events have happened, it feels like a small story so far. Really underscores for me though how pitch-perfect Zero's story was.
- There are some nice set pieces like the
Underground
and the hidden
gambling room
, but they feel a bit underused.
Underground
feels a bit like the Pirates of the Caribbean ride with animatronics not reacting to the player at all. I realize this is probably due to the PS2 origins of the game though.
- I like the Majima story encounters in the pre-defined locations, but the Everywhere system has gotten old real fast
- Preferred the skill tree organization of Zero
- Feels like they activated more side stories early on than in Zero, it's hard to walk down the street without starting one. Substory quality has been uneven, some have been fantastic, some I hardly cared about.
- I really liked that one substory that they tied in to the main narrative, they should do more of that
- Some of the asset reuse from Zero is kinda lazy, like Vincent not changing in 20 years. I'd have to go back and check, but I think even the artwork is the same.
- Karaoke in Zero was way way better, both in presentation and the songs. Have little interest to do it in this game.
- Combat system is the shining star. Feels so much more fluid than Zero. For some reason I don't really enjoy fighting goons much though. Maybe it's because they're all blonde-haired douchenozzles. I guess I preferred the 80's aesthetic to the 2000's.

You'll be fine. I'm at the end of the game right now. Between main quests and Majima Everywhere, I have Body, Tech and Soul maxed out and a couple thousand EXP bars I have nothing to spend on.
