Yakuza KIWAMI |OT| Translator's Note: "KIWAMI" means "EXTREME"

Ah that's pretty cool then, nice.

Yakuza 5 was full of weird melodramatic shit with a bunch of characters I didn't care about. Boy were people shouting

Y5 is incredible to me because the story at its worst is a parody-level convulted mess that clearly loses track like 5 hours in, and the game's scope is so huge compared to the rest of the series that you often wonder if they really realized what they were doing.

And yet to me it's far better than the sum of its parts, and its good moments make it one of my favorite games ever.

Yakuza 5 is great.

What other game lets you
drive a taxi responsibly, hunt animals in the snowy wilderness, hit 40 homeruns in a row, kick a dude in the air and keep juggling him like a fighting game and sing/dance at a live concert
in the span of an hour?

Goddammit, I didn't realise (minor substory spoilers)
that you are allowed to lose the fight against Majima wearing the devil mask during the old dude's training missions.
I used all my healing items and was dodging like a motherfucker and playing incredibly slow and safe and managed to beat him after a stupid enough of time. Then the guy is like "I would have given you the upgrade anyway, you were meant to lose."

damn you beat him? respect

After reading this I went and watched some youtube vids and found this one.

I really love the Yakuza team.

Any advice on beating the expert pool player for part of the Haruka meter missions? I can't seem to beat him no matter what. I can never even get to go first either!

Its actually better if u go second. If u go 1st u have to poket alot of low value balls, while if u go secong the balls are already higher value. Dont forget to turn the trajectory preview so u will see where the white ball will hit.

That challenge was super easy for me as i play casual pool in real life. Lost my 1st match, but in my second match i went second and won with 100% acuracy. Dont bother aplying effect on the ball, and dont be afraid to use the boards if the ball u need to hit is not in a good angle.

Is just a matter of getting good at it, and a bit of luck so the balls gets positioned in a easier way for u to poket them all without misses.

I Love Yakuza 5. The game has 31 minigames alone. The story is the weekest in the series, but everething else is really good. Also you can customize the taxi for the races and change the paint job.

Climax Battle Melee 10 I get hit 1 time by the boss and he literally chain stuns me from full hp to 0. Not stagger but the stun with whirling stars above your head.
Fuck the Climax Battle design team what a fucking load of bullcrap that shit is.

Just finished this game, a little disappointed by the story, don't get me wrong it's still great and honestly, I almost teared up at some moments but I guess I excepted something bigger for the first episode in the series. Like for half the time I felt like I was doing some fetch quests and then a few hours later the game said to me "hey bro it's almost time, pack it up".

Gameplay still fun even after playing Zero, Majima everywhere is a nice feature but I didn't do a lot of subquests and minigames, I played a lot of these in Zero and I didn't to get burn out by that, maybe i'll come back later but I still have to improve my cabaret club !

Also I had a lot of issues with bosses, felt like I couldn't do it without one or two healings items at the very least, I probably suck at this because I feel like I could never deal consistent damage to a boss without getting hit. So basically I just give two punches on rush most of the time then dash away or I just force it through with an huge weapon on beast mode. Also the second lastest boss is probably the worst part of this game

Nonetheless a very good game, and at a very low price on top of it

You can equip a gear item (anti stun headgear) that prevents you from ever getting stunned. Try using that.

I haven't really dived into the climax battles yet to be honest. I just assumed that you could. There is a lot of gear in the game and sometimes its easy to miss useful stuff.

You can't climax battles are designed challenges of bullcrap.
That's why they're frustrating.

despite majority of people in the thread telling me to play 0 before kiwami, I couldn't help but play it. There were a few things I had an idea where Yakuza 0 might have given more context to Kiryu's relationships with people such as that info broker guy and Nishiki. when you were told that the info broker guy died, I felt that you were supposed to be emotional but I simply have little to no investment on that character to care. That's just my take on it though so I don't know if he is really important in the prequel.

A few questions though. How do you use the equipped weapon? Should I upgrade adventure first or battle with cp?

I'm just past the timeskip and I'm having fun. The times when the game blocks you from going somewhere is kinda bad though. The game feels a bit claustrophobic but I imagine that'll mean a more close relationship with the denizens of the area.

The smaller scope and lower price sold me on starting with Kiwami as well. Now that I'm finished, I'll probably pick up 0 at some point, and then 2 and 6. I don't feel like I'm missing a lot, but we'll see.

Select the style you're currently using with the d-pad (e.g., if you want to use an equipped weapon in beast mode, press right to switch into beast mode, then press right again to ready your weapon).

Battle gives you better equipment for combat. Adventure lets you run farther without getting winded and a few minor perks. Battle is generally more important.

I'm just past the timeskip and I'm having fun. The times when the game blocks you from going somewhere is kinda bad though. The game feels a bit claustrophobic but I imagine that'll mean a more close relationship with the denizens of the area.

Kiwami is just a small game with a limited number of NPCs. Beat up some punks, do some side missions and minigames, fight Majima, and progress the story.

God, these Majima encounters have me laughing out loud. Favorite one so far has to be
stopping in a random burger joint to heal up on the way to a story mission. Having my order followed by a "would you like a side of Majima with that?" with him appearing right behind me, that just about killed me.

That guy is indeed Everywhere™.

In Kiwami you press the D pad button of the style you have equipped to activate the equipped weapon. IE press Up when in Brawler, Left in Rush, Right in Beast and Down in Dragon.

I really liked the
cabaret club one, where he's in costume and you have to go through the whole dating minigame.

I'm glad I managed to get all the Majima random encounters for the upgrades pretty smoothly. Thought that could be a sticking point with the system for me but it wasn't.

There have been times where I've just wanted to get from A to B and they force an encounter via hiding or forced fight he'd jump into and then the system has annoyed me.

But, by and large, I mostly enjoyed it all the way through.

I do wish I had an easier time fighting him outside of rush, though. I have trouble when he is faster than me so I just default to rush so I can keep my heat better for the kiwami moments.

I just beat this today. I kinda rushed things after chapter 10 where I would just go from story point to story point.

I did a completely different play style than what I did with 0 where I tried to do everything and the only difference in terms of trophies was I had 3% less trophies in Kiwami where I spent like 27 hours compared to 0 where I had near 100...

It was easy for me to just start playing for the story once I realized nothing is really missable and there is no way I'm going to play all the gambling or board games. I didn't completely skip optional content. I still tried to do 3 or 4 substories before moving on to the next chapter as sometimes the rewards are pretty good.

But yeah, I wasn't expecting the ending to pull me in but it got me. I had just played 0 not that long ago and I was feeling kind of indifferent near the end. Kind of like I just wanted it to end already but it still managed to impress me.

I quite liked the gameplay differences in this compared to 0. Not necessarily saying one is better or anything, I just liked how it felt different while largely looking like Yakuza 0 still. The enemies were a bit more counter happy but it actually got me to get better at countering myself so I kind of appreciated it. Some fights would end with an intense back and forth.

I played all of Yakuza 0 and most of Kiwami without realizing that the trouble finder accessory tells you where the substories are at. I never read the description until this game and when I equipped it all of these "!" popped up. I felt like an idiot since I had been manually looking up substory locations in Yakuza 0 the whole time. I automatically assumed it was to have enemies notice you more.

So, is the bit of music that kicks in around 1:28 in "id" a leitmotif that's repeated throughout the series? I mentally denoted it as Kiryu's theme while playing, but I may be way off.

Not that I remember, I found it a bit jarring to be honest, it sounded like a scrapped Metal Gear Solid track and the first section where it plays is dreadful.

The fact that it's supposed to be a remix of a song that's completely different from is so weird.

Yeah, I didn't hear that bit in the PS2 version of the track. It did feel a bit like MGS/Revengence, but even more like Onimusha Dawn of Dreams' Blue Oni theme, which I love.

Kiwami had some music direction from B'z (who also did Dragon Dogma's "Into Free/Dangan" OG intro), right? It feels like peak DC/PS2/PS3 Capcom/Konami/Sega.

Having never played this series before I will certainly be playing every single one they make from now on.

The missions, character interactions and way the game is laid out make me think of all of my favourite parts of Deadly Premonition. I absolutely needed this series.

I did that after SSS ranking Majima Everywhere so it wasn't actually that hard hahaha

Yea, Yakuza and Deadly Premonition are 2 of my favourite things in gaming.

Man I really need to get into Deadly Premonition.

Damn it real life responsibilities, forcing me to plan out what I play :(

Responsibilities suck, but when you get a chance definitely check out Deadly Premonition.

It's potentially my favorite game, period.

the Steam version is notorious for its shitty port and doesn't run on many computers.
360/PS3 are the ideal way to go.

Swery also has a new game that's pretty much Deadly Premonition, but the villagers and player turn to cats at night.
It's being crowdfunded. (unsuccessful)

Just finished this. I liked it even more than 0 even though it was shorter. Can't wait for Kiwami 2.
The final fight gave me serious Mother 3 vibes. It was pretty emotional.

Wow really? Not even with DPfix and mods and stuff? It seemed to run fine on my PC when I tested it like a year back.

Yea, I've heard a lot of reports of it not even starting for people, even with DPfix.

If it's running on your PC, then you're probably fine. It's not like the PC version is missing content. It just doesn't run for people.

Nice. Awesome to hear people digging it as much or more than Y0!

Kiwami 2 is the most anticipated game
after Y6

Is there any way to open an umbrella while walking around? I kind of have umbrella envy and poor Kiryu is getting soaked.

Oh, and fun fact: you can scroll and zoom the map with the touch pad. One of the very few games that actually uses the touch pad as more than a button.

wow! i love the dead souls part in this game =)

Why am I not surprised
