I'm still hesitant about it. It really doesn't have a lot going for it aside from Cameron's name, new technology, whatever.
At least Titanic was based on a real event that remains a popular subject even today.

Who cares which sells more... Avatar is going to be the better movie solely for the purpose that this movie won't have celine dion.

Her song wasn't even in the actual movie, it was in the credits.

It is hugely encouraging to know Digital Domain is working on effects on this. Their work on Benjamin Button is simply groundbreaking.

Some info on James Horner's score for AVATAR:

http://marketsaw.blogspot.com/
"He's worked with Cameron before, of course, most notably on Aliens and Titanic, which won Horner two Oscars. They were fairly traditional orchestral scores but Avatar will have a different approach, employing all sorts of exotic electronic sounds and soundscapes mixed with orchestra - sounds that would be impossible to replicate on a piano. So Horner finds himself working with mock-ups to enable Cameron to hear properly what the score will sound like. When I talked to him about it, there was an air of excitement about doing something new, but also a whiff of apprehension. We'll hear the results at the end of 2009."

Here is also an mp3 of an audio interview with Neville Page (concept artist) who worked on AVATAR.
http://media.libsyn.com/media/sidebar/SiDEBAR_Ep_70.mp3

I love how he describes Cameron as the main concept artist behind the design of all the creatures and the world etc. Very cool when he tells the story of Cameron showing them his own original sketches for Aliens including the Power Loader.

Sony's CineAlta FD950's (which were used on Avatar) can run at 48 fps. Cameron and Vince Pace did tests at this frame rate (in stereo 3D too) and said it looked absolutely mindblowing.

However they couldn't shoot Avatar this way because current digital projectors can't run that fast in 3D without modifications.

Now, from what I understand, Cameron still plans to shoot Avatar 2 and/or Battle Angel at 48 fps.

That seems stupid. Why wouldn't he have just shot at 48Hz, and drop every other frame on the 'prints'?

This movie had better not suck or I'm done with Cameron.

Don't worry, theyre changing it to a titanic remake. Its bound to be good.

but seriously, the guy hasnt made a movie in forever and you're done with him? Id understand if he put shitty movies out every year but everything hes made has been ACE (argably for titanic).

You'd have to animate and render twice as many frames during effects shots, which would incur a large cost increase. Probably couldn't get the studio to approve of making the movie even more expensive than it already is.

We've heard a bit about Jon Favreau's and Danny Boyle's enthusiasm for Avatar, and of course many other top directors have visited the set. So it doesn't surprise me that J.J. Abrams would don an Avatar shirt at the WonderCon panel for Star Trek. After all, his Uhura is Cameron's Ney'tiri.

So is there atleast an image of this film? A still? Anything?

You know, when things are kept hidden for 10 years or so, they lose their hype and people expect it to fail ( and it usually does).

I bet this thing gets delayed to 2010.

Seeing how the current release date is December 18th, I'd say that's entirely possible,
however that release date is also ripe for a huge budget movie like that to earn the most profit, so if I was a bettin' man, I'ds say that it won't be.

You could go either Cameron's last science fiction movie before AVATAR:
terminator2.jpg

or his last sci-fi movie with Sigourney Weaver and James Horner composing (also on board AVATAR):
Aliens-with-newt.jpg

Narratively, those would be your best bets.
But really there's nothing to recommend since AVATAR is a film that is attempting to promote a new medium of filmmaking - there is no film that has attempted to do what this film is doing. Read up on the film. I suggest trawling through Variety for a great interview with Cameron on the process of filming it with all the new tech he's developed.

Scullibundo, I ask this with no implied insult or slight: are you going to be okay if this movie disappoints? :lol

Your enthusiasm is infectious and I respect Cameron, but I worry that it won't live up to all this hype...

braimuge said:
Does this film use ultra-realistic graphics? or is it a new form of 3D tv? Or combined? :o

The feature is entirely in 3D - using a new form of filming it. Hybrid between live action and CG - but you shouldn't be able to tell the difference in the end.

am i going to need 3D goggles to view this at home?

serious: what were Danny Boyle's remarks? a quick flick through google isn't helping...

It's fair enough to be dismissive of the insane amount of hype on it. I've been following the project since 2005 and every piece of the puzzle that has fallen into place in that time just seems to get me more excited. Back in 07 I wrote an essay on Cameron and the development of the film. When you have major players comparing what Cameron is doing with the integration of colour films or sound in movies, it makes you pay attention. Dont' forget Cameron has been sitting on this film for 12 years. He never made it earlier because the tech wasn't up to scratch. He's since he's developed the technology over the years with Vincent Pace over a number of documentary's which sort of acted as the testing method for the camera's he's developing.

Wait, so are you saying this film will be Live/Action CG like Beowulf, but with ridiculously awesome graphics? So much so, that it will seem like the movie is coming out of my screen in 3D???!!

Not like Beowulf because Beowulf was entirely in CG. This is both. He's shot in real locations and has had MONTHS of shooting with his actors. Also WETA will have been in post-production on the CG for almost 2 years by the time the film is released. If you want to know the difference between what Cameron is doing and what Zemeckis (Beowulf) is doing, then enter Cameron and 'The Volume' into google.

I'm starting to think it will disappoint.

I love Cameron,Aliens and T2 are easily one of the greatest films ever,I love Titanic screw the haters, and IMO he never made a bad film.

But this hype is just too much,I want it to live it up to it,but I don't see that happening.

Scullibundo for your own mental health you should expect the worst.

You know I wish I could. But I just can't doubt Cameron, I don't have it in me. Looking at it logically there is no way this film can match my hype - it would have to be one of the greatest films ever created. Because that is what I am expecting. One of the most revolutionary films of all time - the one that will be remembered as the game-changer. A 2001 for our generation.

From what I can tell, it looks to be a mix of these 3. At one point I thought they also had to hack into a Matrix or universal internet. Oh well.

But how are they going to do this? Won't the 3D-ness be lost if this comes out on Blu-ray/DvD? Cameron also mentioned that he wanted SCE and Microsoft Xbox to switch console gaming to utilize the 3D platform. I really hope they incorporate this next generation.

You won't be able to get an experience as good as the new 3D theatre experience for a long while at home. That's a big part of the motivation for 3D - to get people's asses back into cinemas. If you want that experience you're going to have to leave your house.

They lost me there. It was nice while it lasted. I will never go to cinema, watching a Blu-ray/dvd with a few friends is the best thing ever. In cinemas there's too many stupid things, going on :P

Edit: No, wait, it might not be that bad actually.

Well I'm starting to hope it sucks so I can watch your meltdown :lol :lol

But seriously I'm starting to think the 3D will make the movie more than the film itself, will its DVD and Bluray sales plummet,I hope its amazing even without the 3D,than will have both a great film and a great experience.

Looking forward to it either way.

Everytime this thread gets bumped, I die a little. Silly me, I keep thinking that MAYBE the bump will mean said teaser finally exists. Instead, we get TSHIRTON.

Oh, Sculli.

I can't wait for this movie to bomb. Assuming it will be good because Cameron did some good sci-fi movies back in the day doesn't cut it.
